350 bearing slap

This olds 350 was already rebuilt quite a while ago. The engine did not have a good oil pump installed and never had really good oil pressure. I have removed the crank while leaving the pistons in. The crank is being checked to see if it can be ground. The #1 and #8 journals are pretty bad but I hope they can be cleaned up. I am wondering if there are any tips to putting this back together. I am suspending the crank with the cherry picker and need to use something to cover the rod studs. I would like to use hose but the hoses I have found have too thick of sidewalls to work. Right now I am thinking of using elec. tape just to prevent crank damage. Any thoughts? The hole that oils the timing chain appears to ge plugged. I noticed that the chain wasn't oily when I took the pan off. It had alot of wear so that will also be replaced. Any thoughts about this engine? I just need it for a daily driver and the car itself is in very nice shape. Are there any trouble spots that are associated with this engine that I should check while on the stand? Thank you.
