Reset your Trip-o-meter and fill up your gas tank to full at the same time. Drive at least until it's below half a tank, record your mileage and the gallons it takes to fill up your gas tank at the same time. Also make a note of where you drove, highway or around the town. Divide the miles you drove by the gallons it took to fill the tank back up to full and magic, you got your mpg. Now if you mostly drove around town this would be City mpg and if you drove on a long trip, then it would be Highway mpg. That’s how I do it.
Hope this helps.
Right now I’m getting around 22.4 mpg on the highway, and about 17.5 around town.

I have heard that the trip odometer is inaccurate. Don't know why that should be, but it is common knowledge about some cars. Best way is to use highway markers for interstate driving and the odometer for in-town driving. If nothing else, check your trip odometer for accuracy by comparing it over a long distance with highway markers.
YMMV (sorry for the pun)

so the markers on the highway are accurate!? i always thought they were not because i drive alot to los angeles (115 miles) and i always notice that that my odometer doesnt match up to the signs that say how far my destination is another thing my job is 3.3 miles in my camry and 2.7 miles in my taco

So I've been told...
Hard to be sure, but I would trust fixed markers over an odometer that will read different distances with different tires, different final drive ratio, etc.
I think the difference in distances registered by your Camry and Tacoma sort of validates the assumption that odometers are unreliable.
I just hope they didn't establish mileage markers with an odometer.. :)
