How strong is soldering?

I have solder, soldering iron, and a butane flame in my garage my dad bought to use for electronics and completing electrical circuits, but I went to the flea market recently and there was a guy using some solder he was selling and a butane flame to weld joints in metal. I always wanted to build a go cart but I dont have a welder and dont know how to use one, but could I just use solder and a torch to weld the frame together? I mean I plan on making it extremely simple, so I dont think it has to be extremely strong. Could I just heat the joint of the 2 pieces of metal, apply the solder, and that would hold?

Wouldnt hold a bit. I'd suggest finding someone to weld the stuff up for you.

Hey it was worth a try. The guy at the flea market said he was selling some stronger form of solder though, he had some joints made with it and I tried pulling them apart and there was no give. I knew it wouldnt be strong, but at least strong enough to make a simple go kart.

nothing is going to be incredibly strong unless you have penentration into the metal

As long as you remember to wrap the joint with duct tape after you solder it will actually be stronger than steel. In fact you really dont even need to solder the joint, just overlap the metal tubing and wrap duct tape as tightly as you can.
