I have the exact same problem. I read somewhere on here that it might be a transfer case problem, or just a bad connection in the system somewhere.

there are two possible problems for your 4whee, drive not to engage. the buttoins you are pressing on your dash are the first of two switches that could go bad. if it doesn't light up it may be the dash switch that has burned out. if it lights up but doesn't engage the 4 wheel drive there is another switch on the transmission that could have gone bad. either one would stop your 4x4 from working. the dash switch is 100$ and the switch on the transmission is 250$ or slightly more.

I am having the same problem with my 93 explorer. It worked for a couple of days after I bought it, then stopped working. When I push the button, the electronic control module (in the rear of the vehicle, left side, with the rear washer fluid) clicks on then clicks off after a second. Here's what is supposed to happen when the vehicle attempts to go into 4x4 mode:
When the switch in the console is depressed, the ECM will nalyze info from the transfer case shift position sensor to verify current position. It also receives data from the speed sensor and clutch interlock switch, or neutral safety switch.
If all design conditions are met, the ECM will signal the electric shift motor to shift gear positions. After the shift ta placehe module will read the input from the shift position sensor to determine if the transfer case is in the right position. The ECM will also illuminateshbuttons on the dash/overhead indicating completion.
Try listening for the ECM to engage when you push the 4x4 button. If you don't hear a click on/off, then the ECM itself might be bad. If it does click on/off, then it might be further down the line. There is a connection at the rear of the differential xfer case, you might want to check that as well. I haven't gotten resolution on my own problem yet -- still need to check the connections to see if power's getting there.

Hi Guys,
I had the same problem about a year ago with my 94 explorer. Here Is a link to the site I used to fix the problem. The replacement bushing is just a hard plastic hose. I bought a foot for something like $.09 and it took about 2-3 hours to fix. Take the gear with the stop on it into your local hardware store to find the right size. It still works and it engages faster than it used to. Explorer Maintainance (http://www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/web/pages/tcase.html)

Had the engaging motor on the transfer case go bad on my 93 this past year. I traced to the motor for a couple of reasons. Before it went all the way it would somtimes go, sometime not and be slow to disengage suggesting it was weak. I took the motor off the transfer case and hit the switch and it was very jerky to turn. It only turns like a 1/2 to 2/3 of a revolution. A friend had the same problem with his 93 and replacing it fixed it.
Bad news it like $300. removal is a snap. changing the wires to the new plug, big pain!!! There supposed to pull out but I had to cut out with my dremel.

Agree to what was posted earlier. Mine had the same problem. Took the transfer case motor apart and replaced a small white ring with a piece of hose. The ring had become worn where something in the motor would hit or press against it. Problem solved.

tap on the motor attached to the transfer case what happens is it freezes with limited use tap on it with hammer while some one pushes the button (not with engine running) and every few weeks find a dirt road and engage this will solve problems and save money
