replacing f-150 ignition switch

My 1988 f-150 is switching itself off-engine and electrical completely cuts off- when I hit bumps, etc. I have found that this can be avoided by holding the ignition key so that it does not rotate counterclockwise when it is jarred. This leads me to believe that I need a new ignition switch which, maybe, I can install. Can anyone tell me how to remove the old switch from the steering column along with any other tips on removing/replacing the old switch with a new one. Tanks in advance.

Well, the first thing is that the Ignition Switch is NOTZ the same part or component as the Ignition Lock. Now, which do you need to replace? If the lock is floppy, has excessive play with the key removed, then this is relatively simple. If, on the other hand, it is the switch that is the problem, and you want to replace it, it's not so easy because it's located under the dash bolted to the top of the steering column.

Sorry about the terminology incompetency. I'll have to check this later since the truck is about 30 miles from my current location--probably next day or two depending upon the storm Bonnie coming inland. I do not know about excessive play with the key removed, however there is play with no resistnce between the on position and the crank position when the key is on and the truck running. If the key is barely touched while the truck is running, the enging shuts off. However, the truck will recrank very easily. Hope this clarifies things somewhat. Thanks.
