The following is a RANT by me concerning the Drift forum and attitude shown twards things. some of the point of views my be wrong so If you want to flame or bash me for this then PM or something.
Ahh, Isn't this such a nice wonderful forum where anyone can talk about Drifting but when someone trys it out in an empty parking lot some late hour of the night when no one is out or alive, is flamed for having a goal and a dream. Someone says something about useing a diffrent type of car for driffting that no one has ever used get's good luck in a point blank end of discussion way for trying to be diffrent, and to think ppl complian about eveyone useing 240s. Drifting is about having fun RIGHT? I think they even say that in the Drift Bible. So, why are we all so serious about it. By telling someone to only do it at a sanctiond even you basicly giving the little guy the shaft like all other motorsports seam to do. YES, I do think ppl should be as safe a possible when Drifting but don't act like a cop twards a sk8er thats just gay.
The attitude I have noticed twards drifting is that some ppl ( I can't point out who, anyhow that would be just rude. ) seam to be fending off Drifting as thier own SPEICAL sport that the think ppl will take it away from them so only a select few ( any one who can already drift or agrees with them on the same point of views ) is allowed to like and express ideas about Drifting.
Im done with this RANT so say what you want in reply.

Tough cookies. I'm too lazy for PMs, and others might want to read what I have to say anyway. :p Here goes...

A person isn't necessarily flamed for having a goal and a dream. They're flamed for trying to do something illegal. It doesn't matter if someone is in the parking lot or not. The cops don't care.

There's a reason all the other motorsports fans tell people to practice at sactioned events: Because doing so otherwise is illegal. It's no different with drifting. The most we can do is discourage you from going out to the parking lot. The least the cops will do is probably give you a ticket. Listen to the advice here about where to practice, and you won't get one.

There was a meet in my area a few months ago. Folks were just standing in the parking lot with their cars, talking. Then there was a guy in a burgundy 240 hatch that started doing doughnuts, sticking his hand out the window like he's in an Option video. Next thing you know, he smacks into someone's car. The people in this forum are trying to keep from encouraging that sort of idiocy, and I for one, think the hobby would be better without it.

wow that one dood in the 240 was a real idiot, I would be soo piss if he hit my car.
I have no arguments with what you said, it's all true. I just feel we shouldn't be so quick to scare off the new ppl but we should gide them ,with aid of a warmer welcome and I know we get punk kids thinking thier gonna be the next king all the time so, all the newbies and what they say probly gets old fast to every one here in this forum. thats it for now. sorry about all the spelling errors.

Correct me if Im wrong but didnt most of the proffesion Japanese drifters (i.e D1 drivers) learn to drift in empty parking lots and mountains?
Im not saying that since they did it its ok or anything but you got to start some were. If they didnt practice drifting because it was illegal then it probably wouldnt be anywhere near as big as it is today.

you are correct, but we have the SCCA to help us out along with grassroots events. we say don't do it, it's in your best intrest not to do it on the streets. cops can be a real pain in the ass about some things. Would you like your insurance to skyrocket up to the sky. all I have to say is we must be wise about how we pratice and keep it as safe as we can $25 to $50 for a drift day event is a lot better than a ticket of something in the #s of 50 to 500 and maby a police impound. 500 a new set of tires for your drift ride. $50 all tires balenced and maby an oil change if you get the cheep oil haha. $34 for 4qt's of the best stuff.

Well if they have sanctioned(spelling?) drift events go to them, but not every city/place does. I live in Canada so no SCCA, I just moved to Calgary so Im not sure if there are any sanctioned drifting events here but I dont think so. So my only real option would be a empty parking lot.

ahh don't worry about spelling all that much if no one noticed mine is really bad. Check and see if you have any rally driving places cuz thats even cooler, but if you must use the EMPTY PARKING lots, just be smart about where and when you chose to pratice Just be cautious and watch for PEOPLE even more so than cops man. ONLY ppl who have no other option should even decide to use EMPTY PARKING LOTS as means for praticing. we don't need any cops to badmouth the art and sport of drifting like they do to streat raceing in those streat fury DVD's cuz some punks were foolish about thier actions.

There are areas in JP where the cops are pretty cool with that sort of thing. There aren't many spots like that in the US, and probably even less in Canada.
If you have to go to a parking lot Schuey, probably the best you can do is ask the property owner if you can go there late at night. I sw someone on another forum who was able to work out something like that. They would just be on the lot between 12-2am or something like that.

/\haha your a newb, *just kidding*
well out were i live (park city, utah) there really is nowhere to drift legally, we have rocky mountain raceway, which is about 45 minutes away, and so far they haven't had any drift events, i dont know how else i would be able to drift except illegally, unless i drove down to vegas,(heard they have drift days at their track) buts thats the closest track, and its a 6 hour trip there

Take a look at my sig as to how I got my "feet wet".
I won't lie, drifting is a ton of fun. But always try to keep racing and drifting on the tracks or out of the cities. And if you decide to ignore that advice, don't be mad at the cop for catching you breaking the law.

ok heres the rule: no one living near by, no poles, trees, or curbs, no spectators vehicles parked on the side, and makes sure no traffic, practice in a safe environment, even a pro wouldnt do it on the street, thats what construction areas are for on sunday nights =)
