go to www.download.com, download 2 programs... one is called ad-aware and the other is "spybot search and destroy". Install both, update and run them one at a time. They will remove spyware which is probably killing your system...
Also go to http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger
Download and run the stinger application, it's from mcafee virusscan and is designed to seek and destroy specific virii...
good luck.

Here's a way you can take a quick look and see if something is running in the background that should'nt be (make sure you've closed all programs first):
Hit ctrl+alt+del all at the same time. That will bring up some called the Windows Task Manager. If you're using XP, hit the Performance Tab to look at the CPU Usage history. If you're not doing anything, your CPU usage should be running at about 1-2%. Also, you can see how much RAM you have under Physical Memory(not to be confused with your hard drive space, altho little hard drive space will also slow your comp down). Make a note of how mych Physical Memory you have and how much of that is available, and let us know the results.
Also, you might check your Start Up folder by going to Start->All Programs->Startup. You might have gotten alot of stuff in there that doesn't need to be installed. You can right click and delete any files you don't want.
Lastly go to your Control Panel (Start-> Control Panel) and choose the Add/Remove option to see what's installed. You might find some old programs you don't use any more that didn't uninstall correctly.
Good Luck!

What OS (Operating System [version of windows]) Are you running? Right click "My Computer" and go down to "Properties"....Now for Win 98/Me, go to the "Performance" tab and it will show you how many MB of RAM you have....for Win 2000/XP, usually you would have "System Resources" in the "General" tab
Find that out and get back to me, you can pm me if youd like

The other good program from download.com is called FreeRAM XP Pro. Once installed, right click on it and Try to free 100% of RAM once every half hour. Will make a big difference. Also make sure you have at least 10% of your hard drive free for swap files, preferably more.

Is there anything in your Start Up file? Also, using the Task Manager, you can see what programs are running actively and hidden. Something is running that probly shouldn't be...
*edit* Check your systray (bottom right corner next to your clock) and see if there's any programs running there you don't want active. Click the arrow to see everything there, if there is one.

You can delete programs from your startup file without deleting them from your computer. Bad programs will come back, but there's a way to get rid of that using regedit if need be. Make sure to reboot after you clear your startup folder. You can usually get rid of everything in there and be fine (unless there's something in there you want running)

Useiing regedit will just keep bad progrmas from reintroducing themselves into your startup folder. Unless you're experianced with it, I wouldn't use it/
Use the add/remove progrmas function in the control panel to remove any progrmas you don't want.
In your task manager look under the Applications tab to see what programs are running actively and Processes tab to see what's running in the back ground.

There's ALOT of programs you need to have running in the background for your computer to work properly. Before doing anything that drastic, can you tell us if you have ran any anti-virus software, or like mentioned above if you used any spyware nukers?
Knowing how much RAM you have would also be useful. (You can check that by running msinfo32. Start->Run and enter msinfo32 in the little box that pops up. RAM is listed under Physical Memory.) Let us know your total memory and your available memory.

Anything found in the Start->All Programs->Startup can be deleted (by right clicking it and selecting Delete) without worries. But this doesn't usually show malicious programs.
Without you having access to someone knowledgeable who can look at your computer in person, a reformat is not a bad idea. Just make sure you back up everything you want (saving your My Documents folder is usually a good idea). I had the exact same problem as you (with the exact same reaction :) ) so I know how you feel and in the end I had to reformat my hard drive to get it back up to speed. I'm just lucky my hubby is a talented IT engineer and has helped me learn how to keep my computer running smooth since then.
My best guess is that you've got something bad on your comp thats messing everything up. But don't throw away your computer, since that would be like junking your car because some asshat put sugar into the gastank.

It's so tempting to take a sledgehammer to the things, tho isn't it? http://www.fearlesspride.com/datas/users/4-3_8_4[1].gif
Do you know which programs is it you're having troubles getting rid of? And if you do, do you know if they were something you installed or something that was snuck in during an installation? If you have a name, you can check McAfee's virus library at:McAfee's Virus Library (http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?cid=9043)
Sometimes something isn't really a virus but will still be listed there and it usually gives you instructions on removal. Be careful tho, cus you can really bork up your comp if you don't know what you're doing. Before you do something drastic, it would still be a good idea to back up your personal info, just in case something goes wrong (trust me on this:) ).
