2001 Taurus Gas Mileage

Can anybody tell what they get in the way of gas mileage for their Ford Taurus. I'm getting about 21.4 miles/gallon on a 2001 Taurus. This has been calculated using information from 7 tanks of fuel over a period of time. It has been about 85% highway miles and anywhere from 60-70 mph. There has been no gunning the engine or rabbit starts or anything like that, just normal everyday driving. I think I should be getting closer to 25-27 miles/gallon, but wanted to know what other people are getting.

YOur 2001 should be getting metter gas mileage than that. Your right, it should be closer to 30. Just a few simple things to consider, have you:
*Check the air pressure in all tires
*Check your air filter
*Change your fuel filter (this is all too often neglected)
*Have you checked your plugs and wires to see what kind of condition they are in?
These are just some minor things to check, it could be something more complex but these minor things are often overlooked and greatly affect your gas mileage.
My 1997 Taurus gets 32MPG and thats mostly short trips (like 10 miles -20 miles one way) with the Vulcan engine.
Do you know what engine you have and how many miles are on your Taurus?
Let me know how you make out, maybe I can be of further help if these things do help.

Driving technique has a lot to do with it. I have an '02 w/Vulcan & get 23-25 in mostly city driving, the A/C cuts it to 21. Ford service where I go recommends 40# in the front tires.

The car has about 62,000 miles on it, and it has the 6 cyl. flex fuel engine (2 on the VIN). The air filter was replaced about 3 weeks ago. The tires are only 3 weeks old, but i'll check the pressure just in case. I'll be replacing the fuel filter this weekend and probably check the plugs at that time.

It is 17 miles to work one way. I leave the house and go through about 4 or 5 stop lights within the first 3-4 miles. After that its all highway with hardly any traffic. I leave the A/C on the lowest settings for most of any trips, except in the afternoons it will be on a higher setting for a little while just to cool things down. I don't know about the vulcan engine, this is a regular 6 cyl., a 2 on the VIN.

The Vulcan is the 3.0 pushrod engine. The Duratech models have a "24 V" emblem on the side of the front fenders and the engine looks much larger. Your gas mileage isn't much different from mine so I don't think that you are greatly out of line.

we have a 1997 Taurus with the 24 V engine, and on the hgighway w have gotten 45 mpg's (this is also using the UK and all that Jazz) but city is usually around 26 or 27
