Carbon Canister problem

I've been trying to find out why there is still a vacuum leak somewhere on the engine, and why there's a heavy fuel fume smell in the engine compartment.

Earlier I has posted something on replacing a valve cover gasket, and found a few days later, that it may be leak in a 1/4" rubber hose that goes to the Carbon/Vapor canister located below the battery (right corner).

Well, following the connected rubber hose down, is connects to a metal 3/8" duct that looks like a fuel/brake line.

The rubber hose is deteriorated and broke half-away.
My source of the fuel smell.

You see, according to my factory manual, the duct goes to the Vapor Purge pump you hear sometimes wirring in the gas tank. The pump pushes the gas fumes from the gas tank to get absorbed by the carbon canister.

From there vacuum from the engine is used to go I believe back to the manifold for combustion. (I will double check this).

I'll post my findings later.

I fixed the old split broken hose from the carbon/vapor canister, and voila' ... more performance.

It was an itty bitty tear in the hose, and it caused that much trouble.

For info. A majority of the hoses under the hood of the '87 mgm is 1/4" rubber hose. Broken emissions driven plastic vacuum hoses can be repaired by replacing the section, or used as a sheath by 3/8" rubber hose.
