I have a 96 CS Sedan, i'd like to know if it has a speed limiter ? This car is situated in Israel, also what is the top speed of an Automatic 2.2 Litre ?

can it get to 120 ?

I believe it has a limiter set at 108.

Ditto, I hear 108 or 109 (what's the difference?) is all it'll do. I wounldn't want to be in my Cavi that fast. Maybe with suspension mods, a roll cage, and a helmet for my big head.

the cavy felt a bit jumpy .. even when i was on 90.... it'll be too dangerous going at 100 - 110 ?

you dont take the limiter off untill you have brake and suspension upgrades.

I hit 108 in my 1997 2-door cavalier about 2 weeks ago and there were no problems. Then last week I had 4 friends in the car and hit 103. It wouldn't go any faster because of all the extra weight. (about 700 pounds). No shaking, no rattling, and no odd noises on either of them. Well on my most recent one I heard a lot of "holy shit" being said.

By the way its a stick and I don't have any upgrades, and my tires are stock.

i have a sedan and i can't get it above 103. I'm not sure if it won't get there because its a 4 dr or whatnot. But i don't really care for it to go faster than that. I would rather turn heads than be fast. I don't need any speeding tickets. Come one guys don't we pay enough as it is?

Also, now that it is lowered...When i hit a bump, it hurts like a mother fu*ker at high speeds. I had it at 98 today and god damn!!! What a shitty ride when you hit bumps, but i am willin to sacrafice ride for looks. ;-)

so 103 is to fast for you but 98 isnt? Hey why dont you contradict yourself some more.

i'm saying it goes 103 but i only put it 98 that day there ya fuckin tard. I wanted to see what kind of ride it had at speeds near that! I think you need to read things fully first!

-Jayson-
06-23-2004, 11:45 AM
i did read it dumbass, in one statement you say theirs no reason to go 103 MPH, you dont need any speeding tickets and you pay enough money. Then in the next your talking about doing 98 MPH. Does that 5 MPH make a big difference?

Me and my girlfriend were on the way to see her dad in prison and we hit the speed limiter in the 98 z-24 about a mile from the prison. It was perfectly stable, and I know because I've driven many cars at a much faster rate. If you want to go over 100 mph, it's all good if there's no traffic to slow down for, where you can just let go of the gas and the engine speed will slow you down.

i have a 1996 z 24 with many mods and i have had it going about 125 and its a 5 speed so i dont believe there is a limit on the car jsut without the mods it wont go nemore

-Jayson-
06-25-2004, 09:25 PM
^^ BS!! GM made a limit of 108-115MPH depending on the year. ANd unless you changed the guage cluster on it you would have no idea you were doing 125 MPH cause the guages only go to 110MPH. And since you dont think their is a limit you obviously dont know what the VSS Mod is. Or maybe your one of those morons who bought a Venom400 or Jet Control Module. . .

I don;t know about the second Generations but if you have a 95+ j-body no matter what trim, motor or whatever its governed at 108 like previously said. Only way to get it past 108 without doing the VVS mod is to be going down hill on somthing like a state highwya and it hits the govoner. The motor cuts but if you have enough momentum you can hit 109 or 110.........lol

The 2nd generation cavs should be goverened also just don;t know the exact speed. maybe 110. But not anymore. reason is as stated the car is not ment to handle that speed and unless you have suspension, brake, and wheel upgrades.

And I'm not refering to buying better all season tires, premuin OEM brak liners, and cutting your springs either.

me and my friend where running the 1/4 mile..and then decided to see how fast it would go...and my car shuts off just past 110 mph..which is hella fast for a cav...but soon it will change and will go faster than that.

Speed dont kill, its the sudden impact that does.

So far, I've only had it to 90. Wasn't really trying, just legged it out a little, and it hit 90 quite easily. I'm sure the car will go faster than that, but I can see where a few mods would make it a bit more stable at speed.

I can also see where GM thought it was a good idea to put a limiter in. I've hit the limiter in my van a couple of times, and that was definitely faster than the van should be driven on a regular basis.

i cant even count how many times ive hit the governor in my car, 108 in 4th gear is somewhere around 5100 rpms so i dont even get to shift into 5th before it kicks in

Same with me. I've hit it like 3-4 times in a row. And I normally hit it once a week.

My good ol' second gen wil go from 75 to 100 pretty easily, that last 8-10 mph isn't as easy, but it will do it. I went to Knoxville last week (220mi RT) and did about 85 most of the way, I get a little uneasy going faster than that, for long periods of time. I hadn't hit the gov in a while, and there was no one around so I figured what the hell. I punched it and it took about 15 seconds to hit 110 and I slowed it back down to 85. Man 110 is really haulin' compared to the usual 80, and much more dangerous if something catastrophic happens, hence the uneasy feeling past 85. There's nothing you can do to save it at those speeds, even Mario Andretti himself couldn't keep it on the road if a tire blew. RIP Andy Filson.

You all do know what happens when you hit the rev limiter or speed governor, don't you? It cuts off the fuel injectors until it slows back down. You all know what happens when you run an engine lean, very bad things.

I know hitting it once or twice for a second or two isn't going to cause any problems, immediatly, but if you make it a habbit you will have problems down the road. So don't go crazy bouncing off the rev limiter and governor every day. Keep it safe guys!

if you want to disable the speed limiter its simple, first you need to reach a speed above 105MPH, then quickly put it into reverse. And tada, no more speed limiter.

:eek7: I'm running in a 94 RS 3.1. My mods are minor. Intake, exhuast, and plugs, wires, and a weight reduction kit. At full speed the car will limit itself at just under 110 MPH. Mods don't matter. Besides most car aren't ment for top speed racing. Mopar engines are almost it, at least in older cars, anywayz most mods are ment to give you faster acceleration, not top end. If your running up to 125 in a cavalier, I want to know where I can buy a bottle of liquid SCHWARTS. (you won't understand that unless youv'e seen space ball the movie)

Its scary to think all these morons are driving this fast and think they are under control..

Anywyas to overide the governer you need to hook up a series of things dealing with the transmission. Now Im not gonna come out and say how to do since people dont really need to know how to do it. Its just that Ive learned alot of things about Cavlaiers over the years.

LTZ2FLIP4
10-21-2005, 07:04 PM
BTW, the governer is set at either 108 or 115 depending on what year the car is.

I'll agree that driving one of these cars over 100 MPH is not a good idea, at least not without some decent mods. I didn't like mine much at a tick over 90 for more than the short time it took to get it there and back down.

What does surprise me is how easy it is to get to that speed in a car I've always considered an economy car. This 2.2 Ecotec was happy as a playful puppy revving right up to speed. Had plenty of throttle left, too.

Well just last night i was bored and was playing with my cavy (1989 Z24 2.8 3 spd auto) with no professional mods the muffler fell off and was nevr replaced, the stock air cowles were cut out in the back as i have seen done before which kinda makes a redneck ram air system umm i cleaned the motor replaced the old throttle body with one off a 3.1 (which wont really make a difference) it was just one i striped down, cleaned it in the parts tank, ,and sandblasted the fucker all to hell and put it all togeather (did an oil change too) but anyway i stomped it down at like 3 am and hit 110 EASY COMPLETELY STOCK hell my tires suck too so if ANYBODY EVER wants to diss a cavalier they can get down on 2 knees and suck my dick cuz caviliers are fuckin TIGHT oh and btw everybody that decks out these supras, civics, and shit and say hey they are the best cars to mod and race dude they aint shit cuz if u completely mod out a cavy u will be pullin the fast and the furious X10 and makle thm little forign thingys look like a mouse against a mountain lion

LilRogue, you've just made a whole lot of unwarranted assertions and made them form a relatively new account. You might want to be careful about saying things like that.

Yes, a 2.8 has plenty more torque than the rest of the J motors, save for a 3.1 in the 93-94 years. This isn irrelevant, a Supra would rape the shit out of your car hands down, especially a newer one, and a modern civic would beat you out on the top-end. You would, however, launch far better than the civic, but that's relatively irrelevant.

Anyways, just as my $0.02, I'm pretty sure the limiter was 128 on 2nd gen 2nd phase j's.

Cavycrasher

so is there a limit on the 95 cavies?
I got mine to well past the 110 mark...
Well it said 110, then it kept going to were 120 would be....

Probably because the engine shut down it temporarily messed up power steering, and it took a restart to let it all work itself out...

But yeah, 108 is the max speed you can go in a 3rd gen. Dont ask how to go beyond it because if you need to ask then you are obviously too stupid to be going that fast anyhow!

Maybe Ill post this in the Supra and Civic sections for you...

Anyway this thread is, again, useless. Lets all write up how weve all hit the limiters in our cars...YAY! Yes, Ive done it, once, so Im not gonna tryand act like I am better than anyone. But those who think you are under control at those speeds, think again. One pothole or irregularity in the asphalt, then what?

Please stop posting limiter threads, they are getting real old, and we have quite an abundance already.

Lock.
