CAN ANYONE TELL ME THE FIRING ORDER (DIAGRAM) FOR THE 97 6CYL FORD EXPLORER SPORT ENGINE? OR WHERE I COULD FIND THE INFO? i JUST NEED TO KNOW WHICH IS THE #4 PLUG... BUT A DIAGRAM OF WHAT GOES WHERE WOULD BE GREAT... EX HUBBY DECIDED TO REPLACE MY SPARK PLUGS AND PUT NEW WIRES ON, DIDN'T MARK A DAMN THING WHEN TAKING IT ALL OUT... AND DOESN'T HAVE A CLUE WHERE ANYTHING WENT... I JUST NEEDED THE #4 SPARK PLUG REPLACED... (THE ONE THAT FOULS OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN... PROBABLY INDICATION THAT SOMETHING IS TERRIBLY WRONG, BUT FOR THE QUICK FIX REPLACING IT WORKS FOR AWHILE... I HAD IT ALL MARKED ON THE WIRES, BUT AFTER HE DECIDED I NEEDED ALL NEW ONES MY MARKS AREN'T THERE ANYMORE AND i DON'T REMEMBER WHICH ONE IT IS ANYMORE! I CAN'T FIND THIS ON THE WEB ANYWHERE... I GUESS I COULD CALL FORD. HECK WORTH A TRY HERE THOUGH... HATE THE GUYS AT OUR LOCAL DEALERSHIP... THEY SAY... WHY DO YOU TRY TO FIX THINGS YOURSELF SWEETIE? WHY DON'T YOU JUST GO GET YOUR NAILS DONE AND STAY IN YOUR PROPER ELEMENT... LITERALLY.... ACTUALLY SAID THAT TO ME.... IN PERSON... TO MY FACE.... WHATEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6.
The cylinder numbers are (front to rear):
Drivers side: 4-5-6
Passenger side: 1-2-3
Don't break any of those nails puttin them on!
Good luck.

Hello! New issue... kind of... Ex has insisted that the wires go on like this: I'll try to type this like a diagram: This would be if you are facing the engine with the drivers side on your right, passenger on left, "front" meaning closest to headlights, "rear" meaning closest to taillights: middle numbers are how he believes firing order is arranged:
REAR OF VEHICLE
passenger side ----wires-----drivers side
cylinder #3-------3-4------ cylinder #6
cylinder #2-------2-6------ cylinder #5
cylinder #1-------1-5------ cylinder #4
FRONT OF VEHICLE
In other words, he has the #4 cylinder spark plug wire connected to the right hand -rear side of the box??? (what's the darn name of the thing the wires originate on??) you said the order was 1-4, 2-5, 3-6... he has it hooked up as 1-5, 2-6, 3-4... when I replaced the #4 plug (which looked pretty hideous) was when I noticed how he had routed the wires... (he had left the #4 wire off at the spark plug itself so I could replace the plug, and it hadn't been started yet with the old plug in, and "new wiring order") Well, I did start it... it does run... but worse than before getting the new plug, and he says that isn't because he wired it wrong, it is that I have cracks in the ?? where the spark plug goes that are spreading and it is just going to quit running for good if I drive it at all.... And that if put the wires in the order you said they should go I'll probably "foul the whole thing" (whatever that means...) Okay... I obviously don't know enough about vehicles to even be in this discussion, but I never had to worry about the location the wires were in before because I just pulled off the wire and replaced the plug and I was good to go.... I don't think it was arranged in this order with my old wires but.... I didn't exactly study it either... If it were me replacing the wires I would have marked what goes where... is all of this irrelevant because my vehicle is simply dying???? (this is also what he says...) HELP!! I'd love to just go and switch the wires around, but now i am scared to do it. -- maybe the ford dealership guy is right, and that I should stick to getting my nails done, and have them deal with it.... but taking it to them ends up costing soooo much... because they find everything else in the world wrong that NEEDS IMMEDIATE ATTENTION!

I'm getting confused, so let's back up.
The Haynes manual shows the cylinder numbers as I showed.
Now....the plug wires originate from what's called a Coil Pack (CP). There are two different 6 cylinder engines...the one with the CP on the passenger side is the Pushrod engine. If the CP is on the drivers side its the SOHC engine.
Determine which you have.
I have the SOHC version....the CP lays left-right, the LF is #5, middle is #6, the RF is #4.
I verified by looking at mine.
I couldn't easily trace the other three wires, but the manual shows the rear row of wires on the CP
as ...left is 1, mid is 2, and right is 3.
Even if you hooked em up wrong, it would just cough and spit...no permanent damage.
If you have the pushrod engine...I have to interpret the drawing, so bear with me.
The cylinders are numbered the same.
It appears the CP lays front-back. If not, you could probably figure it out from what I say.
LF is 1, mid is 2, LR is 3.
RF is 5, mid is 6, and RR is 4.
I can hear it ROAR already!

Okay, try this diagram.
Here are the cylinders looking at the engine from the front of vehicle...And the ignition coil pack, for the SOHC v6.
