Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo (Z32) vs. Nissan Skyline GTR (R34)

Hi Guys,
Nissan made two very fast cars in the 90s which have both evolved into cult cars with very large followings; The Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo and The Nissan Skyline GTR. I want to know which car you, the Nissan lovers of the world, think is best and why.

Take the VG30DETT from the Z and drop it into the GT-R. Then you've got the perfect car!

What's wrong with the Z chassis? The lower hood on the Z would allow for better aerodynamics don't ya think?

The way that the Z's chassis sits prevents the car from having any launching grip whatsoever when running in the low 12-second range. But the Z's engine has more potential. So I'd drop it into the GT-R.

Okay. But we all know that there are ways to improve launchability with everything from suspension tricks to tire types. I have a video in my collection of a 300ZX literally jumping off of the line like a mad dog on a leash. The problem your describing is also common with the the Supra. But, what the Supra lacks in launching grip it makes up for in sheer momentum.

Having worked on both cars and tried to extract power from both, I would say the GT-R has it all over the Zed's. The VG30DETT has inherent weaknesses above 400hp at the crankshaft despite having quality internals, whilst the RB26DETT can withstand 400hp on stock internals and many Aussie examples are eclipsing 900hp, while pulling of 9sec quarters at 140+mph. Sure that takes big $$$ but getting a big Zed to pull an 11 takes about the same sort of $$$.
Hence this experience has led me to my new weekend warrior, an OS Giken R34 spec RB31DETT engine being fitted to a R34 GT-R NÜR so I may be biased but having a 611kw at the wheels for less the $50,000(about $US25,000) in Australia is value for my $$, the GT-R has it all.
Maybe a VG30 in a R33 GTS-T would be a better prospect, less torque required in a 2WD application and better cooling in the higher engine bay compared to the Zed.

How about a VQ30DET in a GT-R then? The VQ's handled 500hp at the crank so far, and those were normally aspirated versions with turbos added. The DET should be even better. The aluminum block VQ is also a few hundred pounds lighter than the VG or RB.
There is a stroker kit from tuner AEBS in the US that brings the larger VQ35s up to 4.3L, and it includes sleeves capable of holding 55psi. All for around $8,000 US. Their mechanics say that 1500hp won't be a problem with the sleeves.
If NISMO thinks the VQ is good enough for their JGTC R34s, it should be just fine for a street application.

Uhh... Are you guys serious? The RB series motors can turn well over 1000hp. In addition it is MUCH cheaper to get an RB26DETT to 500hp wheel hp, just turn up the boost, or at most replave the factory twins with a larger single turbo. From what I have read on twinturbo.net you have to do a motor build-up on the 300Z motor.
Does the 300z motor even compare?

The Z wasnt ment to be a drag car people, it was a road course car, you know TURNS!
The Z out performs almost any car in this catagory in their stock form. The Skyline dominated the track scene for years , but was a horse of a different color.

/\ That and the info on the VG is incorrect. What inherent weakness you are talking about? The stock crank is used for just about everything you'll ever see on the street to include Z1s 800rwhp PeaceMaker and the 744rwhp Z32 Wagz built himself with off the shelf parts. The main studs and the rest of the block are good into the 600rwhp range easy. The rods in the VG are some the strongest ever put into a Japanese car and while you'll want to get some forged pistons when you hit about 500 rwhp or so the VG block will push as much power as you. As in like 1500hp Pro-Street class 300ZXs. I don't know which dick ever thought that the VG "has no potential" or that "300ZXs aren't good cars" but they must have been breathing through a tube because there is no way they could breath otherwise with their head that far up their ass.
I dont' know what kind of 300ZXs you may have been working on but you might want to check out the guys at Z Tuner who put a 300ZX still running stock turbos into the 11s with bolt on parts. Big $$$ my ass. Buying a Skyline, thats big $$$.

And yet another informed opinion from the Initial D crowd. Not to try and insult anyone too much but this is the type of thing you hear from people who entire engine tuning experience is on a video game. I don't this guy or what his background is and I'm not talking about him personally, I'm just saying 99% of the people out there have no clue as to what various cars and engines are capable of. And when you combine naturally stupid with bad information you get:
"dUde skyLines r badazzz JDM tyte yo u shud huk it up wid NOS nd grond affcts man dat wud b fucin kilr o nd git a R-34 tey wer da best"

lets put it this way, skyline=nissans halo car. 300zx not nissans halo car.

skyline = nissan's japanese halo car
300zxTT = nissan's american halo car
both cars are great. keep in mind, the thread starter wanted to compare some the 300zx to the skyline of the same year. they are almost identical in alot of aspects. i think some people just deny the fact that the VG is a powerful motor. and the 300zx is a well rounded, well-built car.

#1 this thread is old
#2 these cars are too different to compare. its like comparing an audi TT with an RS6.
not only that but the z32 went out of production here before the skyline began production. compare the R32 with the Z32 and it would at least be closer.
