Does the fuel pump every time the key is first turned on?

I know when you first turn on the key the pump will pump for about two seconds, then if you turn the key of and turn it on again should it pump for those two seconds every time you do this????
Mine doesn't and it doesn't run. Could this be the problem??

definately, every time you turn the key on the fuel pump should prime the system, if you turn the key on and the pump dosnt make any sound, its not working. either you arent getting power out of the ignition, although then nothing would work, (radio, headlights, interieor lights etc.) or the fuel pump fuse is blown, or the connector at the fuel sender is corroded, or the fuel pump is bad. the fuel pump fuse is on the passenger side fender, under the hood, between the battery and the radiator overflow tank.

Well, with mine I can hear the pump every once in a while. If I turn the key on I hear it, then I turn the key off, and turn it on again I won't hear it. I can turn it off and on about 6 times before I hear it again.
Sometimes it is like 6 tries and sometimes in is 10 sometimes 2. Is there a bad realy of something maybe?

well i think there may be a time thing, like ten seconds maybe, that if you turn the key off, and then immediatly turn it back on, it might not pump again. ill have to go check tomorrow. have you checked for fuel pressure???

actually it's on a timer, the fuel pump relay is controlled by the ecm. turn the key on and it will prime, turn the key back off and wait about 10-15 seconds then turn the key back on again, and it will prime again.

yea, mine does the same, so I doubt that's your problem.

Okay thats what it does right there. Now, if I were to pull the line off the filter and turn the ignition on, how far should the fuel shoot. Mine goes about 16". The flow seems fine, but the fuel is only dripping slowly out of the injector. If I pour gas in the intake it will run as long as I keep pumping the heck out of it. When I stop it dies and won't start back up until re-primed. Any ideas??

sounds like stopped up injectors then if it's dripping like that.

1992 RS. with tbi

hmm sounds like a weak fuel pump. it's almost impossible to tell if the fuel pump is good but visually inspecting how much fuel shoots out an open line. tbi uses such low pressure than even 3-5 psi can mean the difference between full power and hardly running. is it only one injector that drips or is it both of them?

It is only the one injector that drips, the other one does nothing visible. I am also norrowing it down to the fuel pump being weak also, despite it being new.
Are both injectors supposed to spray at the same rate. Do they both work together to feed the entire engine or does one injector feed one side and the other the side?

yep both injector spray at the same rate and at the same time. the stock manifold is a single plain i beleive, so both injectors feed the whole engine. if you've got fuel coming out of the pump but not the injectors, it could be a bad regualator. could also be a problem with the VATS module. it enables the fuel injector outputs for a cold start, if it's not working the injectors will spray based on engine vacuum, which during cranking isn't very much. i'd get your pressure tested tho, and start from there

what about vapor lock, could that be a possibility?

could be, im having a vapor lock problem with my bug, one min it runs fine, i turn it off, go to start it back up and it wont start for nothing

a vapor lock isn't really a common problem with fuel injection, but it's very possible. he might have a plugged vent tube on the tank.

I'm having a very similar problem with my 93 V6. I took it for a 200 mile highway run on Saturday, she ran like a dream as usual. Sunday morning she wouldnt start, there is no sound coming from the fuel pump at all. While I was turning the engine the fuel gauge was maxed out, but there's only half a tank of gas in there.

After reading some stuff online about how dying pumps sometimes don't operate at all if your battery is low, I tried to jump start her today. At first try she started up, only to die again 3 seconds later. I couldn't start her again after that.

It might be related that I only got 260 miles out of my last tank of gas ( I usually run at about 380 miles per tank).

Does anyone have any ideas please, I'm really stressing about this one.
