Samuel Hubinette and his Team Mopar Viper have made drifting history as the first winners in SCCA Formula Drift competition. Big kudos to him, his team, and to Mopar for sponsoring him.

I don't know if I care if it "looks good" as a drift car. The important thing is that it works well as a drift car and that Hubinette notched a victory in it.
And I'm not sure why you think it's "kinda weird lookin". It's nice and level through the corner, seems very well controlled and on line and doesn't appear to need grossly inappropriate levels of camber to stay on course. That's a damn fine drift car if you ask me.

Viper looking good while drifting.....i think so. I know the people here that went do D-1 at Irwindale would agree. Tarzan was drifting in a Super GT viper i believe during the event......it was tight...even when he hit the wall...AHHHH

any car, rwd or other wise, looks awesome when it's got some super over steer going on...
no one has a problem with a viper doing a big sliding burnout, but if it's drifting, it's bad?
riiiiight.
kudos to dodge for chasing GM into the drift scene...

Hmmm... I wonder why he won... maybe the abscence of Tanaguchi or Kazama or any other PRO drifter wasn't there.. maybe? I am not really digging this whole Formula D thing... It's just the SCAA cashing in on the drifting scene. I know this has been discussed before and I do not mean to start a FLAME-WAR... but I have to agree it's kinda lame to see VIPERS and GTO's drifting. All domestics are jumping the bandwagon and are trying to get there RWD cars in on the mess! I long for the days when drifting was underground... in Japan! Damn you D1!

1Viadrft. As a moderator, an "alternate make" drifter (since I use my classic MGB GT) and as a true automotive enthusiast, I am going to politely ask you to SHUT THE FUCK UP!
You're about as dense as they come, you know that? Seriously, I don't usually have a problem with idiotic import lovers who're so wrapped up in the idea that anything and everything American is instantly inferior to its Japanese counterpart, but your arrogance and generally pathetic junior high attitude make it unbearable.
Let's take a look at the judge panel for the inaugural Formula D event.
Tarzan Yamada (a name that, if it escapes you, you're more ignorant than I thought)
Ucchi Utsumi (Lead driver for D1 team DRFT, famous for their radically chopped S15)
Seigou Yamamoto (more famous for his JX100 Chaser sponsored by Mazora, but now team driver for Falken in D1 competition)
Gee, these guys wouldn't know a damn thing about drifting. Especially Tarzan, I mean, how would he know anything about driving a Viper?
Can you even picture the fact that as drifting and Formula Drift gain popularity more of the Japanese drivers will come here? There's going to be more money in Formula Drift in 3 years then there has been in D1 in ten. Parts are going to be developed at a radically rapid rate. Manufacturers are going to continue the push towards inexpensive RWD. Jeez, we're on the threshold of acceptance by the motorsports majority and you're bitching about how "Vipers and GTO's suck. All the events should be won by twenty year old Toyota hatchbacks."
Grow up, little Mr. 300ZX, and learn to have an opinion that isn't based on stacks of comic books and videogames. Otherwise I'll just change your opinion for you so that your presence can actually be tolerated.

Layla's Keeper... I don't give a flying fuck who you are, who you think you are, or what what you drive... but don't curse at me! Having said that I apologize for cursing at you...
First of all... I said, "I think it's lame that Viper's and GTO's are getting into the drift scene". I did not say they sucked! THIS IS MY BIASED OPINION... but my opinion regardless. You obviously adore this whole domestic-drifting scene... and this is your opinion which I respect. Notice i did not curse at you for your beliefs? I was not aware that we could not voice our opinions on these forums... I guess everyone on AF should be banned? Everyone should be able to voice their opinion... even if they think I'm wrong. But cursing is a no-no. I was also not aware that my voicing my post was innappropiate... if... and I say IF there was a problem, YOU as the moderator should have PM'd me or even warned me. Not verbally assaulting me. Oh, did you just threaten to ban me?
Secondly... I along with many of the old-school drift-fans and drifters alike hate the fact that there is a D1GP and Formula D and media attention! This will be the death of drifting as we know it! In case you have not caught on just yet... this is also my opinion.
Why is it you always throw a tantrum when someone voices their opinion about domestic-drifting in a negative manner? That is far from being 'grown-up'... and not very MODERATOR-like. I'm sure Igor would agree?
Having spoken-up for myself I hope and trust that there will be the last time we are rude and obscene to each other?

I love STREET/TOUGE racing and drifting... but it's STUPID when you and a million friends do it! Was there that many problems with street racing 15yrs ago before a certain movie came out? Nope!
There were tons of 'small' get-togethers at small tracks before D1 even dreamed of cashing in! I'm not so sure the same 'fans' you are talking about are the same people I know...

1via, your an idiot
you don't like the D1GP, Formula D, or Media attention? you think its bad for drifting? how dumb can you be?
ok lets say no one ever got into drag racing, there were no championships, never on tv, etc. do you think that all te products and companies would be here today? do you think records would be as high as they are today? do you think the sport would have any credibility? NO thats why attention is good, positive attention causes manufacture of better products specifically designed for that type of event, attention gives a broder range of ideas and more people join in, making better competition and more variety... without interest the sport would die, few people would do it, not enough consumers would buy products, they'd be discontinued or never even made, therefore giving you less quality and selection. now tell me again why drifting getting recognition is bad
I'm not a huge fan of domestic cars drifting, mostly because untill resently most domestic owners just thought a big smoky donut or spinning your tires through a little curve was cool and they never really knew how to do the big drifts back to back and such. now they are learning this stuff, and thats making the import scene step up even more as to not get shown up in the sport they started...
I honestly believe that imports will dominate the sport for some time now, but domestics will be going at them plenty and giving them a run for their money.
and on a final note, don't act like a moderator can't flame you, insult you, scream, and yell at you like any other member would. although I think I can do it better than most of them... but thats just my opinion :)
Good Day
EDIT: oh yea, and I can't see the pictures :(

1via, have you ever truly been involved with an "underground" motorsport? I crewed and assisted in the design of an ISMA supermodified, a sanctioning body and type of race car you've probably never heard of, and I know what "underground" equals.
Underground motorsport equals dying motorsport.
A supermodified is a highly specialized open wheel short track race car, regional to upstate New York, northern Ohio, and portions of Michigan, Indiana, and New England. There is no televised coverage for the series, no manufacturer of chassis (all chassis are hand built and no two are exactly alike, even chassis jig mates tend to have variation between them), engines (methanol fueled 468ci Chevy big blocks with mechanical fuel injection) are hideously expensive and there are only 4 or 5 engine builders around (three that actually build good engines), purses are small (to the point where winning won't cover the fuel and tire bill for the night), and young talent that runs the series gets caught in a dead end instead of moving up to faster and more prominent series.
That's what "underground" gets you. You get a cult audience, a few dozen diehard participants, and you get to watch your form of motorsport wither and die on the vine.
Even if you dislike the professional drifting series the SCCA has set up, you have to respect that the attention goes towards keeping the sport alive and growing. Not to mention the SCCA is also, in conjunction with Formula Drift, organizing drifting schools and amateur events at tracks they sanction across the states. Tracks like Watkins Glen, Mid-Ohio, Elkhart Lake, Laguna Seca (imagine Formula Drift attacking the Corkscrew :sunglasse ), Sears Point, Barber, VIR, and so on.
The media attention on the pros means money and attention for the amateurs as well. It means respect, acceptance, and organization for all drifters. It means drifting won't become the next ISMA, or D.I.R.T big block modifieds, or Main Event super latemodels, or any other number of slowly departing racing series.
And, if you must know, the whole reason I support domestics and european cars in drifting is because I sometimes think I'll puke if I see one more Nissan 240SX/Silvia/Sil-Eighty/Onevia in coverage of drift events. I always give kudos for originality.

Alex Pheiffer and Hubinette should have been in the finals and the 86 would have won. or at any rate passed the viper around the turn regardless of the 300 hp diff.

Even the Drift King, though a judge on D1, encourages people to go to sanctioned drift events or tracks to practice there style. Why, because there's something called control, plus pro's are there to help you advance and give you tips on how to drive better.

underground is the way to go, huh?
riiight.
there weren't many people street racing until those movies came out?
what rock were you hiding under?
the movies didn't start it, they just showcased it.
before d1 cashed in on it?
drifting is too big, and will fail?
yeah, corporate sponsorships and money are the two things that KILL a racing series... ;)
rally racing, as big as it is, had to start somewhere. people thought it was dumb, like you do.
so they obviously stopped rallying, right?
I love STREET/TOUGE racing and drifting... but it's STUPID when you and a million friends do it!
and you obviously like tickets for reckless driving, right?
it's one thing to do it, but it's another to condone it, and prefer it to a safe environment where you don't run the risk of HURTING PEOPLE.

Ho-hum.... and I supposse no one gets injured at the track... what a magical place!
Don't you agree there are tons more people out street-racing and drifting than ever? Why is that?
Yes... I love the illegal stuff! But I only like it when it's me and a couple of buddys around. WE know more or less what we are doing... unlike the army of 16 yr. olds running rampant... sorry, to burst anyone's bubble, but I'm not injuring anyone and I have as much as a chance as injuring myself or someone else as I would the track. Believe it or not... I take every precaution. Not saying it's the best thing ever... I'm not even condoning it! I agree... you guys should go to the track... where you can be professionally supervised. Just not my cup o' tea. No offense is meant by this, flylwsi... you are one of the few I respect out here. You can't tell me you do not indulge in street-racing either....
Oh... BTW, I love RALLY! It's not as popular as drifting however (In the US anyway)! This is like saying: Oh F1 and NASCAR is popular! But how many dorks do you see trying to mimic these guys on the roads? My main concern is that DRIFTING is becoming too mainstream... it's the same deal that happend with the SpoCom scene.

saying you love street racing and illegal drifting sounds like condoning it to me...
i've never participated in organized street racing. ever.
most of the time, i get into it with someone on the freeway, and that's it.
you take every precaution, but you don't control the other people driving where you are (not your friends).
yes, people get hurt at the track...
but when was the last time you were at a track event where there WASN'T a fully prepped medical staff on site?

Never participated in organized street racing? Suuure, buddy! I got ya, I got ya! :wink-wink: But racing on the Freeway is probably worse than me racing in the secluded mountain roads, my friend.

loved the women comment... but I agree with both of you kinda of... I don't think street racing in an organized fashion or on busy streets as in the road where everyone cruises on the weekends... which tends to be the busiest street in town...
although I have raced on roads that are on the outskirts of town, and are totally flat for almost a mile so you can see plenty ahead of you... and only late at night when most people aren't out around there... and I see the highway racing as being acceptable too... as long as you have decent tires so theres a lower risk of a blowout and injury to you or others... etc. anyways I'm right so you can stop arguing now :) :)

i'm glad that people can agree, somewhat...
and honestly, i don't think anyone has said anything super wrong, it's just the way it's written.
you can't convey emotion/inflection with the written word, especially in this format.

Secondly... I along with many of the old-school drift-fans and drifters alike hate the fact that there is a D1GP and Formula D and media attention! This will be the death of drifting as we know it! In case you have not caught on just yet... this is also my opinion.

If your an old school drift fan, then I fucking invented this sport.
I resent that theres media attention, but the fact is Formula D is homegrown talent and I love it.
Ever heard of Signal Auto? Well Atsushi Kuroi, driver of their cars AND a 972hp RB26 powered S13 told me personally he wants to see more domestic drifters in action. Bet you didnt know domestics are coveted in japan.
Tarzan Yamada owns 2 domestics. A PT Turbo and a Viper SRT-10
Deez nuts sucka.

ya thats true, but if i were a JGTC racer, i'd be driving more than that, like for a daily driver i would have the scion xb, or toyota bB in japan, and then the others would be race spec cars, like an evo, and silvias for drift, and of course the trueno.

i'm not going to throw more gas on the fire, since i entered this argument late.
but i will say that 1via, your thick-headedness never ceases to amaze me.
if you sat down and took one look at yourself, long and hard, you'd realize that you come off as just the type of person you hate.
why do police crack-down more on drifting these days? because of people like you who do it in the streets. and btw, i'm sure you're SUCH a huge touge monster in your big heavy automatic car... :loser:
Formula D is all well and good. it gives some of the smaller guys a chance to show off. the only thing i don't like is the Mopar sponsorship. as i was telling Dorikin over MSN, i think Hubinette sold out. i personally wouldn't accept any offers from HUGE names like Mopar, GM or anything like that. if it were a small company/garage wanting me to drive their car to gain exposure, then i guess i'd help. but a big company, no way. not even Nissan or Toyota. drifting to me is just supposed to be about fun, not about how many times you win or how much money or exposure you get. i couldn't care less if a bunch of riceboys knew my name at a competition. i drift for me and me alone. there's a D1 driver search coming to Canada in August. i'll probably enter, but if i don't move on, i won't care. as long as i had fun doing it.
corporations are trying to make drifting some big "competition". in reality, i think drifting should not be a competition at all. everything should be like a Club4AG drift day, where everyone just goes out, does there thing, gains knowledge and experience, and has fun doing it.
oh, btw Octagon. D1 has only been in operation since 2001.

did i ever say my car was faster then yours?
hmm...let me re-read my post...
no! no i did not.
i said your car is a heavy automatic boat-on-wheels, and you should stop calling it a "touge monster" and stop thinking it and you are hot shit when you are both equally not. stop trying to be Takumi.
but hold on a second, wait, did i ever say i hated domestics either?
re-reading post again...
no! no i did not. you need your reading glasses, gramps?
in fact, i almost shit myself this week when my friend brought his 5.0 into the shop. beautiful piece of machinery, and i also love muscle cars.
and what are you going to do, "challenge" me? puh-leeze.
i don't give a rat's ass when the D1 was started. i did not get my info from Super Street. in fact i have hated that magazine since day 1 and only use it to cut out the pictures of the nice cars they do articles on. the rest is used to line the bottom of my bird's cage. i found out about drifting in 1997, WHEN I WENT TO JAPAN AND SAW THE CARS IN PERSON! and i've been obsessed ever since. so you can say all you want about Super Street and all this shit, but i knew what the true meaning of "Silvia" was back when you were probably thinking "altezza lights are the shyt, y0!"
but why am i trying to prove myself to you? why should i care what some 17 year old drift fanboy on the other side of the continent thinks of me?
i don't.
so get off deez nutz.
PS maybe you should STOP TYPING RANDOM words in CAPITAL letters. it's annoying...much like everything else you do.

And, Brian... no, that is not a challenge... don't be silly! Do you really wanna drive your happy-self all the way from Canada? I have to admit it would be interesting though. You are one of the few that like to talk trash about my car and don't have much car yourself! I'm not going around and saying my car is the best... I did not mention my car once until you started with your stuff and I hate talking trash about your car. I, like you, can care less what you or anyone else thinks! Did I ever say I was the fastest on the Downhill or anything? BTW: My reference to my car in my Sig is in fact referring to the massiveness of the car... hence "MONSTER".
