I have a 1996 1500 GMC w/ 4.3L Vortec. I went to do my
yearly Air Force PT test the other morning and when I went
to get back in a leave it would not start. Put a new fuel
filter on it, still no luck. got a trailer and hauled it back home
and stopped by autozone to have them hook it up and see
if any codes would come back and tell me what could be wrong.
but got no return codes. The guy told me it could be the
ignition module and if I brought it to them they could check
it and see if it's broke. went home, took the distributer cap
off, rotor off. points on dis cap were fairly corroded, and
rotor had some blacking. But could not figure out how to
remove the ignition module. I'm going to check to see if i'm
getting fire off one of the wires this afternoon, thought I
see if someone could help with telling me how to get the
ignition mod off, or any other useful info regarding my problem.
could really use any help. thanks much

Have someone listen near the gas tank when you turn your key on, when you turn your key on the fuel pump should turn on for 2-3 seconds to pressurize the lines(just key on, don't crank). If there is no noise, turn key off and get some wire to go from battery positive post to a red wire with a connector on it sticking out of the harness between your underhood fuse panel and firewall. If the pump still doesn't run with 12V to this red wire, your pump is either shot or there is a wiring problem between the fuel pump relay and the pump
If you do hear the pump running, replace the distributor cap, there are quite a few corrosion cases on 4.3L engines and misfire/ no start conditions, get a cap with brass elements and not aluminum

Did you feed the hamster in the roll cage lately?
sorry I could not resist that. I also suggest that you
go buy a Chilton's or truck repair manual for your vehicle. It will tell you where the module is, or call a local dealer!
Good luck!
P.S. make sure you feed the hamster and keep him warm!

take off distribrator cap. the modulator is at the rear of the cap. it has 2 screws, the same size as the distriberator screws.. there will be probably a green and white wire going to it. if you take it off. orilies or most auto zones wil test it free.. also check coil and pick up coil with ohm meter. you will need to check fuel pressure at throttlle body to see if you have a nuff presssure. and tell seirra k 1500 maybe he or she needs to check its turtle cage and be resptable to people and try to help or not speek in greek................... my 1991 5.7 fuel pressure is 13 psi. it should be between 9-13 psi...... i dont know about a 6 cylinder 96 modle. but you should check.

iggycat,
96 doesn't have a modulator, its a cam position sensor and fuel pressure should be 60-66 psi
