High idle, engine shutoff

okay, heres the deal, my 93 ford probe gt keeps on reving by itself up to about 3 grand, me and my dad replaced the TPS, but it still does it, the igniter went bad, we rigged a gm ignitor and bypassed the ignitor in the distributor, but all the work we have done, we still can't keep the car running, very aggitating, i was wanting to know if anyone has had the same problems and if they have fixed it and how, any replies will be appreciated

my 94 probe does the same thing. Interesting to hear that replacing the TPS doesn't fix it. That was first thing on my list to try after reading online. The problem is only getting worse. For me it usually happens right after the car warms up and the only way I can keep the car running is to ride the clutch until it settles down. Also there is usually a really foul smell when it happens. I 'd really appreciate any info about this problem too. Feel free to email me if you like .
Thanks
Phil

Well, check the following and make any adjustments you may need. Also, you should really post up on www.probetalk.com . I assume you've been there already tho' since you've heard of the GM ignitor mod. Make sure you have all of the hoses in place. If the engine starts revs to about 2-3k then dies, look for a leak in the intake elbow. A crack or that large hose may be off (at the elbow and also at the rear valve cover)

Here are some write up I've done that I post up for most people to see:

If your idle fluctuates between 500-1500 rpm in a cyclical fashion, look for a crack or an air leak at the intake elbow (especially in the folds). The old rubber elbow tends to become brittle over time and crack. Like this:

If that is the case read Rick96PGT's write-up on silicone tape:

http://forums.probetalk.com/showthread.php?t=1701054582&highlight=silicone+tape

Try adjusting your throttle position sensor (TPS). You can do this by following the directions in the link provided. Also, the directions don't specify, but the fans should be off in diagnostic mode. So set the TPS at the point where the fans just turn off.

Link to Rick's TPS adjustment page: http://www.rs-productions.com/RSP_Motors/tech/tps/tps.htm

Find the diagnostics box:

Use a small paperclip to jump the TEN and GND (pic follows):

Jumped diag box:

Then rotate the TPS (keep the screws slightly “draggy” to hold the TPS):

Thanks for your quick reply. You're the man. Not only did you give me a probable solution but you gave me one more in keeping with my mechanical skills :) look for a crack and put tape on it. Well I looked and sure enough there is a crack. While I was checking that I found the clamp at the engine end was loose. I tightened that and it's already much better. I got the tape last night $5 at home depot and I'll try that today hopefully.
Thanks again

update--
Tried taking it off to tape it and it was so old and brittle it split. So I'm riding the shoe leather express till tomorrow morning when the dealer parts dept opens up. (hopefully it's in stock) anyone have any idea how much it'll run me?

You can still repair it. Just use a lot of silicone tape.

Also, go to a junk yard and search for a '93-'97 Ford Probe GT, Mazda MX6 LS, or Mazda 626 ES (basically all of the V6 engines). They share the same intake elbow.

It will be expensive from the dealer. You can also make your own, but you may need more technical skill (PVC piping, a 1/2" plastic bung, some epoxy and some rubber couplers)

I got one at the Mazda dealer today, as the ford dealer didn't have one in stock and i needed to be able to drive it today. $67 for a piece of rubber (sigh) but it works like a charm now so I'm a happy camper. I did think about using the whole roll of tape on it, but I wasn't feeling all that comfortable with it. Thanks again for your advice and for the links to all the pictures and threads.

i found out the problem with my car and all other probes with the same problem, it is the 2 coolant temperature sensors, they are most likely broken if your car is doing the same as mine, and makes the car run really rich like it isn't warmed up, and revs up to about 3 grand by itself, once i replaced both of those temperature sensors it stopped doing it, and now my car runs great, if anyone has any questions about it, please ask

I have a 97 Ford Probe GTS, I have had it since February, and I love it. My boyfriend has 2 Probes he uses for parts, and then he has a probe that he drives everyday thats all hooked up that he puts in shows, I want to put a KLZE in my probe and build it from the bottom up, and maybe one day install some twin turbos on it.
