Why the 86?

Cause of Initial D.

J/k my friend has one, and its an awesome car, a true sports car in fact, light weight, free revving, fun, realitvley cheap to own and keep running. But Initial D has brought the wrong people into the Corolla scene.

oh well, every "scene" has dumb people that don't know about it, just show them up and maybe they'll stop trying :)

Did any of you bother to look at the video? Initial D had shit to do with why the 86 was popular. The 86 is popular because it is one of the last Toyota FR vehicles that was affoardable to anyone, and tunable for a limited budget. They are also lightweight, and have a somewhat rigid chassis that gives them excellent handling characteristics. Look at the 2 cars in the video. They both put out 150ps max, but are able to control the speed/power through the corners as if it were designed only for that.

Initial D didn't make the 86 any more than it made the R32 GTR or the sileighty. The cars were popular long before the cartoon to enthusiasts.

I watched the video. I guess because you live in Japan, and the 86 is almost a reverred car there. But over in north america, people didnt know shit about the AE86, now, they all want them. Rusty hachis are selling for roughly Y450,000 with 200,000km on the clock!!!! Also initial D has made the Sileighty popular, just come to the 240SX forums and see.

BTW the video is great, I wish I had the skill they have. Or the cars

Downloading the video now.

In the UK the Corolla GT Coupe (as it's known here) has always been popular because it makes a fantastic Road-Rally car (Night Road Rallying is perfectly legal in the UK)

when almost half D1GP cars are 86s, you cant really go wrong. the whole Initial D thing could have been with any car the writer used for the main character. from what i've seen from Drift Bible, Tsuchiya describes the 86 as THE FUN DRIFT CAR.

DIGP doesnt just have HKS and Apex cars, there are alot more smaller garages that have DI cars than major tuning companies. Rage of Xenin was right in saying almost half of the cars are 86's
