Programming Instructions for 02 Transponder Key

Hello all. This is my first post on this forum.

I recently lost my computerized transponder key for my 02 Camry and purchased another one at a Toyota dealership.

In addition to paying for the key, however, they wanted to charge me an add'l $60 just to program it. Without the programming, the key only opens the door and trunk, but does not start the engine.

Does anyone know the instructions to program this key without having to use Toyota's computer tool (and costing me $60 to do a 2-minute job)? Any help would be appreciated.

It seems you need a Transponder Key Programmer tool. Your only hope appears to be a locksmith.

I may be mistaken...

Thanks for the quick reply, Brian.

I already have another "master" key that works, so I think I only need the instructions. Yes, I can go to the dealership or a locksmith, but I was wondering if anyone already has the instructions and is kind enough to share them or email a copy of it.

I just noticed on eBay that people sell a blank key and instructions to program it. I may go that route since it will still be way cheaper than the dealership/locksmith.

Try this procedure:
02 TO EARLY-03 CAMRY's: The programming sequence for adding another key (Toyota key part number 89785-26020) to the Camry, according to the key company (ILCO) catalog is as follows: Make sure all windows and doors are closed, and insert the master key in the ignition. Cycle the ignition key ON/OFF 5 times (don't turn to START position) and leave the key in the lock. Open/Close the driver side door 6 times. Remove the original key and insert the new duplicate key, BUT DO NOT TURN THE KEY ON. The theft light will stay off after 60 to 80 seconds indicating the re-programming was successful.

Do not laugh while executing this sequence.

FYI

According to the ILCO catalog, all of the key numbers programmed into a 98 to Early-03 ECM (other than the number of the key you are using) can be deleted by using the following sequence:

Simultaneously depress & release the brake and accelerator pedals 1 time. Insert a working key into the ignition but do not turn it. Within 15 seconds depress & release the accelerator pedal 6 times. Within 20 seconds depress & release the brake pedal 7 times. The security light will flash indicating that all key numbers, other than the one being used, have been deleted from the ECM memory. Within 10 seconds remove the key from the ignition switch. This is now the only key that will work.

Thanks a lot, Brian.

I'll try your instructions and let you know of the results.

You think these are strange, you should see some of the procedures for Lexus...

Hi Brian. I tried using the instructions you provided, but I could not get the key to correctly start my 02 Camry XLE.

Instead, I located and used the following instructions. It worked, so I'm a happy camper!! They may also work for all 98 through 02 models. YMMV. Thanks again for your help.

Programming spare keys: for 1998 to 2002

1.. Copy the cuts of the original working key onto the appropriate
transponder blank.

2.. Enter the car and close all of the doors.

3.. Simultaneously depress and release both the brake and accelerator
pedals.

4.. Within five seconds, insert a working pre-programmed key into the
ignition cylinder, and turn to the "on" position.

5.. Within fifteen seconds of turning the ignition, depress and release
the accelerator pedal five times for a primary key. (Depress and release
four times for a valet key.)

6.. Within twenty seconds, depress and release the brake pedal six times
for a primary key. (Depress and release only times for a valet key.)

7.. Turn the ignition to the "off" position and immediately remove the
key.

8.. Within ten seconds of removing the key, insert the new key and turn it
to the "on" position.

9.. Within ten seconds, depress and release the accelerator pedal once.
The security light will then flash for 60 seconds and then turn off. When
the security light stops flashing the programming should be complete.

10.. Start the vehicle to verify that programming was successful.

Looks like there was a change somewhere in 2002. Your ignition must be in the early set. The one I found was for 2002 and later. Glad you found it.

The transponder circuit acts as a variable ground for the starter relay, so another alternative is to just permanently wire that to ground.

I'm curious about something. I made a regular copy of a master key onto a plain non-transponder key just to have as a backup, and as expected, it opens everything, just doesn't turn the engine on. So it seems that what stops the Valet key from opening the trunk or glovebox is the actual cut of the metal, not the transponder chip.

If this is the case, why are the programming instructions different for the valet key? Thanks.

Hi All, I have an 03 MR2 and had to use the old instructions.Car came with onlt 1 key and I wanted a backup. Also as far as the programming of a Valet key this prevents the Valet from using that key to program a new one.
