I replaced a bad starter on a 1986 Chevy k10 pickup with a 305 and now when i crank it over it just keeps going even with the key out of the ignition. It stops when i disconnect the battery. I took the starter out and had it bench tested and i was told it was ok. I replaced ignition switch, still the same . I tried shimming , still the same . Can anyone help?

hi your starter is most likley hooped check out the bearings and the bendix drive real well the solinoid is sticking under load uap should be $100 for a rebuilt one or find a friend with the same truck and offer them beer to try thier starter on your rig good luck jj.

ground a testlight and probe the little(signal) wire it should light up only when the key is turned to crank. if it stays on you have problems in the steering column with the rods to the switch. if it only comes on in crank buy a new starter

I had the same problem with my 85 recently and it was a battery that was not holding a full charge. I replaced the battery and the starter works fine now. Might not be your problem, but it fixed mine.

His stater will not turn off and has nothing to do with the battery.

A >? and a possible solution...is the starter not turning off or is it still engaged...could need another shim might be too tight against the flexplate/flywheel..or possibly are your connections "twisted" so that the pos. term side is too close to the ign side of the starter..use a test light and see if you have constant current on the smaller wire...should be a dead disconect when you leave go of the key

Nope, solenoid could have a faulty connection and won't allow the bendix to retrack when the power is removed from the switch.
