help about to go crazy

Ok does anyone know how to disable the auto door lock feature on my '99 windstar?? this feature drives me crazy and I have no idea why anyone would want it as there are already child saftey locks. I tried some instructions on the f150 site that involved turning the key off and on and hitting the unlock button etc. my owners manual only says that the dealer can reprogram these. I called the dealer and they want 1/2 hour labor ie 47$ to do it. well I am not gonna do that. help me out before I start cutting wires

Anyone have any idea on this? I'm in the same boat with my 2001. The manual says you can disable it with the door keypad if you have the keyless entry, but windstars with just the remote need to see the stealer! :banghead: Gotta be an easier (and cheaper :naughty: ) way!

I would think if a person had the factory wiring diagram it would be possible to locate the wire coming from the shift selector and cut it and either cap it or install a switch so as to allow enable/disable at the flick of a switch. I have a Haynes book with a rough diagram in it but not detailed enough to determine which wire would have to be undone. I don't care for the auto lock on my '99 either but would like to have it when going to a large city or on a trip. Having to go through a compicated procedure each time you want to enable/disable sounds to much like work to me. Maybe someone with the diagram could join in here. If this is not possible, for what ever reason, my appologies.

I hated this feature on our '98 Windstar at first, but have gotten used to it. Kids, you know. But I did dig up an answer from the owner's manual. There's a convoluted way to disable the autolock. Only works with keyless feature. And I quote:
1. Turn ignition from OFF to ON/ACC.
2. Press power door "UNLOCK" three times.
3. Turn ignition from ON/ACC to OFF.
4. Press power door "UNLOCK" three times.
5. Turn ignition from OFF to ON/ACC.
6. Put a yellow bow on your head and dance like a butterfly.

Steps 1-5 must be completed within 20 seconds or the procedure will have to be repeated. If the procedure needs to be repeated, 30 seconds must elapse first. I just made up Step 6.

Good luck. Now you can help me...I'm trying to get the rear brake drums off and can't figure out how to loosen the shoes. The adjuster access is very inconvenient--I can't see the cogs to turn and can't feel my way through it. Help.

To INGELHEIMFIVE, To remove the rear drums you can hit them with a hammer( they can take the abuse, you won't damage them) Most of the time they just need a couple of good wacks to loosen them enough to remove them. Hit the drum along the outside flat edge nearest to you while turning the drum.

I concur with Fcrew's suggestion of whacking the outside edge of the drums to loosen them.

Apparently the impact temporarily distorts the drum metal throughout ... helping to break it away from the hub.

To increase this distortion effect, and to minimize the chance of wheel bearings getting damaged ... I further recommend that the bottom edge of the drum be supported on a hard surface. The rear springs should be only slightly compressed, so keep the jack in place.
