sepentine belt

my son in college has an 1989 delta 88, and calls home last week and says pulley was squeeking(dont know which one) this week he calls and says sepentine belt is broken,. my question how to replace the belt? anyone know? and which pilley stoped working that caused belt to break?

thats a hardone since without seeing the engine theres no way of telling which of the pulleys went ... just better hope the main pulley wasnt the one that went. also when a bearing goes it usually takes a while and a couple miles not just a few feet so this indication could have been avoided.

I recently heard about a problem very similar to this. A pulley locked up and caused a queal because the belt was being pulled around the pulley and it finally wore the belt out. The first thing I would have him do is check all the pulleys (except the large main one) to see if any will not move. If you find one, that compontent may need to be replaced. If it is the AC compressor, you should be able to buy a belt for the car without AC to bypass it. That way you can wait a couple of months to replace it.

my bet is that it is the tensioner pulley. $15 from the autoparts store.

My water pump pulley went bad on mine. Ask him if his car sounds like a disel engine (if he's mechanically inclined) ask him if the engine sounds like the lifters need adj.
The reason I'm saying this is cause on my Olds, I thought that my lifters need a adjustment bigtime. The car sounded like a loud disel engine. All this time, the bearings in the water pump pully were goin bad and eventualy snapped off.
Easy fix and now she runs and sounds like a purring kitten. G/L
