This happend to me too, i honestly can't remember exactly how I fixed it. I remember having to use another key to move my release button on the shift lever for a day or so. If I remember rightly, the problem just kind of fixed itself. I hope this is at least a little bit of help :)

thanks for replying. Yeah a while back the button became sticky and i had to use something to pull it back out and then I'll be able to switch the key to lock position and took it out but it did fix it self too. But last time when I forced it out again, it seems like something got unhooked somewhere there because whenever i push that button it won't come out anymore unless forcing it...everytime and even that button is out the key is still not moving to lock position. sucks because I can move the shifter lever even if i'm not stepping on the brake which is pretty dangerous.

You may need to replace your ignition tumbler. They don't cost very much, but a pain in the butt to replace.

I am not sure if this will help ya or not. But if your button on the shifter knob is stuck. You can acctually remove the shifter knob by removing the spring clip located in front of the shifter. Get yourself a small screwdriver. eyeglass screwdriver works great and pry out the spring clip and the top of the shifter will come off compleatly. Once that is off you should see a white button. that is what will let you shift threw the gears. If that is stuck in the down position sounds like that the cable is broken or streached to the point it won't shift and lock in to gear. Or could be some thing a bit more problimatic with the transmission it self. Hopefully it's just the shifter knob that is sticking and not working properly and not the trans.

thanks for the help guys. my shifter knob is working now and key goes to lock position now. When I took the knob off and pushed the white thing there, i knew i found the problem. I bought a replacement knob from a junkyard near my place and it did fix the problem. I wouldn't know that the knob has a pin on front side that's why i thought there is no way I could remove it but with your help guys i figure how to fi it.
thanks
