ok, I have been wanting a quad for a long time and am moving out to the woods with millions of trails right next door so I figure I might as well get one now. I noticed that blasters are fairly cheap. and a 200cc 2 stroke/6 speed sounds like it wouold make for lts of fun. but I know a person with a kdx80 and another with a kx80. the kdx80 is slow as anything, but the kx80 hauls for a 80. both are 2 stroke and they are way different form each other.
I was wondering if anyone has ridden a new yamaha blaster and if it is quick at all, whats the top speed like. my uncle has a couple new 250EX's (02 and 03) and they are pretty quick from a stop, and fast enough for me when ripping through trails, but whenever I get in the open on a dune or down the beach it just isnt fast enough for me.
I have ridden 300EX's, 250EX's, those are the only quads ive ridden that are worth anything. doeds the blaster compare to either at all in terms of acceleration or top speed?
I really want a banshee or a raptor but I also am planning on getting an R6 this spring so I gotta save some of the cash.

Blasters....theyre extremly fast for how much you pay for one, but dont compare to a banshee or raptor. They have the fastest lap times of anything in its cc class (200- 250), if your a big person they may not seem very comfortable, but if your not, its a good quad. But if your not satisfied with it's speed you can always modify the hell out of it to where it can leave your buddy's stock banshee in the dust :ylsuper: .

I want the TRX450R now, went to honda dealership and watched one come from assembly after leaving the crate and man it isa so sick, I dot think id get the blaster, maybe if I was to do the 240cc kit but I just dont think it would have the power for my taste. plus jumping is my favorite and the TRX is setup for it.

reply got cut... the banshee smokes my LtZ,a raptor and the blaster, the banshee has a ton of mods, I bought the DOHC 4 stroke due to crappy weather up in New England, the 2 stroke has a hard time running in 5 degree weather.. if your into 2 strokes spend the extra money and buy a banshee. I like the banshee as far as specs go, I mean, good travel, GREAT acceleration, good speed and everything but it isnt the best looking thing I dont think, looks dont really matter much, but I also am always discouraged from 2 strokes by all in my family, everyone has 4 strokes and reccomends them over the 2's. mileage, reliability....

I agree with that, thats why when it came time to purchase mine I went with a four stroke, The new Honda coming out looks sick but I'm sure it has a price that will make you sick as well =) My friend is always fixing the banshee when we go out its kind of annoying to sit in the 100 degree weather and listen to complaining about fouling plugs, with mine its turn the key and go...

not really, when compared to the banshee,raptor,predator,ds650,yfz400
cheaper or the same price as the 3 yamahas and probably close to the price of the predator and ds650.
the new raptor 350 kind caught my eye, but I mean if Im already spending 5k, why not save the extra 1k and get the baddest machine around???

I had a blaster that had a few mods done to it.. It was awsome! It felt much faster then my old 250X did. There are also insane numbers of mods out there for them as well. If you want a cheap, fun four wheeler, I would definately look into a blaster. That is, unless your bigger in size. They are kinda small. Im 5'11 @ 165 lbs and I felt fine on it.

stock for stock, the blaster is on the same level as a 300ex- they are about the same speed, both are air cooled. Also, just to warn you, that air cooled two stroke wont take much heat. my friend's 98 blaster has gone through 3 pistons since he bought it two years ago. But they are still fun as hell to ride

Just bought a blaster two weeks ago. All I can say is fun fun fun. Smoked a yamaha 125 dirt bike topped it at close to 60mph and pulls wheelies in 1st and 2nd without even pulling up. I am 5'8 180lbs and the thing just pulls. Tons and tons of mods for this quad. I'm already ready to pipe and jet the thing which can be done for about $370 doing it myself. Price is great for the power u get. Sure a raptor could beat it in a race but with the darn thing being so light you can maneuver through trails and turns with ease. My advice buy it 2 stroke or not the thing is a toy which already means maintinence anyways!

i think the blaster is pretty quick for the price also. i bought a 2004 blaster and banshee. bought the blaster for my girl, and the banshee for me. but my friends seem to have more fun riding the blaster than she does. so depending on your size, and "need for speed", the blaster is a good machine for anyone around 200lbs to have fun on.i THINK my blaster does in the high 50 mph range maybe even 60mph. but the banshee is what you might go for if you have the urge to fly. i ride with some guys who have 400ex's and we are even off the line until i hit 4th and its over, ( i fly by ). and mine are both stock..atm...

the 400ex is like a caddilac... it has sweet suspension from the factory, its the only quad ive ever ridden that likes to take corners, until i rode the 450r. the 400ex is perfect accept for the power issue, it has none.
then there is the 450r, very very nice quad. way more power than the 400ex but not enough for my riding tastes.
my friend has an 87 banshee... let me tell you. 404 big bore kit. weisco pistons, bigger carbs, fmf pipes, the works.... rediculous power. this thing gives my cr500 a run for its money. but it doesnt turn worth a damn.
so if your an ameture id say go with the 400ex, if you wanna race and youve got a little skill, get the 450r, if your all about the power and roosting everything, get the banshee
and as for the 2 stoke/ 4 stroke reliability. neither one isd better than the other. as long as you know how to jet the carbs right and no how to maintain your bike they will last you. look at the factory specs on either type of engine and they both need a rebuild after 30 or so hours

just got back from mexico and saw a guy tearing up the track nearby on a YFZ450 with paddles and man I am gonna get the TRX450 if anything now, maybe the YFz but Im more of a honda fan. my brother in law bought an old 80 TT500 while we were down there, 600 bucks but it had new shocks, the huge plastic tank for LONG rides, a new spare clutch cable in place that just needs the ends connected if the current one breaks, I guess the guy was getting ready to entere one of tghe baja races or whatever. but holy smokes that thing is a monster. so much power. I didnt do the compression release thing right my first attempt on starting it and just started walking again this afternoon. my ankle was huge and black and blue and it threw my shin into the bars and bruised that too. once I figured it out though I could start it with my hurt ankle though so no big deal, didnt get too crazy on it though as I havent even touched a dirt bike for almost 4 years Id say.
and cndctrdj, what do you mean no power, is it that you are just spoiled from your cr500? lol
cuz the 250's my uncle has are still fun and have decent power but they just lack any speed whenyou get em in the open, the 300's we rented once were good all around, I kept pulling up step dunes through all gears and it goes pretty good, figured the 400 must be alot better still.
Im getting ready to sell my 2 cars and Im gona buy a nice clean 97+ dodge dakota or something similar, ive found alot for around 3500-4k and I should have enough to put half down on a new YFZ/TRX 450 or buy a used 400EX/KFX400/Z400.
saw that KFX700, wasnt the first one a 750?
just not sure what it wouod feel like riding a quad with a CVT, probably prety nice as fr as staying in the powerband but just seems like you dont get to control anything so it wont be as fun.

they already have a HRC kit that comes with a new cam, new slip on, new air bok and intake elbow and new jetting for 300 bucks. sucks you gotta pay the dealer to install to not void the warranty I bet.
the new 400 EX looks nice tho cuz the gear ratios have been changed, has reverse and has the TRX450 styling. reverse I dont use too often but sometimes Im glad its there. but I dont really wanna get an air cooled cuz I ride things kinda hard sometimes and worry that that puny litle oil cooler isnt doing enough but Im sure honda wouldnt put an insufficient one on its quad for years and years so its probably in my head.
I made it a resolution to have my cars sold and have by the end of march so that I can then start shopping for my desert toy.

well, when you say no power, it worries me, I know it must though cuz I ride the 250's down there and the power is there but im suire just cuz of the short gearing which leaves no top speed to speak of.
I am looking at the raptor as well, its got reverse and I remember in one of the ATV mags I had they tested the DS650, raptor, KFX750(I thought), polaris predator and the were all in the upper 70mph range I think and the raptor comes with 20" rears so I could throw some 22's on the back and FLY.
I wouldnt mind getting off and pulling it backwards if I had too as long as Im not on a rocky mountain which is where I usually need it but Ill just ride the 250's to climb with when im down there, most riding is the beach or home-made tracks in the sand or maybe some woods.

well again power was relative to me. if your really worried about not enough power. the 450r is your ticket. it throws rost like a champ, has a high top speed, and will climb and hill you aim it at.(im so jelous of atv tracktion) its got decent top end, the thing just pulls forever.

I most likely will end up with one of the 450MX based quads, cuz 3what it comes down to is Id rather go faster and have to get off and turn it around myself if I needed to. the oen thing that will suck, but would be a problem even on a 300EX I bet, is when I ride on the beach with my cousin on his 250 Im gonna have to always stop and wait or ride slow.

I like the blaster... It's a nice fun quad but........ Until you ride something with more power you won't realize how much more power there is in other bikes. Not sure if you're in the game to upgrade eventually but I can guarantee you one thing.... You'll out grow the blaster quick. If you're in this for the adrenaline you'll quickly find your self saying, I want more power, I want to go faster, I want to do bigger jumps... In addition to the power, the dimensions result in instability.
I finally just got back into riding and I bought the TRX-450. It is worth every penny. I couldn't imaging putting a dime into making it faster. I got a pretty good deal on it. I got it out the door with nerf bars for 6500.00 I put 2500 down and I pay 109 a month for 4 years. Not too bad.. I spend that in a night going out with the fellas.
You can spend under 4 grand for the blaster and dump over a grand in parts to make it faster but you'll still have the same dimensions. The wheel base is short and narrow. Tends to flip easily...
Hey, if you're gonna get wet, you may as well go swimming. Go for the gusto!
Safe riding!

I cant imagine his goes 45-50, we have sandrails also and even on a giant 33" or so tire on stock VW gearing we can top out 3rd, which Im sure is damn fast but stock a VW tops out at like 80 with stock tires, and thats a long road to hit 80 in an old single port 1600. but 3rd gear is SMOKING those quads, if I remember right 1st gear wastes the quad of course, then 2nd gear pulls farther, then if you stay mobbing in 2nd the quad will just start to gain slowly, but 3rd gear and its over with. and this isnt sand, its hard packed dirt where we raced so the quad wasnt being held back by the resistance of the soft stuff at all. and about wanting more power, Ive ridden CR125, CR250, about to maybe buy a YZ500 from a friend(hopefully) and a TT500 and for the kicker a 01 YZF-R1. and even on the R1, I found myself wanting to pull harder, never right from the line cuz first gear is the most insane thing ive ever (and probably ever will) experienced in life. but the later gears since the tires stayed down I wanted more power...
Im sure that YZ500 will keep me happy though. as long as it doesnt kill me. think 900 bucks is a good deal for a 1988 YZ500 that runs good.

ya thats a great deal sine they dont change the motor in the 500's its mostly all the same stuff as the new ones, but its gonna be a heavy bike.
and trust me with the 500's you wont need more power right away. the bikes are scary fast and talk about popping up in 5thgear without any clutch, just rip the throttle and the tires in the air, most of the time without you wanting it too be.
i passed my friends 400ex in a wheelie by mistake. we have to drive this dirt road about 1/2 mile to get to a trail and he was topped out. i hit the throttle passed him the bike lifted up on me and i scared myself. he said it was so cool, i played it off ike i wanted too do it. shhhhh dont tell him

well the thing about the 500 is that, well you always have way too much power at your finger tips. i love it but alot of my friends, alot of people bigger than me dont like it. they think its too much. i weigh in at 175-185 and my friends who are 240-260 drive 250 2 strokes.
i know it sounds funny but your 500 will accelorate just like your street bike. only thing is the 500 will top out at 80 and your street bike will top out at 180

have you ever heard of super motard raceing? its street tires on big cc dirtbikes. then you race on a track that has street high speed corners and dirt jumps. its one of the coolest things going.

and for the record, i used to have really tall gears in my cr500. the bike easily went over 100. i switched them out because i didnt want to died that quickly.
so put a sproket with two extra teeth on your engine and see what happens

The blaster is really very fast and quick. Well, Yamaha is one of the top producers of motorcycle that has obtained tremendous reliability with its outstanding range of machines. Anyway, I really like this Yamaha Blaster and thinking to get it very soon.
