Thought I was a wimp for looking for help instead of just poking around, but after some searching I see it's a common problem.
Trying to replace the rear 5.25 inch speakers in a 1991 Corolla. I can pry the grill off, but the speaker enclosures appears to be firmly attached to the rear deck; I can see the ends of mounting screws from underneath but no access to the screw heads from above.
I suspect that I must take out the rear deck to get to the screw heads, but I've learned from painful experience not to just start prying unless there is no other option. Anyone out there have any hints?
Thanks for any help,
David

i did this in my 90 corolla. there are tabs on the rear seat bottom that pop out and then pull up on the back seat and then you can take the rear deck out and then you will be able to access the speacker bolts.

well, after you take off the tabs on the rear deck, you also have to pry off the 3rd brake light cover. You then have to take off the bolts that secure the rear seatbelts because the rear deck is held in place by the rear side panels that flank the seatbelts. If you are successful in taking off those bolts, you can then remove the rear deck. The speakers are top mount if you didn't know and I think they only have a certain clearance before hitting the grilles on the rear deck. I was only able to take off the bolt of the left side, so I was lucky enough to pivot the rear deck high enough to unscrew both speakers. I did the same procedure when sticking Dynamat around the speakers when I noticed lots of rattling near the sheet metal.
I'm just wondering if it's true if you can put 6 1/2" speakers instead of the 5 1/4". If it's not, I might just get 6x9 boxes with speakers and mount them with velcro in the trunk.

i replaced my stock rears with 6 1/2" you have to make your own mounting brackets for them though. mine were just cut out of wood.

How did you surround them?? did you use foam speaker baffles or perhaps surround them with Dynamat??
