What's a fast/cheap way to add HP to my Civic?

I drive a '93 Civic EX Vtec. It's a B16 (1.6L) with..I believe 160hp.
It's fast, but i want more power! I was thinking about cold air intake, or even a chip.
Anyone have any suggestions to quickly, easily, and a CHEAP way to add a few horsepower?
If you have some suggestions please tell me how it would work and a cost range. Thanks alot.

The 93 EX didn't come with the B16 from the factory, they came with the D16Z6, I think. Either you're mistaken about the engine, or you bought it with the engine already swapped in, in which case, sweet.
Anyway, most people start out with the basic intake/header/exhaust combo. of the three, the intake is going to be the least expensive. If you go with an intake from eBay and get a K&N filter for it, you can save some cash over getting a name brand intake, like AEM or Injen.

Did you buy the car with the engine already in it, or did you swap it in after you bought it?

I bought it from a guy who buys cars at auctions and resells them.
He said it was just a Civic EX. But when I went to get a new starter, the mechanic told me it was a 1.6L B16....because first he tried a starter that fit the 1.5L...which is the regular Civic.
So then my friend who has a 93 Civic Ex (not vtec) drove it..he said its definitely got more power than his.
So I'm assuming the guy who sold it to me didn't know that the original owner swapped in a B16.

Your mechanic should have seen that it was a B16 in the first place and not even bothered with the 1.5 starter.
Go out to your car and look at your engine. Does it say DOHC VTEC on the valve cover? Look on the engine block on the left side, there should be a spot where the engine code is. THAT is what engine you have.

I've got news for you and your friend: ALL EX's came with VTEC from the factory.

No..not all 93 Civic EX's came with VTEC from the factory...all EX Coupes came with VTEC.
His is classified as a sedan. A 1.5L non VTEC engine.
Edit: And yes the case says DOHC VTEC. But it doesn't look how the newer ones do.

I didn't think that any 92-93 civic or del sols came with VTEC of any kind...I may be wrong.
Anyways, My mechanic told me that your mechanic is stupid and that it seems that you don't know what the hell your talking about.....I may be wrong.
92-95 Civics either come with....
Coupe:LX 1.5 SOHC Non-VTEC
DX 1.5 SOHC Non-VTEC
EX 1.6 SOHC VTEC and I think but not sure 92-93 1.6 SOHC Non- VTEC
Hatchback: CX and VX 1.5 SOHC Non-VTEC
Si 1.6 SOHC VTEC
I may be wrong again, correct me if I am. :2cents:

All EX's have VTEC engines. The only ones that didn't are the 4th gen EX's which didn't come with VTEC.

Back to the orginal question. There is really only 1 cheap way too add noticeable power, that would be nitrous. $500 for a true 50HP or $1000 on a intake, header, exhaust and only gain 20HP - if that much.
Look at the engine block, under distrib. & next to transmission - there is an engine code stamped.

exhaust, headers and cold air intake are the only way to go. Putting nitrous in a stock car would just be stupid, you'd fry your engine on your first run, well maybe second run if you're lucky. I definetely would advise you to go with the exhaust, headers and CAI. They'll give you a huge boost in hp for the price whilst and at the same time make your car sound better than ever.

not if you're smart and don't use like a 100+ shot jet on a stock engine. There are 35, 50, 65, 75 shot jets that you can use. My friend has been using a 75 shot zex kit on his GSR for about 6 months without a single problem

Totally off topic... Kinked210 if you got that 93 civic for cheap and the seller didn't know there was a B16 in it I am SO JEALOUS.
With that B16, you can think of it this way: you already got like 40 HP for FREE with that B16. There are many of us dreaming of saving $4000 to do a B swap.

ZC is non VTEC. There are other differences besides one being DOHC and the other being SOHC, but that is the main difference

ZC came in JDM only. What they actually came from is a mystery, I think. Every time I see/hear something about the SOHC ZC it seems to be different. From what I understand Del Slow/teg is the main donor, there are also a couple version with different HP ratings. I do know the brown valve covered one is a POS. I swapped a SOHC ZC in my car when I first got it. Was there a noticeable differene? Hell yea, the orginal engine was seized.
