uhm... i noticed this once before but didnt pay any mind to it as i didnt think it was coming from my car, but in the last month i've noticed several times that there is a "rotten egg" smell coming from my car.

the oil isnt old. and i notice it mainly when i have the a/c or heat on, and when i really work the engine...

anyone else notice this smell? lol, whats goin on?

Have you had the a/c checked lately?.
Was told by my dealer that you should have the a/c going at least once a week to let it circulate, even in winter, and to have it re-gassed now and then.

Hope this helps a bit.

Leaking coolant can also cause that smell when it evaporates off a hot surface ..check for coolant leaks

That's the sign of a faulty alternator.

If your alternator happens to be over-charging your battery, you could get the same symptom (egg odor).

Next time you notice the odor, pop your hood and do a visual check of your battery. An over-charged battery would look a bit swollen, you may even notice some gas escaping from under the cell cover/cap things.

This sounds like it could be a cause of your problem. Get it fixed soon . . . whatever it is.

Rotten eggs are VERY uncool . . .

my car has been doin the same thing. i have heard that it may be the catayltic converter but im not sure. mines usually smells after i have been driving fast or jus accelerating fast

i_rebel

That's true. Catalytic converters get funky when they go bad too. A 2001 shouldn't have a bad cat tho'. The catalytic conv. is designed to work for the life of the car I believe.

Doesn't hurt to check . . .

Hurry up Boogie . . . I can smell you across the Verrazano . . . lol!

skylineskillall, yep same here... under hard acceleration i notice it, if i have the heat or a/c on i guess it brings in the smell... i mean its faint, but i smell it. i've noticed it outside the car too though

I replaced the cat, and the exhaust. There is also a post here (http://laf.cioe.com/~benbobbo/NonCGI/Forum5/HTML/000127.html) about someone with a 01' Sentra SE that has a similar problem.

WHY DO I SOMETIMES SMELL SULFUR NEAR MY CAR?

If you notice a sulfur or rotten egg odor while operating you vehicle, the odor most likely is cause by excessive amount of sulfur in the gasoline itself. This smell, when it occurs, is usually a combustion by-product in your vehicle's exhaust system which does not affect vehicle performance or emission.

Hope this helps

In New Zealand we can just chop the CATS out of the exhaust system! That solves the problem! Just a 3inch pipe straight from the engine!:evillaugh

There can be many causes for a Sulfur (Rotten Egg) smell to occur.

1) Too much sulfur in the gas (this is pretty unlikely because the EPA has its head up the oil companies asses all the time)

2) Unburnt fuel entering the catalytic converter (this can be caused by a bad spark plug, intermitant firing of a cylinder, or bad engine timing [this is usually caused by a very stretched timing chain) <---- this is probably the case ( a spark plug that is)

3) Bad Catalytic Converter (a bad CAT ain't good, because cats are designed to server for the life of the car. For a catalytic converter to go bad there must be something wrong with the engine [these can be; unburnt fuel entering cat, engine oil entering the cat, sodium entering the cat {this is caused by a coolent leak into the combustion area}])

It's the cat. It farted.

Seriously, it's the cat, but it does not mean the cat is bad. This happens from time to time.

I've heard it's from sulphur in gasoline. Maybe. But it usually occurs when the car has been under heavy load. Ever been behind a car on the freeway that is hoofing it and you smell it?

There is nothing wrong with your cat. You youngins have it easy. Cats generally don't smell anymore. My first job was at a gas station when cats were first installed on cars. God some of them stunk.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY CAR. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT THE COVERTER WAS FINE, THEY SAID ITS CAUSED BY THE TYPE OF GAS I USE. HE TOLD ME THAT SOME TYPES HAVE A HIGHER SULER RATE AND THATS THE CAUSE OF THAT SMELL, HE TOLD ME TO USE AMACOO GAS. HOWEVER I STILL DONT THINK THIS SHOULD BE HAPPENING, ITS HORRIBLE.

hi guys, yah like yours, my G20 has a terrible sulfer smell coming from the exhaust sometimes. I noticed that if I used the same gas from the same gas station all the time, the smell is reduced. it was when I switched brands that the smell would become stronger. I've been using Amoco regular gas the last 3-4 weeks at the same station and the smell had reduced significantly. :D

there is another issue with the A/C too. it seems like if I leave the AC off for a few days and turn it back on, there is a faint smell in the air. I set it so that the air circulates inside the car, but it still has that smell...it's not the exhaust. after about an hour or so usage, the smell dissappears.

man, this is another one of those G20 things that turns me off from buying another nissan. :(

I too had this problem last year. The air from the vents, with either the AC or Heat on, smelled liked rotten eggs about 2-3X a week. The exhaust would flare up once in a while too. I got fed up and went to complain to the dealer in February, they then proceeded to do a "procedure", which I have no clue to what, but this did nothing. They called me back in March and said they got a bulletin/update and told me to come in and they would fix it. Since then, I haven't had a problem since. They also told me some crap that they build the car to deal with california emissions laws and in the Northeast, the sulfur content is not as low in california, so thats why it smells. I now stick to one type of gas, Exxon, and it works for me. It was horrible for those four or five months....

thanx bud. :D btw, my P11's in Illinois...

Doh I couldn't find my second receipt for the procedure in March. I found on my first receipt in February that it stated, "tried to apply Bulitten ITB00-026A" they characterized it as Misc-Engine Mechanical -A0001 work. I'll look a bit more for the second receipt. I hope this helps. I have talked to other people in new york with g's, and I know they have had similiar problems and complained to the dealer. So new york dealers should be well aware of problem.
