Chip mod??

Does anyone know if the "Speed chips" (supposedly tell your ECU the air is colder to get more fuel injected) are worth the money? I see them brag up to 20 hp boost and am a little suspicious of that stat.

Also wouldn't a cold air intake negate the effects of it since it really brings the air to a colder temperature or can they both work together?

the chips effectively add more fuel and advance the timing. they do this regardless of your having a CAI or stock intake. Yes, they can add up to 20 HP depending on the application.
If I were you, I would advance the timing myself, and adjust the fuel pressure and be on my merry way, all the while while saving the money you would have otherwise spent.
what type of car is it?

It's a saturn SC2. The only reason I questioned was because wouldnt the CAI already increase my fuel pressure by making the air colder? If the lowest ratio I could have was like 13:1(not sure about that number for my car) then the chip could no longer force more fuel in.?

How could I adjust the fuel pressure by myself? Would I get the same amount of hp without the chip?

well, to adjust the fuel pressure, you need to locate the fuel pressure regulator. It is usually near the fuel rail, and may or may not be adjustable, depending on your car. The CAI will increase the fuel pressure, but not a substantial amount. you can still gain a few HP by adjusting it manually, although without a dyno, it is difficuly to adjust it to it's full potential.
the timing should be set to 1-2 degrees shy of detonation. mine is set at around 13 degrees of advance, I don't know about your car.
do you have a DIS or a distributor?

engine chips and cai's work great together. the chip changes your fuel and spark maps, and won't intefere with your cai. some chip companies can custom the chip to get even more gain if they know you have a cai.

Increasing the fuel pressure is only going to richen your fuel mixture and will reduce power with the stock ECU.

Also adding a CAI will allow more air to the engine, it will not increase fuel pressure. It simply allows more air to enter the intake manifold at a colder temp than the factory airbox.

Most NA cars are set to run a little on the "rich side" because it prolongs engine life and allows for a bit smoother engine operation and the timing has been backed off a few degrees to prevent detonation, or pinging.

What these "chips" usually do is lean your car out a tad, and advance your timing a degree or two for optimal performance.

Of course this a VERY broad generalization and all cars are different but that's the general idea behind them.

Now, if you are interested in getting a chip, or a reprogrammed ECU then I would personally talk to the manufacturer and tell them not only what you have done to the car, but what you are planning to do in the near future because modding the intake/exhaust or fuel system can detriment performance if your ECU is not set up for your bolt-ons. I personally would never buy an ECU or chip that wasn't tailored for my car but ultimately the choice is up to you.

Good luck to you!

he did one of these installs for a cheap ebay chip... it's on there, see what happened.

if the chip isn't from a noted name, don't get it.

also...
a chip is not going to "fool" your computer. if you've got a chip that's fooling your computer, don't use it.

a chip is designed to recalibrate your fuel/timing maps, not "fool" your ecu.

So your saying that SOME chips are bad,and SOME good. What about a chip from jet? http://www.jetchip.com/

I might buy one of these in the near future.Wanna make sure.

companies such as JET and Hypertech, and other REAL companies that make chips are no problem.
i've got a JET chip in my truck, and it's great...
