I bot my 8 on 11.10.03 and first week started to see green guey stuff on garage floor. Called the dealer they said its just overflow from coolant resivior. So didnt think much of it then, until 2 weeks later more green stuff was on floor, called the service guy and he said first few weeks this could happen may be the coolant was overfilled and in a few days if it keeps up bring it in. Then last week coolant light came on. Took the car in and they added fluid, they said it was low. Told me to bring it back 3 days later for service. Took it in on Tuesday and they called me later that day and said it needed an engine replacement because it was leaking from the 2nd rotor and engine housing or something like that. I only have 1200 exact miles on it and I can't believe this is happening to me. No mods or nada that I did to the car, I dont even drive it hard, I bought it cuz I loved how it looks. I asked the dealer if I can just get into a new 8, I didnt pay 35k for a new RX8 body with a remanufactured engine. They told me they cant get me a new engine and there is no way I they will get me into a new RX8. This is the best they can do for me. Dealer is Lithia Mazda in Fresno, CA. This is so unfair, I dont have any ideas on what to do or what I can do. Please any help or advice would be great right now before they finish with my car. The only way I would be satisfied is to get me into a new 8 or put a new engine in my car. I am suspecting that the dealer knew of the leak and still sold me the car anyways. Thats why they kept telling me its just the coolant overflow until a few weeks later. I shouldnt have to pay such a price for a broken car from the beginning. Please help if anyone here can.

If it only has 1200 miles on it, I'd demand a new car... You should get ahold of the local mazda rep.

BTW, "bot" is spelled bought and "guey" is gooey... :)

Make ME wonder. I bought my RX-8 at Lithia in Fresno. But knock on woodgrain I haven't had ANY problems with my RX-8. That's too bad for your car...I would think you should get a WHOLE new car if they can't get you an engine???

Its in my signature. If you dont like it too bad. And my car is cool, WAY faster than your RX-8, and AWD. I admit the RX-8 is a beautiful car, I had a deposit on one for over a year, but got sick of waiting for it to come out so I bought the WRX. And I'm not a "GUY".

VTLC; Sorry to hear about your engine problem.
I know where you are coming from. A few years ago I purchased a new Dodge ram, after about 1500 miles, and 5 trips to the dealer. They told me that to fix a problem with the heater not working properly that they were going to have to replace the engine. something to do with the water passages in the block. Anyway after much shouting and screaming, at every one from Chrysler to the dealer, They got me another truck. I had to pay about $600 for the milage deduction on the old truck, but at least I got a new truck, and not a new truck with a replacement engine...... Don't give up!

Perhaps a remanufacutred engine is the better route.. more likely than not, they'll have fixed whatever went wrong with the current engine, and modified it so it won't happen again. Here's to hoping.

So what exactly is properly testing an engine? They've been testing it since 1995...

I seriously doubt you beat a wrx in your slow ass automatic rx-8, the guy probably wasnt even racing you. If you dont like how my car looks, too bad, its still faster than yours.

Why is it that 90% of the replies on any one site are from people who niether own the vehicle in question nor are they truly objective. A forum is to discuss problems, you may only see problems there. It doesn't mean the car is "BAD".

"seriously doubt" and "slow ass"? Do you back those staements up? Road and track put this RX8 up against the 400hp Mustang. Guess what the RX8 was right there with that muscle car at the end of the road race. There is something to be said for nearly perfect balance, high lateral "G's" and light weight. Horse power isn't everything. Granted the WRX is half a second quicker to 60 but I'd like to see it put the RX8 to shame as you indicate.

In the early sixties Jaguar beat Ferrari and all the others with superior road holding and braking. So lets get off the 0 to 60 and HP ratings and talk about real performance, please.

OK here is what happended since the engine replacement. I thought with the engine replace my problems with the car would end, but was I in for a surprise. I have 8000 miles on my 8 now and it has been in the shop for aleast 6 or 7 times after with about 30 days accumed in service including the 2 weeks for the engine replacement. Problems range from AC issues to broken glove box and now rough idles. Sitting in the car you can actually feel the car shake ever 3 to 5 seconds because of a cough like sound comming from the tail pipes. Outside the car you can see the car shake and hear the burp or cough sound clearly. My car also has a ticking sound from the engine like a knok but it is slight. I am told all this is normal, honestly if all this were normal I WOULD NEVER even consider buying this car. I just had my rearview mirror replaced today for intermittent auto dimming and rattling issues, at Selma Mazda because I lost all confidence at my local Mazda dealer in Fresno, CA (Lithia Mazda). Watch out for more problems if you take your car to this dealership for service. I am fed up now with my 8 and its many problems. I have looked into the CA Lemon law and understand little, If anyone here has any advice on Lawyers or plans of actions please reply, I need your advice and help.

I am a proud owner of an RX8 but my car is a disappointment.

If it were me I would find a local tuner who has knowledge of working on older Mazda Rx-7's. There are a lot of guys (and gals) out there that have in depth knowledge of rotary engines (more so than the dealers). They may be better apt at troublehooting poor idle and overheating issues. You may want to try some of the folks at http://www.rx8club.com or http:www.rx7club.com for help.

The fit and trim issues are another story- that crud should be fixed by the dealer bozo's.

Just an FYI- Overheating a rotary engine = certain death. When that puddle of coolant appeared- I would have had the delaer tow that baby in.

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/iamwithstupid.gif Hes got the right idea... 9 times out of 10 the dealer is the worst place to go. Check the forums online first. There are some VERY smart ppl out there, you just gotta find them.

That sucks! I can tell you that not all RX8's are the same as I've had mine for 6 months now and absolutly nothing has gone wrong.

This website has good info on it for your state. In any case do something before 18 moths or 18,000 miles. Thats when your rights turn into a pumpkin.

why pay 10-15k$ for an engine when you can do the same power with a 13b without spending that much.

+ the 3 rotor will fuck up the cars balance.

if its not to go in the 600hp range (or 300 n/a), 3 rotors is a dumb choice

Hi,
We have a 2004 RX-8 and it is in the shop again, for a THIRD engine replacement. We had two engines replaced before the car had 4000 miles on it. We can't take advantage of the Lemon law in Michigan until the fourth repair! We are super frustrated. We want to get rid of the car, and we are thinking of calling a lawyer to see if there are other options.
Good luck with your car.
