Automatic Shift Indicator

I have a 1984 GMC S-15 truck with automatic transmission. I was told the GMC S15 is the same as the Chevy S10 truck.
When I move the shift from PARK-REVERSE-NEUTRAL-DRIVE-DRIVE2
the indicator doesnt move. I can change through the different gears
but the indicator stays put. This isnt a big problem but kind of a nuisance.
Does anyone know what the problem is and what fixing it would entail?
Thanks for any help.

HI there? I also have an 84 GMC S-15 but its a Jimmy (Blazer). My problem with the indicator is that I don't know where it is? Where is yours mounted? Is it in the instrument cluster? I suspect its in the instrument cluster but have not found it yet because it doesn't work.
Once I can find mine, I'll try to give you some info on your problem if I can,
Thanks

the indicator is mounted in the dash with either a direct pin to the steering collum or has string with a pin, chances are the pin has broken off, to change you have to remove dash molds to get to the instriment cluster

Shift indicator locations vary, depends on which guage cluster you may have. If you can see the indicator, chances are the string came off or broke. If you can't find the indicator. someone may have changed the dash molds and covered it up. Pull the dash mold off and check behind it.

The reason your indicator doesn't move is 1 of 3 things
The indicator gearing/spring is broken
The wire loop that connects it to the shifting cowl is broken
The wire just slipped off...
Check those..

maybe a common problem with age ... my 83 s10 blzr auto sometimes doean't move but snaps over little later ... no biggy since levers to tranny do change gears. had to adjust those at tranny to get better aligmnet since they wear out. not worried about indicator.

I Have An 84 S10 And I Just Recently Replaced The Gear Indicator String.it Took Me Longer To Take The Molding Off Than It Did To Put The Part In. I Had To Basically Pull Off All The Covers For The Instrument Cluster, Then Put A Little String Through The Hole For The Indicator Cord, Then Pull The Cord Through The Hole And Attach It. Took Me About 1/2 Hour, All Told.
