Sounds like your friend wasted his money on those mods. My 98 isnt the fastest thing off the line but it does have top end. The A4 is a tank when it come to weight, 3200lbs, thats why its slow off the line asshole. Now if i really wanted to race ppl i wouldnt of bought the A4, ppl buy it b/c of top end plus the fine interior package included with the car.

Apparently you haven't realized an A4 isn't meant to be a race car. It's not a F&F street race car. My car isn't the fastest thing on the block and I don't expect it to be. However, it is probably the nicest. Not everyone that buys a car is looking for balls to the wall speed. I for one could give a sh*t if I can beat a 93 civic because at the end of the day...the other guy is still driving just a civic.

If you want the power to back it up, then look into an S4. These bi-turbo beasts def have the backing that you need plus it has all of the interior features of an A4.. No to mention the new 2004 S4 which is a V8, I'd like to say WHOA to that. :bananasmi

Most production cars are not made to race, even the S2000 ( my other car) isn't made for racing, well ok maybe it is, but it's just as much a daily driver.. If cars were meant to be raced they would be sold already race prepped... I didn't get the A4 to race, I got mine because it's a nice 4 door, with a little luxury.. No reason to bash the A4, or any car for that matter, each car is made the way it is for a reason, it's to target certain groups of people, and it just so happens that most of the people who drive an A4 could care less about mods.. We just happen to love them.!!!!

I agree to an extent. If your friend got beat by a 93 civic (assuming it was doin 14s) then thats your friends problem. Sounds to me like he doesn't know how to drive his car very well, especially after hearing you say the car doesn't launch for 'crap'. I've had a very different experience with this. If you take a look at the torque curve for a chipped 1.8T you can see very clearly that the power isn't delivered immediately, which is the case with most turbo cars.

-19" rims are exactly the best pick for a drag wheel...
-the a4 does have roughly 1000lbs extra weight then the civic does... and maybe about (someone can correct me if i'm wrong) an extra 50-60 crank hp to pull that 1000 lbs...
-the driver makes all the difference... for example..(far fetched but an example none the less)
a person who does not know how to drag race driving a lambo vs a seasoned driver in a respectable (off the top of my head) integra... the guy in the lambo would end up spinning the shit out of his tires, while the other guy is down the track...

The 1.8T engine is an engine with 24 years in the making. It is one of the best engines available today. It houses much more potential than stock.

And as for slow goes. A stock Civic DX's are SLOW AS HELL, i can beat one with a 1979 Dodge Omni. A A4 with a few BOLT ON goodies and your up to 330HPs respectively (APR Stage III for example). Remember this is all bolt ons and with all the engine internals stock. I'd like to see a stock civic engine put out 300 hps without blowing up...

And as for applications with internal engine mods go... 400+ reliable hps are possible.

Hmm as of right now, audi has probably the best build quality. Mercedes has gone down lately due to them cutting costs :( BMW has excellent engine and structural quality, but their interiors arent as good as audis.

HAHA i agree. I have a 99 Audi 1.8TQ and i have no mods done to it and i could give a dave my car is better than a civic anyday. Civic/Accords/Integras/Eclipse are all ugly POS.

I would say its your friends driving thats slowing down the A4. The Audi 1.8T is not the best street racing car but its not a bad pick. Their are tons of fast A4s and the 1.8T motor is awsome. So the audi A4 does not suck at all. By just adding a chip you can get over 200hp! So just tell your friend to practice a little more and trust me, his times will do down a good 2sec or more. With his mods he should be in the 14's

I have to add to this “debate” I’m here looking for information about R5 A4s as I’m researching for a new car purchase. I have a lot of knowledge of cars and research them incessantly it’s my addiction.

I have to disagree with you bashing the Mazda 6, it’s a great car with a next generation version of the Ford Duratec v6 and is easily the equal to Audi’s v6. It has been on the top ten engine list for several years. The platform is completely new and will be used for many Ford, Mazda, and Volvo cars. It is one of the best handling FWD v6 cars available.

Now I don’t want a Transverse v6 FWD car so I’m here looking at Audi’s I do think the A4 has many nice features and better interior quality then the Mazda and this is also something I’m looking for. I think the Audi is a superior car but I will not dis the Mazda 6 as it is a great car in it’s own right.

We also don’t know that he drives a Mazda 6, I think he is here looking for the fight you all gave to him. I do think that his friend needs to learn to drive his A4. It is in a completely deferent league then a civic. Where talking luxury European performance vs. Japanese econobox.

True that sergeo. I used to own a 1986 Mercedes 300E and it feeled every bit as solid as my current A4. Germans make some fine automobiles and was just in europe on vacation, people over there would definately pick a bmw or an audi becuase of the driving style, twisty roads, and severe weather conditions (audi quattro).

The A4 is an awsome car, it's just not a drag car. With AWD the traction is great, but you can't get the wheel spin off the line in order to maintain higher RPM's in first gear(unless your goal is to trash the car). Also, there is a loss of horsepower due to the fact that it is AWD. The engine just has to work harder putting power to all wheels. I wet weather or snow, like Indiana, Quattro will destroy any POS civic and maintain it's investment much longer.

If you compare the dyno graphs of a 4 cyl turboed Honda you can see that they make their peak torque only after 4-5k rpms. The 1.8T STOCK makes its peak torque at just 1950rpms. Leaving you in the dust while you are changing gears trying to keep the rpms up...

the car isn't the thing to be bashing here fellas. honda makes some of the best cars on the road (in terms of reliability, quality and value). luxury, features, driving dynamics, and the prestige factors aren't part of honda's formula. so comparing an audi a4 to a civic doesn't make a whole lotta sense.

so if it's not the car you should be bashing (you really shouldn't be bashing anyone/thing at all), it's the kids that drive them. the kids that think they own the road and think that VTEC is god's answer to all the world's problems. the kids with the big egos and with even bigger mouths.

sux that everyone thinks that anyone who drives a honda fits this stereotype but that's not true at all. there are quite a bit of honda enthusiasts that know their shit and are in this for the right reason.

civics, the cars themselves, make for great commuter/daily driver cars to go back and forth to work with or to just run some errands. but common sense will tell you that if you want to drive in style, to impress, there are better cars for that purpose, such as an audi a4.

im gonna be honest, we just turned in our a6 2.7t to the audi dealership for service today, my dad let me drive around the a4 1.8t loaner they gave us for the day. it had 2k miles, but that think fckin held the road like a beast, ive never seen anything like it. On the other hand, it did NOT have much acceleration, actually i also drove my grandma's '00 civic EX today and i think that could probly take the audi til the middle of 2nd gear. but a whole quarter? ridonculus.


Also it is pretty amazin u can get up to 60 on the a4 in 2nd gear, and only be halfway to the redline. u really have to be a complete moron to fudge that

I dont think there are any chips out there for the 96-97 12v's... even if there were, they're not gonna do much good. chips can really only draw real power from boosted engines.

If you have a 30V 2.8 i think you can get a chip from GIAC

i dont know about the mods avalaible but A4 1.8t cars are suprisingly slow. I worked at audi last year and I drove the 1.8 t, 2.7t, 3.0, 4.2
and the 1.8t was extremely slow for a car in its class. Any mazda 6 can take the A4. I know the car looks very elegant and cool/sporty. Its a real pretty car, but not for performance. I know that A4s pick up really slow and after a while they start to go, but most races in streets take seconds and A4 just dont have it. Also vW 2.0 jettas and golfs are slow too, these are the older models of VW and they now use 1.8ts too i think. But I would not get these types for racing. In Audis and VW's I like the 6 cylinder 2.8 that they had in 1998 models, thats the car I wouldnt mind working on.

well i have had a little time to get under the hood of my a4 and now its got a neuspeed chip 3" custom exhaus a kn filter. nothing major but it has a little kick. So every once in a while i go pretend to wanna trade my car in just so i can get a few test drives outta it

i tried out a brand new civic si and i can say it isnt competition. Now think of this i put a total of maybe 900 dollars worth of upgrades in my car and its hanging around 230 hp and 270 some torque(*neuspeed rules :loser: )

Now realstically speaking, with 900 dollars how much better can u make a civic, and just for the sake of argument the brand new si. people have got to understand that a civic and an a4 are two ver diffrent cars. the civic was designed as an economy car and is in no way built to handle the stress of high speed racing. Peple tune them because parts are cheap and bodykists are all over the palce.

Now and a4 even like mine 150 hp stock take the governor off and sl;ap some z rated tires on that sucker and you have a top speed of 150 some

That said, one guy said he ripped the govenor out of his A4, this is illegal right? is it hard to do? can the cops find out you have ripped it out if they pull you over? what kind of risk satisfaction ratio are we talkin about here.

well my governor went gone when i got the neuspeed p chip for my ecu, i have never really tested the limits since my tires arent z rated or nething like that but ussually those ecu upgrades remove the governor and it hard to detect since they woul dhave to check the program on your ecu .

as for what the guy sed bout the horse power, he prolly knows better but i was meaning flywheel power and i still sthink its more afterall my exhaust is not just cat back its got the downpipe and such and the pipes are 3" most of the way so i stil think i put at least 200 to the ground audi tranny has only 8 percent loss of power(that is a fact) and the quattro takes some away too. neverthe less one of these days il dyno it and i will see than.
