Hello,
I am not an expert on this topic but just wanted to get your views and thoughts.

I have noticed that during the 80s and 90s the one single constant in this situation (mid east process) has always been Arafat. Israel has had different Ministers, the US different Presidents. I mention the US because it seems we are always heading up the peace process.

So what is the problem here, perhaps it is the fact that Arafat as always been the leader. I think his week leadership is the main problem. I know there are many other factors.

Your thoughts and knowledge

Thx
Alfred

Israel seems to think Arafat is part of the problem too.

Israel's actions like the Jenin Massacre are a problem as well.

Yes, but isn't the bombing of buses in Jerusalem with children on board just as much of a problem? Or what about bombing a nightclub?

I am not defending Israel, nor condemning Palestine, but Israel retaliates for a Palestinian bombing, and then Palestine retaliates for Israel's retaliation, it's a viscious circle that will never end unless you get a leader in Palestine who will take control. Do you think Arafat is anything more than a figure-head?

I think Arafat can't stay in power if peace breaks out over there. He's to beholding to the radical groups to truely put the clamps on them.

So no matter how much talk is done about stopping the violence, until someone can actually stop those groups from acting there is no chance for talks to do any good. If it spirals out of control (as both sides seem to be promoting) then there is going to be a bloodbath of horrific proportions over there.

Oh yeah, I think Arafat is an obstacle for peace. When he speaks English he condemns the terrorists, and then glorifies the terrorists in his Arabic speeches. But even if he is taken out, his replacement will either be sympathetic to the terrorists or be assassinated.
What do you mean by "anything more than a figure head"?

Why he 'controls' Palestine, does he really control what is going on?
He is a name everyone knows, somewhat like Nelson Mandela is in South Africa.

Hamas is claiming responsibility for the attacks on Israel, Arafat has no control over them regardless.

I should add I lived in South Africa until 2 years ago so I know what I am talking about with N.M

To even begin to understand the current situation regarding Israel, one has to read up on the history of that embattled area. Barring that, only two things need to be learned...

1) The Palestinian extremists are not interested in creating a new nation. They are most interested in destroying the current Jewish state that exists in their adopted religious homeland. Anyone who disagrees with this is ignoring the facts of the situation. Palestinians could have their own nation within a few weeks to months should they really band together and demand recognition.

2) Israeli leadership and it's chaotic history over the last 50 years goes a long way to fueling the current situation. They've had leaders who've been ready to deal with their attackers, yet others who instead support Jewish settlements in occupied territory. Part of the problem is one of inconsistency; in order for the Arab world to deal with Israel they must adopt policies that last longer than the term of a single Prime Minister. In this person's opinion, failure to do so has in large part perpetuated the confusion already present throughout the region. You aren't going to make Jews and Muslims agree about the Holy Land monuments or who has first dibs, but given a reliable approach you can come to eventual compromise. Without either reliable standpoints or policy though, you end up with a cycle of violence sure to only lead to almost immeasurable destruction.
