Thoughts About The "US Scene"

-Why is it always someone from Cali who tells you not to be a hater, and then tells you you're a: fag/poser/non-real dorifto master because "Ive never seen you at events". How hard is it to grasp that not everyone lives in SoCal, much less a place where events are held. Welcome to the real world.
-Not enough people are experimenting with new ideas. Everything is S13s and AE86s with coilovers and engine swaps. Why not try and make a good spring/shock combo. Or weld your diff. People only wanna open up a mag and read an article that tells you how to set it up. Why cant you experiment with your own settings. Everyones driving style and preferences vary.
-Not enough people are using BMWs, RWD Euro cars, and domestics. I saw a 525 with an RB25. Knowing BMWs neutral handling blance, I can say that will be a killer combo. Trans Ams, Camaros, and especially Mustangs are dirt cheap(more so than an S-chassis or AE86) and companies like Hotchkis have been making track suspension parts for these cars for years. Or if you want something ready to roll, get a cop-car. Standard performance suspension, extra bracing, and LSD.
-FF drift is kinda like Santa Claus or the tooth fairy. Just like said fairly tails, you get an end result(in the Santa and Tooth Fairy case, money or presents, in the FF Drift case, an ass-drag), which tricks you into beliving in them.(Dont bother arguing: Everyone has their own opinions. I just thought this was a humourous analogy).
-Alot of these drift e-thugs who claim they can kick your ass in a battle cause they have an AE86 are really wusses in real life, and are terrible at drifting. They wont even look you in the eye after they talk shit to you on boards.
-Too many kids with AE86s around here are practising on country roads doing "time attacks"...wonder where they got that from. I know one kid is 1 year older than me and doesnt even have his Learners permit yet...
-After seeing the Hawaii drifters do there thang, I can safely say theyre waaay ahead of the mainland, in terms of set-up, driver skills, and there attitude towards "the scene".
-Im convinced spending money is the only way to succeed. Certain e-retailers who had no interest in drifting, and sold their crappy rice wares, are now going to all these events. Even PacificRim, who is a member of the crew that most SS writers are in is in on it! They had an auto S13 showcar they "race tuned" in 1 week, and hired a driver. They qualified for D1!! Im glad as hell they didnt win.
-In 5 years or less, Drifting as we know it, will be dead. Due to either a lack of interest, it being dismissed as a fad, the rising cost of parts etc., or a police crackdown. Many of these "hardcore drifters" who claim to be "drifters for life" will subsequently abandon the sport, for the new fad. VIP Cars. If you dont know what it is...well..its a JDM version of blang blang. But its cool, and it will be the next fad. That, or Vanning.
-I'm bored and have too much time on my hands

Just because you dont read it in magazines doesnt mean people dont do it. Yes, people do good spring/shock combo... people do weld their diff.

I dont know anyone like this... maybe you've been hanging out with the wrong croud. Most of the people i know are cool and dont trash talk each other even if you drive an FF, a civic, etc...

I've heard the otherside of this, several hawaiian drivers say the mainland guys are way ahead of things... hawaiian guys drive on the same course over and over and over... it would make sense for them to be really good on the same course... the mainland guys drive on different course styles everytime... so u figure out who's better. adaptability.

Yes, money is a factor. You will spend lots of it... but more in actually getting seat time and fixing stuff that breaks.

BMW's are heavy, ittakes more work to swing the ass end of one and remain consistent while keeping up a high exit speed.Hachi Rok's are real light, great for drifting, but their is a lot people don't understand about them. They see the drift king drive one, then they want one.It is a great car,but their 17 years old, which=work.A lot of parts are going to be going, you'll have to put in double what you paid for to keep the car running well.It is also UNDERPOWERED.Unless your going to perform an engine swap,or lots of engine mods, their won't be lots of speed.AE86's are good for downhill, why?Because that is the only situtation were an underpowered car can beat a faster car.But to do so takes REAL GOOD DRIVING SKILLS.I would just give all the hachi wannabesa copy of Drift Bible, maybe then they would learn something.

Probably going to die down due to too many close minded people who are unwilling to try and accept new ideas, turning it into a low profile, "backyard tinkerer's" hobby.

i change my statement above...
they ARE drifting corvettes, mustangs and camaros... so yeah, it is just a matter of time...
weight: remove stuff to lighten up the car, or just get better suspension to compensate for the weight.
power: there's always ways to add more power
suspension: there's almost suspension mods for any car out there...

The reason people from California think they know everything about the sport is because all of the events are held here on the mainland. With the exception of a few people most of the people that talk smack and say either poser or fag don't know anything about drifting. I'm from California near SF and there are a few people here that are into drifting that I know and don't talk shit. But people in SoCal think they know everything just because they've been to a Drift Showoff. My main point I'm tryin to make is that people from California aren't necisarrily correct on the subject of drifting, they'd just like to think so.

get a Bmw 2002 or 2002tii make that into a drift car. that will fix the lack of euro cars on the scene.
...and you thought the ae86 was too old and underpowered to drift.
...but somehow someone still finds out and gets good at it.

I'm planning a shock spring combo... why spend over $1000 on coilovers when you can get just about the same handling with shocks and spring for $400-600 and spend the extra on say a new clutch or something... I don't think people realize that drifting tears the crap out of your clutch...
one more thing, dorikin, your the man, I agree with just about everything you said, especially the wannabe FF "drifters" but I've gone over that many of times in other threads so I doubt I need to waste my time on it again... anyways good thread.
oh yea and screw engine swaps... why spend all that money on an engine when you could just rebuilt what you had so it was way more reliable and had extra money left over for say exhaust or suspension mods? people waste money just for a fad, makes me laugh and feel sorry for them at the same time

Yes, the kids will realize how much effort it takes to drive a car at it's limit and abandon their manual transmissions forever.
I predicted early on that either drifting would save U.S. car culture, or U.S. car culture would chew up/spit out drifting. I think we're on the chewing up end of things still, but the spitting out will come inevitably. The raging hungry mob that makes up the united states' population pretty much has their collective attention focused narrowly most of the time.
If the american people were a family seated together at a dinner table, they would all be looking at one dish: either the one that was being passed around, or the one that somebody was saying looked good/bad. This is why all of the sudden even people who didn't know who the hell Martha Stewart was a year ago suddenly feel like she is somebody worth throwing in jail. Drifting is the flavor of the month around here, America will probably have its cruel way with it and pass it on.
