I'm gonna "drift"

Not tryin to be a tool or anything, but am I the only one who thinks drifting is gonna go down the shit-hole because it was introduced in the U.S? Don't get me wrong, I love the drift thing, at one time I wanted to do it...until it started getting trendy. Then a bunch of wannabes wanna fix up thier cars and "drift".
Now... some people can hardly control a car thats in grip, what the fuck makes these wananbes think they can control it while it's sliding sideways????? It use to b about getting a cool balanced car and intentionally oversteering it and having enough skill to fix it and yet make it look smooth all at once...now people wanna get into it because they'll feel special if they're a "drifter" and they'll look cool sliding side-ways.
I'm sorry if I sound like I'm venting, it's just that one of the best things about the Japanese car culture is gonna go to crap because it's bieng introduced in the "all-hollywood", "you gotta have this to be cool", "my car is faster cuz it looks nice" land.
me:" how was the drift comp?"
friend: "about 30 dudes driftng on the track...... only 3 were capable of holding a drift"
me:"what the hell were the other 27 guys doin???"
friend: "pulling the handbrake immitating what they saw in a movie"
me: :eek7:

I dont personally care, drifting isn't THAT trendy yet, although it is gaining popularity. I can deal with a few bandwagon jumpers, I just dont want a ton of em. Plus, if they can't control a drift, they will crash and learn to stop trying to drift. Justice? I think so!

i'll say what i've always said: i don't care what the crowd is doing or what the latest trend is or what's "cool". i want to drift because it's fun, it takes skill, and i just like it. i don't give a rat's ass if i'll look "tyte" sliding my car sideways, and i don't care how much admiration i'll get for it. it's all about my enjoyment. i'm not going to let a little bit of popularity sway me from doing what i've wanted to do for years now (since before it was popular). if it's truly another american fad, it'll die down in a couple of years and only the true hardcores will be left.
as a rule of thumb: usually (not always, but alot of the time) if something get's big in another country, it will eventually, inevitabley, get big in the US for however long. think of Furby's, aluminum scooters, video games, Pokemon, beer, television shows etc. etc. drifting was so popular in Japan that it was pretty much inevitable that it would eventually get big over here.

He's right though, it's an inevitability. There's wannabe's in EVERYTHING. They come wanting in and you know it seems like almost everybody starts out a wannabe at one point or another. It's those people that care enough who actually end up knowing what they're doing. I think i confused myself but yea somebodys GOTTA know what I'm tryin 2 say...

I understand what your getting at cyprus.
Drifting is coming on too strong too hard and too fast for it's own good in North America all together. Soon enough there will be tons of people who wish to be real men and just do it side ways:wink:, much like all other fads. Though after it's been around long enough and many people have wrecked their cars, drifting will just fade to the back of everyones memory, like huge hit pop stars i.e. Ricky Martin, or that guy that sung Maccarena, and doesn anyone talk about Mambo # 5? When was the last time the Spice Girls Came up in a conversation? It didn't, did it?
If you ask me drifting coming in th north america as a fad is a blessing, north america has some true driving talent and if the right drivers get a hold of this talent (to drift) then one day we may have our very own drift king (not any time soon). Anyways, one the fad dies out, we'll be left with harcore drivers with natarual and built up talent. Just like people that still love and care for their Furby's;)

nobody gets any admiration from drifting.
Beyond all that... drifting will die out in america really fast, because no-one seems to have the balls. I hear a whole lot of talk, and dont see any action. The only drifting that goes on is in a giant parking lot... THAT my friends is not drift. IT is pussies in a parking lot. Fuck, my grandma probably drives faster through parking lots than most "drifters".
Autocross is not drift. Parking lots with cones isnt drift.
pretending to drift is the trend. Drifting is almost non existant.

Aside from that i hope you all really understand what i'm getting at, i pretty much covered it all in the last post.
I understand what you mean Kanto, when i see someone with their slicks and there sway bars and all that good stuff, they claim they can drift, when it's time for them to own up and prove they can what do they do? head for the biggest parking lot they can find and do some donuts. Hell i'm 15 driven a car no more than 15 times and can drift better than they can (i've driven on privatley owned courses). Duely noted i'm one shitty drifter, but never the less, it's almost like the civic fad, spending 2 grand on body work and paint and driving it around like they got a 5 grand engine. The fact is as the fad passes over us there will be nothing we can do but seperate the true drifters from the E-brake yankers.
But it will be an obvious difference, like the way you can tell a 200hp engine from a 120hp with cold air intake. There will be a difference that hardcores will note.

i mean i know nothing of drifting but when you first start out wouldnt you have to pull the ebrake at first to get the feel of controlling an out of control car. i mean what do you expect them to do just start using body wait transfer right from the start and just use every technique in the book and just own you on the called bluff. you gotta start somewhere. Maybe i am defending someone who is just a ricer but i am sure some ricers have dreams of drifting.

No man, no flames, I understand wehre you are coming from, but i will understand if they pull the e-brake, and tell me hey i haven't been drifting fora long time i just got the parts installed.
That i have no quarms with at all, in fact i support that because as you said Myrrdex, you have got to start somewhere.
I just hate those ricer wannabes, "yeah of course i can drift, it's so easy, uhh how do you do it again?"

You should correct them and point out that "Drift" and "parking" are not interchangeable words. Afterall the parking brake is there for parking, so everytime you use it - you must in fact be parking (as of yet I've found no owners manual that describes the "Drifting brake")
BTW, does anybody know what happens when you put peeps in the microwave?

Drifting won't hit that big in the US because it was originally intended to be done on the streets. In Japan it is known to be an art of road racing and there drifters hit the streets to show off, practice, and compete. Because of its enormous popularity it was included in official racing events. In the US there are too many street laws and a very efficient and strict police that impede the art of drifting to grow as it should.

NOT STRICT AND EASY LAWS?!?!? BWAHAHAHAHAHA
Sorry Tegus drifter but you couldn't have been further off, why do you think the crime rate is soo low in Japan. It's because of how effective their police are in enforcing the law.
Tho, when it comes to racing they often give some slack, as long as it doesn't efffect anyone outside of the race. Though typicly if they can stop you the will and this is how.
C:\My Documents\My Pictures\FD RX-7 Police.jpg
Try telling me again that our laws our too strict to allow drifting!
When was the last time you saw a US state trooper in an RX-7 FD?

Psssh. In Toronto our cops just drive around luxury cars (more room in the back for arrested folks)
THough they have these kick ass cruisers to hunt down street racers.
They are a NAvy blue and have no siren on the top, only when you are a 90 degree angle with it you can see all the police decals and such written on the side of the car in black, the blue and red flashing light thingys are on the insed of the car at the very top of the wind shield. And the barrier between the rear seat and the drivers are made from bullt prrof plastic/glass stuff or what ever, it's like 4 inches thick or sumtin.
They are kick ass, you have no idea they are cruisers till you get up close and at that 90 degree position. It was the coolset thing, once my cousin and I were driving around, we'll he was driving around i was riding shotgun. Then this car rolls by in front of us cutting us off as we are coming out of some driveway, he's about to cuss the guy, but as he comes closer the headlights flash on the car and then we see al the police decals in black, it was pretty cool. Also by the sound of the engine, it sounds pretty tuned, certainly not stock.

yeah i know what you mean about those cruisers with the ghost graphics its the grill gaurd or metal bumpers that give em away
for some reason every time i pass a cop going the other way they slam on their brakes... dont turn around just slam on the brakes... it always scares the shit outta me.

About the police in Japan, drifting is somewhat respected, but just about as respected as drag racing here, not the toughest of motorsports to some people, while to others the most challenging out there. Wanga on the other hand is very demanding of respect, not every day you see a Z-type or an NSX that flys by at 200+ mph.
That aside, Japan police do not "allow" drifting, it is just that it is not their at most concern. Since they take place in mountain passes, they don't effect many people besides the racers themselves. But just because they don't care too much doesn't mean they do nothing about it.They often run sting operations, and to prevent the motorsport completley they will try to hunt down popular areas for drifting and lay down rumble strips.
They are not just care free about it.
But i don't see how you veiw North American police any different. Our cops do not activeley hunt down drag racers, but if they get the chance to stop one they will. Also occasionaly they take down the big underground racers with sting operations. It is not all that much different.
I've heard that in Japan the police allow road races and drifting to run freely, I just don't think US authorities will be that permissive.

Drifting might flourish in America, but if accidents start occuring on a large scale, which might happen, the authorities would be forced into the position of having a strong campaign against road racing.

You should correct them and point out that "Drift" and "parking" are not interchangeable words. Afterall the parking brake is there for parking, so everytime you use it - you must in fact be parking (as of yet I've found no owners manual that describes the "Drifting brake")
"I'm on the road a lot, so I drive a lot of different rental cars. Often-times, I will be unfamiliar with a car, and I will accidentally drive around with the emergency brake on. Now, I know that doesn't say a lot for me, but what does that say about the EMERGENCY BRAKE! They should call it what it really is: thing that makes the car smell funny." --Mitch Hedberg

Who cares about originality if you're just doing what you like? Maybe I am naive in the fact that I am just a girl from Montana, where more people drive 1-ton diesels with their horsetrails in tow, but I don't really care who is into drifting around me, because it is simply something I love. For any people near me that don't really understand what it is, who use their e-brakes, or wreck their cars because they're trying to show off, I could care less as long as they don't hurt me. But, when you can drive from the center of town in any direction for 15 minutes and be in the absolute middle of no where, it is easy to go sideways down curvy roads and just be totally by yourself.
Whatever the rest of them do, that's just fine. Passing fads will fade away and all that will be left will be real passion for driving.

Very well put. Also i think everyone here will treat your views with respect, i don't think that you'll be considered naive or anything like that.
And Tegus drifter, i don't mean to have an argument with you or anything, but ofr god's sake the differences between Japanese underground racing and North American underground racing, is just that. One societey is in Japan one is in North America. That's it.

It is really a strange venture. The goal is not to beat any opponents to a finish line. It is about controlling a car past the normal limits. In a drift, the driver has to use all their ability in an attempt to keep their cars on the road. The sport predominantly involves taking turns at high speeds. The challenge lies in taking the turns sideways. Spinning the rear tires while balancing the clutch, brake, and handbrake is involved. A drifter can take a turn at a ninety-degree angle, power his way through it, and come out the other side perfectly. While not too popular in the US, it is very popular in Japan. Enthusiasts watch drifters for the thrill of the senses. Seeing this high-powered car do unconventional things while hearing the tires screech as the back end looses contact with the pavement is what the sport is all about. The Silvia is ideal for drifters. It is small, light, rear-wheel drive, and has an excellent weight distribution. The driver should beware though. Drifts put a great deal of stress on the car. The transmission takes a particular beating. Maintaining the car and driving properly is necessary. Athough still not popular in the US the comeback of rear-wheel drive cars should induce a newfound interest in this field. The more people interested, the better.
