2000 GT1 - Clicking noise while braking

Ok, this may be difficult to explain. As with most 2000's, at least that I've found, I been having front brake problems since early on. At this point, I have a clicking sound coming from the front of the car, at least I think it's coming from the front.

Details:

While the car is in park and the engine on, I can press down on the brake pedal and hear a creaking/clicking noise. I can repeatedly press down on the pedal and repeatedly hear the same noise. Initially, I thought that it might be a ball joint or wheel bearing, but with the car in park, this doesn't make sense.

I have been told by the dealership that the caliper sliders need to be replaced and that this is what is causing the noise. I have not yet simply attempted to regrease the sliders but I going to try and hopefully this stops the problem.

Anyway, what I'm asking: Has anyone heard of or experienced this problem? Does anyone have any insight into what may be causing the problem and how it can be fixed short of replacing the entire caliper?

My brother had a 99 Olds Alero and his car had the same problem. We tried applying more lubricant to the backing plate on the brake pads and this only worked for a short period of time, maybe a couple days, then the clicking noise returned. So putting more grease on it probably won't help out for too long.
As far as I could tell the problem is just cause by the caliper rubbing across the backing plate of the brake pad and the friction is maybe making it kinda hop across it which is what the clicking noise is, at least thats my guess. We didn't really attempt to fix it other than putting some grease on them, so I can't really tell you how to fix it, maybe do what the dealership said.

I have a 2000 grand am gt1, and i had the same problem! The dealership replaced the caliper (under extended warrenty) and the noise is gone!

First time using one of these message boards, but your brake problem caught my eye.

I have a 99 Grand Am GT 4 wheel Antilock disk brakes and I had the EXACT same thing happen to me after I took my brakes apart to paint my Calipers..

After I put everything back together, I noticed the reduced braking, and the creaking and clicking sounds you mention even if the car was sitting still.. to fix this I did two things.


1. The brake pads. Make sure the pad with the wear bar is on the inside of the rotor (even though it should be anyway) and it couldn't hurt to put a bit of that anti squeel lube on em.

2. The calipers When you take your caliper off, there are two bolts holding it on, which fit into rubber seals, I removed these seals, cleared the old lube out of of the bolt holes and when putting everything back together applied only enough lube to cover the bolts.


Once I put everything back together, workin' fine, as if there was never a problem at all.. and without any trips to those dealers.

PS: I don't think you have anything wrong with your brakes if that's what the dealer is telling you, and I'm sure you don't like visiting the dealer any more then I do.
