Should people be retested for their drivers license?

Based on this article – I think it supports my continuing “yes” answer.
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=578&ncid=578&e=4&u=/nm/20030717/ts_nm/crash_california_dc - Eight Killed as Elderly Driver Plows Into LA Market
I understand that people don’t want to be singled out for requirements more then anyone else. But the AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) has got to get over the fact that some of their members are no longer fit to drive. Sure there are others who need their license taken away, but the fact is that age does impair ones abilities in the same way youth prevents someone from being able to drive. A license received at the age of 16 should not be a lifetime one. Retesting at renewal over the age of 60 seems like a reasonable and sensible thing to do.

I'm not sure of the facts, but I believe that in the UK, once over a certain age, the elderly are required to pass certain requirements before they can renew their licence.
Like I said, I'm not sure of the facts on that one.
On the other side, I agree Yogs, over a certain age and people should be tested annually.

Shit yes everyone needs to be retested periodically. My grandmother with fucking alzhiemers has a drivers license, and she cant remember peoples names. She cannot even talk some days but she can still drive a car, even though my grandfather doesnt let her (THANK GOD). Everyone should retested, that would get a lot so SOBs of the street.

i just love how they bring again the stupid old argument of discrimination....well not shit we have to discriminate....when you are not fit to drive then yes you have to be discriminated against since otherwise you can hurt other poeple.....

I think in Canada, (Ontario at least) it's somewhere between 65-75 that you have to get reteseted....but still that's way too late.
I've heard instances where old ppl. think they're breaking but hit the gas instead.
Hell, it happened right here in the city. An old man almost killed his grand son/grand daughter who was in the car with him, because he hit the wrong pedal. Just lucky that he ended up in a church parking lot (after hours) and wasn't driving anywhere near a pedestrian filled area. :headshake

I agree with Yogs, that if you are 60 or older you should be retested. All too often where I work have elderly folks mistaken the accelerator for the brake, and they've gone through many a glass door( BIG bay door with a lot of windows to let people in and out of the shop). They should have their eyes tested and be given a driving test, and this should be done every year or two. But just my thoughts.

Yes I agree you should be retested but not at any particular age. In Ireland I believe if you are over a certain age I think its 60 you have to go through a medical to prove you are physically fit to drive. When you recieve a full license here the maximum length you can get a license for is ten years and my believe is that at the end of that 10 year period that you should have to go for a retest before you license is renewed. My fiance is going for her test soon and I told her that if I did the test now I would fail with flying colours and I only got my test 2 years ago. Thats not to say I am a bad or dangerous driver. Its just that I cant remeber some of the finer points of the rules that most people will ignore. For instance not parking within 10 meters of a bus stop or not parking beside a solid white line that runs down the middle of the road. Rules similiar to this I have forgotten.

There's a rule in NZ,but it clearly doesn't come into effect early enough.Father in law turns 80 this year, drives like a blind psycho and willeventually drift across the centre line in front of an unlucky bastard.Too many people in this country seem to think that a driver's licence is a god-given right for life, even though their abilities and reflexes are nowhere near adequate for the speed and volume of urban traffic. The testing of elderly drivers is a key point in the 'grey power' pressure group agenda, they like to argue that dear old Mrs Jones should be allowed to keep her licence because she finds it exhausting to walk to the supermarket, and it's dangerous for slow and short-sighted old dears to be walking the streets.

Yes, very careful.....is that why the police say they have evidence that he has damaged his own garage several times pulling the car in and out?
This whole case makes me ill, I feel for everyone involved, the old man included, but there is enough evidence to indicate he shouldn't have been driving anyway, so what do you do?
It's pointless sending him to trial and locking him away, considering the amount of time he is likely to live still, it would be a waste of tax dollars, but they should at least consider reviewing the law in the light of this incident.

I agree, you can't make an exception, but this also screams at them to fix the law.
I still wonder if it is worth putting a person his age on trial though, do you think he would survive the trauma of it all?
They need to have sort of competent drivers test in place now so this doesn't happen again.....

I was hearing dr. drew and adam corolla talk about this on loveline last night. dr. drew was saying that he gets elderly patients like this all the time, where they have temporary lapses of the mind. it sounds very much like the state this man was in. he hit the gas instead of the brake and just went into a horrified trance. dr. drew was saying that patients have done this driving through windows and garage doors and what not.
He also said it would be hard to test these people because some are in outstanding physical/mental shape. They just have lapses sometimes.
Have you ever gotten in the shower and after awhile, can't remember if you've shampooed or not? I have, and I'm 19.

Ha Ha, don't feel bad I'm 21 and have forgotten if I've shampooed or not. But I think thats just natural. I think when people reach a certain age they need to be retested. I mean, some(not all) old people are dangerous to every other driver b/c they react slow and drive slow. Especially when getting on the freeway or pulling out of somewhere. They take off at 2mph and it takes them 30 minutes to get up to speed and even that sometimes isn't even near the speed limit.

Death toll at 10, 69 additional people injured...
My opinion on all this is that they should road-test (no, not just vision-test, but actual on-the-road-test) EVERYONE regardless of age every 5 years, and old people (65+) every TWO.
As for the AARP who's so against testing, IF the old people are such competent drivers anyway, then what do they have to be afraid of by routine testing? They ought to welcome the chance to prove their roadworthiness, if they're so competent.
I was driving home from work the other night, going 35, and really stopped and paid attention to how long it takes to go 1.5 blocks at that speed. This man, went 3 blocks at up to 70mph, so that's equivalent to 1.5 blocks at 35....
It took about 15 seconds...that doesn't sound like long, but look at your watch for 15 full seconds and picture running into 79 people in that amount of time...it only takes a fraction of a second to hit the brakes.
I was reading some other reports about how so few old people get in accidents...well, yeah, that's because when they do something stupid, they do it slow enough that the rest of us can usually avoid them.
My Sentra was totaled by an 85-year old making an illegal left turn, and then stopping abruptly in traffic.
There needs to be state legislation controlling this, because many, many people have old bad-driving relatives (Mr. T?) but very very few actually tell said relatives to stop driving...it's a very very difficult subject, to take away someone's freedom.

They say it takes the average motorist two seconds to respond to a given situation.. I think it only takes one, but he was old, so it might take him three. That's 12 seconds left.
Since the man probably was going to SLAM the brakes, and instead SLAMMED the gas, it would take him another 3 to figure that out. Now we are down to 9 seconds, and the man still hasn't hit the brakes yet.
The man is probably freaking out right about now, and is in a shock sort of state because he has already hit a few people. You can't really respond in that sort of situation. He might have gone into that shocked trance when he first hit the gas. Who knows?
I don't think the man did it on purpose.

That would be the best - its always the cost of doing it that prevents something like this from happening. It would drive up the cost of getting your license (I donˇ¦t remember where I read this) to 10-15 times its current cost.
The first thing youˇ¦d hear out of a certain section of society is that this would price people out of their license.
I think it would be worth the cost.

If 99% of people pass a test, it's too easy.... Who do you know, even under 55, that has ever been denied a driver's licence renewal? Now, how many people do you know who shouldn't be driving? We are far to lax on driver qualifications....

Drivers should be re-tested. And why not?
I have to have the "Motorcycle Endorsement" on my license to ride a motorbike on public roads. And there are 3 or so different classes of the endorsement, dependent on the size of the bike.
But anyone can jump in an absolutely gigantic motorhome, and just take off down the road! These things should require a combination driver's license due to their size!
But they don't. The AARP won't let it happen. To HELL with safety.
I'd say re-test older drivers; younger drivers have a restricted license for safety reasons. But nobody is bitching about "discrimination" there!
And add a damned RV endorsement, too. Dependent on the size of the motor home - pickups with campers could be exempted. Turbo-diesel motorhomes the size of an 18-wheeler would be taxed accordingly.
Just my 0.02

That's part of the problem, retirees often have nothing better to do than vote, so they command a tremendous amount of power with politicians.
Anyone ever stop to consider how driver-testing is "discrimination" but when retirees get the cheap housing in 55+ communities, it's not?

yea, damn those people that can hardly walk, let alone maintain a steady job.
I'm glad they are in communities. I'd probably get calls twice a week for my exhaust if old people lived in my neighborhood.

I agree on testing every few years regardless of age. There are so many people out there who CAN'T drive regardless of age...just cruise the freeways of any major city. I don't how it goes in the other States, but in AZ....
- you get your license at 16 and it is good til you're 60...you have to update your pic every 12 years I think.
- at 60 you get tested again and then every 5 years afterward.
The last time I renewed my drivers license was a few days before I turned 20. I turned 29 last weekend. I don't have to take a test or renew til 2034  I have to laugh because when I get ID's for alcohol, my license still says "under 21 until 08/23/1995" But in a few weeks I have to get a new one with my new name and a new pic :o
