2001-2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer 4.2L I6 Starter Replacement
Tools:
8mm, 13mm, 15mm, sockets
19mm deep socket
Impact or Breaker Bar
3in, 6in extensions
Problem:
Vehicle turns and grinds, doesnt always start first try
Repair:
Remove your positive connection to the battery. Turn the steering wheel completely to the right. Raise the vehicle to the desired height. Take your 19mm and remove the drivers side front wheel. To the right of the strut assembly you will see a flap. Lift that flap and locate the starter. Remove the wires on the starter using your 13 and 8mm sockets. Run your hand to the bottom of the starter and remove the 15mm bolt, then run your hand from the selenoid toward the motor to locate the 15mm nut on the other side. The starter should pull out of the motor now. Using a camera or phone take a picture of your flywheel to confirm that the condition is still operable. Repeat steps backwards for re assembly.

Rotate crankshaft (and therefore the flywheel) at least one full turn to verify that the ring-gear teeth are in good condition ALL THE WAY AROUND.
It would be helpful to include torque specs for the fasteners.
