My 2005 Chevy Tahoe started having a faint gas smell about a week ago. At first we thought it was possibly a slight spill when fueling it. The smell has gotten worse and is coming from the back drivers side door area. Checked for any noticeable leaks and there are none. No codes as of yet. When I went to start it this morning it seemed to hesitate in starting but did start. Took it to a friend of mine and he feels it could be the evap system. Any ideas on where to look first? Money is tight and he recommended taking it to a shop to test.

I would put it on 4 jack stands. Use a flashlight and look for wet spots on the fuel line. Pull the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator and check for gas.

what you have is the fuel return line leak. could be the supply but in my case the return line leaks in the canister area why ??? I don't know but I did have this happen twice. this steel line twice leaked from the inside out no rust on the outside.
this is the line between the canister and where the fuel filter would be 5/16 inch.
with the engine on look for leaks in this area .. so if it leaks you will have to replace line so there are pipes to installl with the proper steel fabrication to connect to the nylon flex lines but you will have to bend the lines to install.. cost about $20........

Thanks for the replies. I have my friend who will be coming over to look at it next week. I was able to go under the car today as the smell has gotten worse and it is hard to start. I checked the lines and see nothing. Then I saw on the bottom of what I believe is the gas tank it was wet....I got a towel and wiped it...sure enough it is gas. I am assuming he will have to drop the tank and see what is happening?

could be the fuel pump will need replacing .it does happen that the steel lines at the top of the tank/fuel pump assy are rusted out on top of tank esp tahoe traps a lot of road chemicals there........

We did replace the fuel pump this week. Now the truck will not start and fuel is leaking from the charcoal canister. My friend is stumped. Any ideas please? I posted a separate post on this.

charcoal canister has no liquid fuel to it .... only vapors. line sizes are different so that is weird. why did you replace the fuel pump ?

My friend dropped the tank again. The fuel pump they sent us was for a flex fuel. Seems someone put the wrong pump.in the box. Problem.solved.
He had to replace the pump because the top.of.thr pump was completely rusted and leaking. :)

the area does hold the snow melt chemicals. do a good under body wash after the winter ends.
installing the wrong [flex] fuel pump what a PITA..
