2001 Windstar Sport

I just bought a 2001 windstar sport to replace my windstar LX as when driving my van home one day climbing a slight hill i heard a CLUNK from the right hand side then it sounded like the transmission was making a groaning weezing sound so i replaced the van and will possibly fix the lx in the future not too sure about that yet as it only has 143000km on it and runs perfectly fine no smoke/hesitation maybe i'll sell it out for parts.

the new van has a couple issues i noticed after i bought it (next Day) the ABS and park light come on and off intermittently, I have heard this could be the brake pressure cutoff switch and others say i need to replace the abs unit itself. but those light come on and off sometimes stay off sometimes stay on not sure why but cruise works fine and seems to brake like my lx is there a way to disconnect the harness under the master cylinder and see if it continues to do this as i need to wait till next month to get the new switch if that is the cause( i guess i could just swap the replacement switch out of my lx but i don't want a Frankenstein vehicle...... i will be getting it fixed and will possible drive it again (But just wondered if this switch would throw ABS and brake light on dash)

Brake pressure switch on the bottom of the master cylinder is a safety issue if it has not been addressed.
The van can catch fire.....so unplug it if there is any sign of brake fluid leakage around the switch.
Your FORD dealer should be able to address this issue free of charge to you.
There was a recall issued for this, which is why the solution should be free.

Brake fluid level in the master cylinder.....must be filled FULL to the full line on the unit......even very slightly low will light the brake light.

Have the rear axle inspected....also a safety issue covered by a recall from FORD. They should address any issue with this for free.
The issue with this is that they can rust through and break.

Can the pressure switch cause the abs and brake light to illuminate? if so i will just swap the one from the lx to this one as i just did the switch a couple months ago. but the switch in the sport is the round unit and the one in the lx is the fixed unit so if i swap them out no big problem......

also the van's with the bad axles i read were only on the east coast this van has been a west coast van all it's life and i am the 2nd owner and the first owner had maintenance done on the mileage and i have the receipts and door stickers to prove it...

but like i said it's just the abs light and parking light on the dash that are annoying me now as they stay off then after 15-20 mins they come on or sometimes they just stay on that is why i asked about the pressure switch

Unlikely it's the brake pressure switch (SCDS). It's most likely the ABS computer module. You can get that rebuilt for around $50. Go to ebay and search "windstar abs rebuild". I used "My Auto Solutions" with great results.

To confirm, you'll need to scan for codes with a scanner capable of reading ABS codes. Normally there will be a whole bunch of "C" codes indicating the computer module has a short on the circuit board. It seems to be a pretty common failure.

hi thanks for the update i will look into the abs module once the rain dies down as lack of garage sucks... did get a chance to look at the brake pressure switch and it was the round unit i contacted the original owner who said that the abs light and brake light have been coming on for awhile as in as long as they have owned it since about a year after they purchased it.... Ford couldn't find an issue with it so they just kept on top of brake jobs and such but they never noticed an issue..... so when i bought it the lights were off everything was great the next day lights came on intermittently and would go out every time i shut the van off and started it again. i got a chance to goto ford yesterday had a recall check done(Nothing Found) and i picked up the brake repair kit while i was there 60 dollars later.... man i wish i lived in the states only 27 in washington......i replaced it today fired up the van NO LIGHTS at all on the dash for abs or brake..... i know wishful thinking but if it's the same part as my lx maybe i'll just swap then out... as i think i am going to scrap the van anyways....i didn't notice any weeping at all on the switch part number F58A-9F924-AA but i changed it out and will keep you updated

If the old switch did start leaking, caused a fire and possibly worse, you'd feel pretty bad. $60 is a good deal for that much insurance. And, your cruise control will always work now too.

I hope the ABS/Brake lights stay off, but I have to say, I think it's just coincidence. The SCDS doesn't affect ABS at all. The lights will turn on and off intermittently with that issue it's a cold solder joint that may sometimes have continuity just by chance. If you do decide to keep the van, I highly recommend getting that ABS module rebuilt (after first verifying the typical barrage of C-codes, of course)

funny thing is the cruise control worked all the times that i tried it and supposedly everytime they (original owners) used it on their trip to california but yeah i am going to be keeping it for a few more months possibly a year anyhow until my lawyer settles with my insurance company then i will possibly look for a newer vehicle till now i have what seems like a decent one

The cruise control will work as long as the brake fluid doesn't leak. When that happens, it shorts out the switch and shuts it off. The switch basically detects pressure from the master cylinder in order to cut off cruise control when you press the brakes. (hence the name "break pressure deactivation switch"). If the ABS and Brake light come back on, it's most likely that ABS module. Not too expensive of a fix but a moderate hassle to remove and reinstall the thing mainly due to it's location.

yeah i need to climb under the van and find the abs module i heard it's under the drivers seat but i really don't want to take it apart as i need to drive it to physio so i will deal with if for a little while. or can i just take it apart and still drive the van? from the pictures on the internet it seems that as soon as you pop off the module itself it exposes something
