I received the MFH 1/12 Porsche 956, Short tail 'NewMan" version sometime ago but needed to get some other projects wrapped up before starting this one. Now this is on the work table. This will also be my first MFH kit. Not the first one I've purchased but the first one I'll attempt to build.

The kit is typical MFH resin and white metal, with lots of white metal parts, some turned aluminum parts, wires, screws, etc. There are some inaccuracies with this kit for this version of the car. Namely, the fuel system is incorrect and incomplete. The correct parts are 3D printed available through Shapeways. I have purchased those parts but still have some decisions to make which way I go. I actually like the looks of the incorrect fuel system better.

I started off by sorting the white metal parts by assembly sequence so I would have all the parts needed for each step without having to sort through various bags of parts to find the one part I need when I need it.

An example of how I sorted and stored the parts in containers. (Note: There's AF member, Veyron's, built Lamborghini in the background photo bombing my picture  )

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150510_104924_resize_zpsk98b9kba.jpg (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/justdande/media/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150510_104924_resize_zpsk98b9kba.jpg.html)

Once the parts were sorted and I started studying how to approach the build I decided to give in to my desire to build the wheels first. I just couldn't resist those wheels and tires...

The basic components of the wheels. Consists of the Machined rim, BBS Mesh insert, brake cooling fins (front wheels only) and the flat outer disc of the cooling fins.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150510_104907_resize_zpsf1pjabt8.jpg (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/justdande/media/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150510_104907_resize_zpsf1pjabt8.jpg.html)

A closer view. The rims are pre-drilled for the torque screws that hold the mesh in. The mesh has divets where they need to be drilled. The shaft of the torque screws are larger than the holes in the rim so those in the rim must be re-drilled at a larger diameter.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150510_105023_resize_zpst6js7yyr.jpg (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/justdande/media/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150510_105023_resize_zpst6js7yyr.jpg.html)

Also, the brake cooling fins are too thick. This bothered me from the moment I first opened the box.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150510_104959_resize_zpsvjskpmzo.jpg (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/justdande/media/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150510_104959_resize_zpsvjskpmzo.jpg.html)

Some (a lot) of filing and sanding and I'm happier with the result. A minor detail, I guess, but I think it makes a difference.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150510_123134_resize_zpsdlsjdaer.jpg (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/justdande/media/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150510_123134_resize_zpsdlsjdaer.jpg.html)

Several hours later and the basic wheels are drilled, painted and assembled. In this stage they are too bright and shiny. The still need to have the treads scuffed, decals added to the BBS wheels and also decals to the tires, a wheel balancing weight taped to the rim, a wash to tone things down a bit and dull coat over the decals before they're truly complete.

Thanks for doing one of these MFH kits Eric

I am interested in this kit but the skills needed and price have intimidated me.

after following your GT40 build and being thoroughly impressed by what you did with that kit - I am in for following you on this one.

Cheers

I want this kit so bad, but can't spend that kind of money right now.

I'll be following this.

Thanks everyone. I've made more progress but not much to show for it at this point. There has been a lot of test fitting and a lot of holes drilled in the white metal and parts modified in order to make them fit correctly. I hope to move on to some actual sub-assemblies and priming/painting in the near future.

When I start the sub-assemblies I'll also show any modifications/adjustments I had to make at that time.

Just a small update...

The kit's white metal parts that make up the chassis and monocoque has small divots that are supposed to represent rivets. I wanted to add rivets but after researching the small scale rivets that are available I decided to make my own. The reason I decided to make my own is 1) cost of after market rivets and by a rough count it's around 1300 rivets that would be needed, and 2) the ones I found that I could buy in (somewhat bulk) were stainless steel. I didn't want the expense and I didn't want to have to cut stainless steel rivets to length.

So, I "made" rivets using .4mm soldering wire.

First, I started by cutting the wire into small pieces at a length that made it easy to work with.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150703_161105%201280x960%201024x768_zpsr6ehpkab. jpg (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/justdande/media/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150703_161105%201280x960%201024x768_zpsr6ehpkab. jpg.html)

Next, I drilled all the molded divots a little deeper the allow the wire (rivet) to sit deeper into the part.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150703_153826%201280x960%201024x768_zpsohhk5r3l. jpg (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/justdande/media/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150703_153826%201280x960%201024x768_zpsohhk5r3l. jpg.html)

Using needle point tweezers I picked up each cut piece of solder and dipped one end in superglue.

I placed each rivet (piece of solder) in the hole and allowed to dry.

Once dry and set in place I used and sanding stick and sanded them all down to an even and consistent level.

May not be perfect but it represents a rivet more than not having them at all and the soft solder is really easy to cut and work with.

smart move with the solder. i thought you'd trim them a bit after mounting and then bang on them to shape it like a rivet. :)

Finally, engine assembly begins...

The parts were primed with grey primer then painted with various metalizers. Although difficult to tell in these photos the block was painted gun metal, the cylinders were painted with aluminum and the heads were painted with steel.

All parts were then overcaoted with flat clear to seal the metalizer. Once the flat clear had dried all the parts were washed with a medium/dark wash to bring out some details. After the wash dried a dry brush using AK Interactive Metal Wax (various shades of metal) to highlight some areas and bring it back to a 'metal' look.

It will get another light dull/semi-gloss clear coat because I think it's a little too "sparkly" at the moment. Last the nuts, bolts and other detail will be picked out and detail painted.

The fan shroud, which is resin in the kit, was cleaned up and primed grey. I mixed Tamiya TS-8 (Italian Red) and TS-33 (Hull Red). After looking at many pictures of the real car I determined that if the fan shroud was ever "just red" it was only when new or freshly restored. Most of the pictures showed a slightly brown'ish red and semi-gloss finish. This might be because of heat or age that caused it to fade to this color but this is close to my reference.

Top of engine. Still a lot more parts to add, details to paint, then all the plumbing and wiring and there'll need to be touch-up at the end. I hope to have the engine finished up this weekend.

More progress on the engine. Getting closer to completion. This kit uses the wrong fuel system for this car and even though I have the correct system 3D printed I honestly like the incorrect systems looks better. To me, it fills up the area better and makes the engine look more complete. (And I have seen this system in pics of what appears to be the restored car).

A few more parts added, fuel filters, water pumps, cooling fan and altenator, etc. Also, a little more weathering in the form of dry brushing and washes and picked out a few more nuts and bolts with Titanium Gold. Pre-drilled a lot of holes for the kit suggested plumbing as well as a lot of additional plumbing that needs to be done. Still a lot of work to do!

And the cool fuel rails and injectors used with this fuel system. Once installed and plumbed with some braided line I think these will look great.

Great progress.

I'm not a big fan of your rivets, but it's far better then having no rivets at all.

Scalehardware.com has some excellent rivets : http://www.scalehardware.com/miniature-rivets-c-10

Sincerely

Pascal

Thanks Pascal. I did look at those but decided against the Scale Hardware rivets for various reasons;

1. I would need to spend nearly $160.00 to get enough rivets for this car.

2. The only .5mm rivets they have are made of brass and the smallest stainless steel was .7mm head diameter which to me would have looked too big especially in the areas where the rivets are close together.

3. Being stainless I knew the excess length of the rivets would be harder to cut flush with the back side of the parts. Even though the back side is not visible on some parts, it is visible on other parts after assembly.

I debated the options in my mind for a month and in the end I compromised and used a method I felt would be less expensive (this way probably cost me less the $5.00), easier to work with (soft solder), smaller since the solder is .4mm diameter, and still silver in the event that I rub off some paint along the build process which I plan on happening.

Maybe not a perfect example of a rivet but I agree, it's better than no rivet at all, and good enough for me I suppose.

WOW Eric - you are really making excellent progress on this MFH build.

you are really making the engine look great with all the bolt heads picked out -
it will be a shame that when the engine/transaxle is all together and in the car that so much will be hidden.
it is unfortunate that MFH does not include double the parts for the engine/transaxle so that one set could be installed and the other all completed and on a stand for display next to the car.

Anyhow kudos Eric - this is going so well and you are doing some really nice work with white metal parts that I am always waiting for the next posting.

Cheers
John

Thanks for the reply Eric,

Spending 160 bucks on rivets for one car doesn't make sense to my either.

Looking forward to your next update.

More engine progress. Some plumbing added, etc. The intake plenum on top of the engine is one of the few parts that will stay natural metal, I think it polishes up very close to how the real car looks.

I don't really like the "anodized" fittings. Basically just molded white metal fittings painted silver then painted with Tamiya clear red and clear blue. To me the color is not consistent enough and they're too glossy. I can take care of the glossiness by brushing a light coat of flat clear over them, which I plan to do before I go any further.

Here's a few general pics. The plenum is just set in place, not glued. I still have more work to do with wiring and plumbing before it gets attached permanently. If the front of the engine were more visible in the finished build the molded in belts on the pulleys would need to be removed and replaced with tape or some other material.

Thanks guys.

The engine is now complete. Added more fuel lines, vacuum lines from the fuel pressure regulators (at least I think that's what they are), and from each intake. The vacuum lines converge at the black cap on top of the engine. As it get's installed to the chassis there will likely be more cable ties and minor details, touch ups, etc., added.

Thanks for looking...

Another quick update.

(I realized after my last post that the engine is not quite complete. I still need to add the wires to the individual green fuel injectors.)

I've made some progress on the chassis. Having previously added all the rivets and primed all the parts I moved ahead and sprayed all the parts with flat aluminum then using various brushes and cloth I polished all the parts with Rub-N-Buff Silver Leaf paste and polished to a shine. Overall I'm happy with the results but unhappy with the fact that the reflectivity really shows the pitting and ruff finish of the white metal parts. (The photos make it look worse). Thankfully a lot of this in not as visible on the completed model.

The chassis partly assembled.

Wow Eric - you really must have patience to do all that rivet work.
It does look good though better than from MFH cast in rivets.

It is a shame about the pitting of the aluminum sheets.
could that be filled and made flat before painting? just asking.

Front suspension is coming together nicely.
Are the gold colored suspension bits painted or is that the MFH color?

Doing excellent Eric - I'll keep watching with anticipation.

Thanks guys.

John, they varied in color on the real cars. In my research I've seen black, silver and gold or combinations of those colors. However, the majority seemed to be gold. Gold is also the color called out by MFH. I chose gold based on my research. I have used very few colors called out by MFH. Shades of those colors maybe but very few actual colors they call for.

Thanks guys...

I was able to get some work done on the front brakes over the weekend.

First thing I did was remove the molded in wheel locator studs and drill holes for new studs to be added. Those are the brake pads in the background.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150731_165238_zpshej2qsx5.jpg (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/justdande/media/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150731_165238_zpshej2qsx5.jpg.html)

Then added the new studs, sanded the rotors to give a worn look. There were a few gouges in the rotors I couldn't remove without significant grinding but for the most part the sanding marks indicate the direction of travel on the rotors. I also assembled the rotor and painted the edge a darker metallic color. The calipers were painted flat black then dry brushed with dark grey metalizer and the brake pads were painted and added.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150801_123232_zps6ijulta4.jpg (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/justdande/media/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150801_123232_zps6ijulta4.jpg.html)

The spindle was mounted to the suspension and the rotor and calipers were mounted to the spindle.

A small update. I've not worked on the model in a couple weeks but spent some time working on the 956 this weekend.

Front bulkhead, support bars, tow hook and brake/Windshield washer fluid reservoirs added. The reservoirs still need to be plumbed and wired.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150823_192913%201024x719_zpsulwmcmdp.jpg (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/justdande/media/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150823_192913%201024x719_zpsulwmcmdp.jpg.html)

Started working on the radiators. They are hollow and when the photoetched radiator faces are added you can see all the way through. I didn't like this so I added sheet plastic inside (two are done, the others still need to be done) and will paint the inside black before adding the faces.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150823_152626%201024x768_zps5fhymmm5.jpg (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/justdande/media/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150823_152626%201024x768_zps5fhymmm5.jpg.html)

Started working on the tank which goes together in two halves. Looking at the real car it appears to be two halves with a lid all welded together. After assembly I added 'weld' lines by gluing thin solder wire over the seams where the kit parts glue together. Once set I used the knurled surface of my pin-vise and rolled it over the solder allowing the pattern of the knurled surface to press into the soft solder. Once primed, painted with metalizer and polished out/weathered a little it should look decent. I did the same thing for the fuel filler tubes as well.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150823_113134%20723x800_zpsttfxs1gp.jpg (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/justdande/media/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150823_113134%20723x800_zpsttfxs1gp.jpg.html)

I also mated the engine to the monocoque. Added the fuel injector wiring harnesses, additional plumbing and over-coated all the anodized fittings with flat clear paint to tone them down a little. I still need to add the throttle linkage on one side and throttle position sensor on the other along with the associated wiring. You can also see the fuel filler tubes in place. I don't know if the weld seams on the filler tubes are accurate for this car or not. Random pics of real cars had them sometimes and had smooth tubes at other times. I liked the look and think the effect will be nice on the finished model.

A few minor updates from this weekend's modeling sessions.

I started off by adding the rear support rods and oil tank as well as the shifter linkage. The shifter linkage still needs some detail painting.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150830_103048%202%201024x768_zpspanvpo3k.jpg (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/justdande/media/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150830_103048%202%201024x768_zpspanvpo3k.jpg.htm l)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150830_103103%202%201024x768_zpsis0jxd4k.jpg (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/justdande/media/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150830_103103%202%201024x768_zpsis0jxd4k.jpg.htm l)

With the weight of the engine constantly pulling against the firewall I could feel the engine beginning to loosen the more I handled and worked with the model. I thought that it would tighten up when I added the support rods but there really is only small surface areas to glue the support rods.

Attaching the first half of the trans-axle was also a tight fit. I was constantly knocking things loose while trying to make it work and the more I handled it the more loose the engine mounting became. Personally, I feel there's too much engine weight for how the kit is designed but I know others have built the kit so it must just be me screwing up! :screwy:

Anyway... I was able to get things sorted out but I knew I would always be concerned about the weight and the constant stress created by the weight of the engine so I "pinned" all of the attachment points. I drilled a very small diameter hole at all the locations depicted by arrows. The holes were drilled in the direction of the arrow as well. After drilling the holes I inserted a very fine piece of metal guitar string in the hole, cut to length.

On the top section of the support there is a molded in hex-head bolt so I drilled through the middle of that and through the roll bar support and inserted the wire through the hole with CA glue. The bottom hole was drilled through the bracket and support rod and then the wire inserted and glued in place. At the back end where the rod mounts to the transaxle I drilled from the bottom through the transaxle and through the support rod and inserted the wire from the bottom with CA glue.

I repeated this process with the support rods on both sides of the car. The result is a very strong support system and a lot less stress on the engine (and a lot less stress on me personally)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150830_103103202201024x768_zpsis0jxd4k_Note_zpsc bap5skg.jpg (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/justdande/media/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150830_103103202201024x768_zpsis0jxd4k_Note_zpsc bap5skg.jpg.html)

I also began the process of hanging the radiators and support brackets on to the side of the monocoque. This all proved to be very finicky and I felt like I needed three hands to hold parts and glue parts all at the same time. The result looks fairly good though. Overall I'm happy with how they're turning out. There's one more radiator to add to each side and then some additional plumbing, washes and weathering should finish it off.

Some more progress to show.

Added the seatbelts and roll bars. The seats and the seatbelts, as well as much of the rest of the car, will get slightly dirtied up and weathered with various pastel chalks as I get closer to finishing the model.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/justdande/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150905_215824_zpsvgvw7lrd.jpg (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/justdande/media/MFH%2012th%20Scale%20Porsche%20956/20150905_215824_zpsvgvw7lrd.jpg.html)

Also added the side frames and radiators. This portion of the build is very tedious and somewhat difficult to get everything to line up. I'm still not 100% sure it's all lined up correctly. Also added a few other smaller details like the battery and battery support, and the hydraulic lifts. The battery and lifts still need to be wired and plumbed.

The exhaust and turbos were also added. The wastegate/blowoff valves still need to be plumbed as well. I got as far as drilling the holes for it.

During this phase of the build I discovered a major mistake I had made due to the instructions not being very clear. Hopefully I can help save others the same problem. There is an engine mounting plate the attaches to the front of the engine with three screws. There are four pins on the front of that plate that insert into four holes on the firewall/plate. The firewall then screws to the monocoque. In the firewall, the four holes to accept the four pins in the mounting plate need to be drilled all the way through or the mounting plate will sit back about 2mm to far. This pushes the entire engine and anything that attaches to it (exhaust, intercoolers, oil tank, etc. back 2mm too far also. This means the exhaust outlet will not line up with the opening in the side body panel, the oil tank filler neck will not line up with the opening in the rear hatch/engine cover and so on... you get the point. I had to completely remove the entire engine assembly from the monocoque, drill the holes in the firewall and build it all back again. It was not fun :shakehead .

These four pins.... drill the holes they fit into all the way through so the front face of mounting plate can be pulled flush with the firewall. All that was needed was for the instructions to say "drill these 4 holes all the way through" and there would have been no problem.

Although I did spend quite a bit of time working on the 956 this weekend I have very little to show for it but here are a few new progress pictures.

The transaxle has been attached and the rear suspension started. The trans cooler is just sitting on the gear box for a test fit. Still needs to be painted and attached later.

Eric - this is really coming out awesome.
Your WIP is really fantastic and you have been supplying so many really great close up pictures and explanations for what you have done and where the MFH instructions can have a builder go wrong.
I hope this is a WIP that will last in the Forum and not have the pictures disappear at some time in the near future like so many on the forum have.
I know this WIP will be very valuable for anyone else brave enough to make this kind of purchase and actually build it.
Kudos to you Eric

Thanks guys, here's another small update to the transaxle, rear suspension and wheels/tires.

Transaxle/suspension. Really no issues assembling this section. The brakes are just hanging for now until the lower A Arms are attached but those can only be attached after the rear undertray has been added, then the A Arms will insert through the undertray and attach to the transaxle assembly.
I need to add a few more parts like wheels studs, some nuts and bolts and a little more wiring and paint detail but it's getting closer.

Wheels and tires are almost done. I toned down the machined aluminum with semi-gloss clear, dirtied up the decals and sealed the tires with flat clear... need to add some markings like RF, RR, set #, etc, and would like the tread area to be sanded more. Even though the tread has been sanded it still looks too smooth to me.
