first wip and only my second automotive model,i am more a scifi guy who took a shine to beautiful, elegant, agressive detailed car models, they sure present a different challenge.

bought off ebay with scale motorsports cf decal template and studio27 decals for courage racing team.no stock decals.undecided whether to cf the rear suspension arms?

will try to detail up the kit as good as i can or it will be pretty bland in the engine area and opened the rear cowling wheel areas as they are open on the courage car.

Anyone have any suggestions for the blue paint, preferably zero paints?
http://i41.tinypic.com/xm352p.jpg

I bought some zero paint ford gt blue from hiroboy for a while back, intended to use for the nissan r89 calsonic ver but I realised when I got it that it was too dark but it seems a little lighter for the courage blue due to the silver in it.

this is what I used so far, its light in comparrison due to silver content.you can see the silver.

so any suggestions for zero paint color.i checked the color match site and its not listed

are you in the UK? I wonder if they will do a custom mix. If you're in the US, try contacting Scale Finishes.

Best match I can see is either a royal blue similar to tamiya x3 or theres the blue thats used in the bmw set for the darker blue stripe here
http://www.hiroboy.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=5199

I am thinking to ask for that blue thats used for the darker blue stripe?

theres still more detailing to do on the engine, waiting for yellow and red wires, shame the kit dosnt include the nissan v8 logo for the valve cover.

also third and final take on the wheels, this is how they will stay now.tried to make it match the original color,I didnt have it and I already used a darker shage of gold so custom mix was used.

What clear coat do you use and do You thin the zero paint down ?

bradfordian
01-08-2014, 10:02 AM
Zero paint is good to go straight from the bottle in airbrush, realy recommend it, get it from hiroboy.com, so no thinning needed.i actualy use alclad clear kote but this is only my second vehicle but I built a f1 2000 and used alclad clear on it with no probs.

yet to switch to the 2 part vlear coats that hiroboy sells.

Half of a good paint job is down to preperation, how you prepare parts, put the primer coat on, how you prepare that coat, how you apply the color and the clear, of course you need good spraying conditions.

but yes get zero paint, from hiroboy.com, its in uk as its best for automotive, treat your car like a car.

The paints wrong color, have stripped the body work and will have to reorder a more correct/closer color.this is ral5022 night blue and I think ral5013 cobalt blue is better.night blue looks too purple and vibrant cobalt blue is darker.so wont order paint now till next week so wont be update for a while.

waiting on wire that was ordered a week ago to finish off wiring the engine up, needs yellow and red wire.

I'm actually building the self same car myself at the moment.

I started with the Hasegawa kit and I'm trying to make it reflect the car as it ran in the race.

I've used the rear wing from the Hasegawa Jaguar XJR-8 Sprint with modified end plates to depict the two element unit the car ran with, the wheels from the Hase Porsche 962 to represent the wire type alloys. The rear wheel opening and front aero changes are pretty easy and I see you've got them pretty much spot on.

The colour is proving an issue to me as well, I'm plumping for a mix of shades from my Zero stock, as long as I don't need to touch it up I should be fine!

Here's the best reference picture I could find.

Looks more like ral 5013 cobalt blue is best option so far.

unfortunately without spending money for kits for parts I will have to just use the stock rear wing that came with the bog standard r89.

But yes the color I used was far to purpley (although still blue) and vibrant, am thinking cobalt blue when I ref the ral color chart.i will hopefully order the paint next week and get the body done.

obviously you will see the thread updated with my thoughts come that time and check the color out.you only live down the road from me as well.

Phil,

What can I say those photos are simply the best of the car I have seen.

The one I linked into I found uncredited on a Russian website a few weeks ago.

My version will have wheel and rear wing discrepancy, cant do anythibg about it realy.also looks like it has chimneys on the rear cowel, more likely for cooling the rear brakes or the smalker radiator located on the transmission.

I have yet to lay hands on a Tamiya one, I have several Hase ones in the stash so never got around to the big T's offering.

I wonder if it is actually a better basis for an R90.

The CABIN version of the Tamiya kit is labeled as an R90. Not really sure what the differences so can't comment on the accuracy. Basically the Tamiya kit is the LM low down force set-up and the Hasegawa is the sprint set-up (besides the Tamiya being full engine detail).

I like that one! I based my engine detail on the exoto die cast pics (they have all the versions iirc) but had to improvise 1 part of the wiring as there were no clear pics where the wiers went.the ones from the pump (or whatever it is) on the firewall.

its good to know theres someone near by, comes in handy for trades lol.

Phil,

Daft question I know but do you have any other shots of this or the other R89s that might show the LeMans configuration rear wing mounts. The Hasegawa kit has the taller JSPC version and the Tamiya one is just plain wrong.

decals are applied, dont think the light at this time of night will flatter it.the rear cowling is also done just not pictured.

I dont think the decals are correct fully.the simmonds sponsor logo wouldnt fit right unless it was put where the wiper is located and that would be wrong, it would bend on the wheel archs and interfere with the stripes if it was located in the right place and thats not the way its supposed to go.the numbers seem a bit big and the nissan logo at the botton rear is far too big.i get the impression either there was a scale issue or the decals are not for this kit.on the rear cowling for example near the rear end of it there should be an extra line that kinda boxs that end of the stripes but the decals are not like that at all, just straight.

Now that's interesting. Looking at your photos the issues with the front vent on the Tamiya body are suddenly very obvious. The centre vent curves down far too quickly after the windscreen. That is what knocks out the Simmonds decal.

I'll try put up some photos of the modified Hasegawa body just as soon as I can get it tidy enough for some primer.

Also when I have it I need to redo the white on the rims with silver.

I think at the end of the day its all good and all doing a car to a different racing team livery but if the car isnt right you lose decals etc and then that starts to make the car detract from what your hoping to achieve and I lost decal/s.also if the decal set isnt right that adds to the not quite right factor and they are not in this liverys case.

but I suppose for my second car I did ok, I just hope I can get better but I dont think I will be rushing to take a model thats not right for the job to put decals that are not right for the job to try to turn out a different livery car.
Lol

The Hooded Claw
01-26-2014, 03:01 PM
I agree, sometimes the changes needed for a different car are not just paint deep.

I have a thing for Japanese LeMans runners so will always try and go the extra mile to make them as accurate as possible. But that's my affliction!

At the end of the day if you put that on a display table at a show and said that's a model of the '89 Courage R89c 99.99% of people would not know there was anything wrong with it.

But then in the back of your mind it always niggles.

Been there done that got the T-Shirt.
