What car did I just see?

Alright you guys, I have no picture... but I was hoping from description you might be able to help me figure out what I just saw.
So I was at the gas station, and behind me pulls up the weirdest car I have ever seen.
So it was short and wide.... kinda like an older Lotus.. But here's where it gets weird. So the headlights were round. There were two sets of them. Then in the back, instead of the car being shorter like a sports car would be, it was long, and the window pattern reminded me of a station wagon. And I guess there were two gas tanks for the thing, because the guy lifted two panels, about 5 inches across and 8 inches long, up on both sides in the back. The panels had a design like arrows stacked on each other.
I over heard '72.
Maybe that'll help.
I've asked around to everyone I know. No one has a clue.
