Hey Guys!!

Heres my latest WIP, Ive been commissioned to build a replica of a Race car for a present.
So lets get started! Heres what the 1:1 race car looks like.
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/2682_93355483133_3653877_n.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/2682_93355473133_4897429_n.jpg

& heres all the graphics drawn up
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/BMWE30Ollie.jpg

This is the average Fujimi E30 BMW kit I'll be using
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/2F589CCE-F5FA-442E-B6BC-6E885AF43A74-4547-00000B4C5FA44750.jpg

Sadly this is a very average kit, it looks like its had its top choped a few inches.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/829DA645-1BF9-4FEA-A77F-E22E7D940A23-4547-00000B4C6303F7ED.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/FBFCE332-B462-403E-BCA1-7CE8E866183F-4547-00000B4C664C5C0D.jpg

I started by opening the bumper holes, & spent many hours getting the panels flush with each other. the Mold on my kit was quite average.
Below is a pic of the included front bumper spoiler that i wont be using but does look pretty cool!!
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/F848ECA6-FF5F-4170-90F3-79BBE1B93461-4547-00000B4C94A9DB53.jpg

Chassis
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/F54A512D-2922-4620-90F1-5F53A7F490F9-4547-00000B4C6D103F0D.jpg

The interior builds up on top of the chassis, this used to be one of those battery powered motorized kits Fujimi did in the 80s & they include everything for that too. But subsiquently the interior suffers, theres no wheel arches either.
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/348602BF-26FB-46F1-9516-1C1ACC4181BB-4547-00000B4C6980E493.jpg

This is the built up interior from what comes in the box, yes it even includes the rool bar, this is also the interior for the E30 Racecar kit Fujimi released.
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/12172C77-3535-43C1-9DAC-71971D00C5B0-4547-00000B4C89AF8565.jpg

Upon dry fitting the interior i noticed there is a huge gap on the rear parcel shelf, so this had to go!!!
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/590801C3-6962-43FD-A8A9-EDF03648D48B-4547-00000B4C97DFA5CC.jpg

This is the base of the stripped out interior, more detail to follow
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/647774EC-A67C-4106-B2F5-59415DEC9620-4547-00000B4C52F3B310.jpg

Much better!!! gap is now less than 1mm
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/B023A2A1-7AE0-4605-A267-EDB2FBE12AA8-6361-00000FC62F707887.jpg

I needed some wheel arches so an Enzo Ferrari kindly gifted me a pair...
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/0D39C5DE-751F-45A7-81AA-AECF021E370B-6361-00000FC62BA36BB9.jpg

The Sunroof also had to go!
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/66148C4E-EC13-4244-934D-F15A86D3B9B4-4547-00000B4C5C9205B5.jpg

Over here down in NZ we drive on the other side of the road so a RHD conversion is nessecary. Something i have never attempted yet
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/57088BAF-26C5-425D-819C-3393546A8D3F-4547-00000B4C79C40052.jpg

The Kit wheels are cool (even have streamliner panels!) but these 17" BBS rims match the 1:1s much better. I still have to modify them to fit & look more accurate.
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/31873192-5C11-443E-80A3-1564FE728FA8-4547-00000B4C7D7939DE.jpg

Thats about it for now, theres still heaps to do, but the bodys primered & ready for some paint, the decals are underway & the interior is almost done. More pics soon
Thanks for looking!

Hey Guys

Some more progress pics

This is the interior coming together, an example of how wide the Enzo wheel arches are & how much needed triming!

The interior just needs some putty & sanding now, then to start building the rollcage!

The Dash - these are all the cuts i have to make to convert to RHD

Hey Guys

Some more progress on the BMW racer!!

The Roll Cage - Out of the box
Did not fit well at all, it was far to low down & too far forward

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/345D4EC1-9BEF-47D7-9F67-D595052D5F8E-2737-00000591018C3A64.jpg

The Completed Roll Cage
This monstor has taken me quite awhile to piece together, my local hobby shop was out of styrene rod but had brass in the right size, its nice to work with, holds its bends but breaks jewellers saw blades quite efficently. It does also add some weight to the model which is nice. In total theres well over 1m (3ft) of brass tube, which would be approx 24m in the 1:1!!
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/1287A09C-2708-47B5-9A07-004FED3BF8E5-2580-000004D927D6FDEF.jpg

The Re-constructed Dash
Still abit to do but most of the major componets are back together & looking promising!
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/3F721E66-9AAF-4C7C-869E-9D80D2FDAAF2-2580-000004D90FE3E793.jpg

The Wheels
The centre caps needed removing so round to dads to use the drill press.
Pretty happy with the result just a little cleanup & some more detail then its good to go!

Paint - Finally ive managed to get some paint on (forgot to get a pic of the bright orange before it was masked up but that looks pretty damn cool)

Still abit to go with the body painting, Silver this weekend & body colour & black to go. Then semi gloss black & chrome.
After being stuffed around by a Decal printer in Europe for months I finally gave up & started searching again & managed to find someone who can print these locally (only a 10min drive from my house, which is a hell of alot closer than the otherside of the world!!) so should be picking these up next week, yay!

More progress soon, thanks for looking!

Disaster struck. I was cleaning the roll cage ready to be painted when a moments distraction & it slipped off the counter & onto the tile floor. Turns out its not an overly sturdy roll cage... Good thing the driver wasnt in it!!!

So I'm working on piecing it back together & tweaking it slightly

Thanks for looking, more re-progress soon!

Ouch, I usually do that with ones in 1/43 scale.

A couple of questions regarding the decal printers -

What did he hit you up for cost wise?

How is the fine detail in their print?

Why did I never think of using foil for masking before?

It works pretty well, cheap, paint doesnt bleed through but tears easily...

Hey, I had a price of 30 euro from a printer in spain using the same equipment & this was still cheaper! he charged me $40NZD(So thats about the cost of a coke in Oz with our terrible exchange rate...)
for a full A4 sheet, & it was full, vector file was 23Mb & i didnt leave much space between logos. The sheet is also pre primed with decal spray so you can cut & apply straight away. Its best to get white shapes printed & then apply the decal down over coloured surfaces etc.
As for the detail, its better than i expected, Its not Cartograph quality but it is pretty damn good! my iPhone doesnt take the best macro shots so hard to show detail.

Hey Guys

Its been a while since my last update but ive finally managed to make some inroads!
Firstly - after almost 3 months my Paint finally arrived! (I miss the good olde days when Hiroboy.com would airmail paints directly)
& to my surprise its a 2 part colour! Solid groundcoat & metallic pearl base coat!

Body is almost finished with its colour coats, just gloss black this weekend before getting a prelimary Clearcoat. The colour has come out looking really nice & im rather happy with it!

The underside of the chassis got a colour coat before it gets some weathering

Also the Wheels are ready for paint too. I added a centre spindle & nuts to better replicate the 1:1
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/da_ashman/BMW%20E30/16316A48-5967-4204-8BD5-B1F43C298F47-1505-000002E37D0EE8B7.jpg

The brakes that came with the Wheel set were too big & had clunky large drilled disks so found a set of brakes from a Ferrari 550 & slotted them to suit. much better! & much much better than the nonexistant BMW kit brakes!

No they still dont, but Spotmodel.com has them & does ship internationaly, but the risk is up to you! They also do custom orders like mine & dont seem to charge too much extra for it. But expect it to take awhile, I ordered at a bad time, they both went on Holiday at similar times & delayed it...

Hey GTRfan, I simply used superglue to hold the cage together, i did consider soldering it which would be stronger but being small i found the superglue was pretty quick & painless.

Update Time!

Had a week off work so managed to get some real progress done!!

Finished the black off completely this time... & clearcoated

Hey Ash
The build looks awesome
How did you find the decals? did you need to use any solvents etc?

Thanks!
The decals were pretty good to deal with, I did do a test on another build before i applied these ones just incase & to get familar with how they feel.
They dont take much more than a dip in water to seperate from backing paper, they are pretty strong considering too!! I tried to tear one & took more effort than i thought it would, the one issue i did incounter with the decals is they tend to fold down on themselves & become difficult to seperate, so I'm glad i did a test on another build first so i was prepared for that when it came to the Beamer. Was very glad I doubled up on the decals. & if your doing some its best to do 2 layers esp with white, makes it alot crisper too!
The decals do need to be handled with kid gloves though, I damaged the black on a few decals with my fingernails & also a steel rule. Oh thats the other thing, every decal needs to be trimed around closely as theres no carrier film overtop, that took Hours!!!

Hey Guys

Small update just been working on the interior & mounting wheels etc

Heres the Chassis with some detail painting done, as you can see at the rear theres only a tube molded to the chassis to hold the wheels on. As this kit didnt come with any brakes or suspension detail at all I had to fabricate up some simple mounts (which I forgot to get a photo of)...

LOL, yeah just noticed that, I keep writing it wrong everytime! The folder I kept the photos in was 325i, the decals are 318i & i think i named the photobucket folder 330i... damn BMW & there confusing Models

I found out the car is actually a 320i. Ive designed up a chrome badge to cut for the back, & hopefully the title will have changed if my edit works.
( & will go & change all the folders to the correct number)

Nope I lost mine along time ago!

Very crud & basic, but the kit chassis doesnt give you anything to work with & it is the underside of the model...

The Completed roll cage - the padding for this has taken me ages to solve, Ive tried fabric, felt, electrical tape etc. Then I found some vehicle double sided tape laying around the office & thought it would be perfect except that it was double sided adhesive, so I grabbed a piece of matt laminate film & stuck this to the Double sided tape & Viola! It looked perfect, even the texture! So this was wraped around the roll bars & tied with thread to simulate zip ties. very happy with how this part came out!!!

& Finally thanks to the internet & my investigative skills (aka Facebook & Forum Stalking...) I found the owner of this vehicle had used Red needles for the gauges. Below is the Kit decal with the white gauges & below that is my attempt at red needles. For me its sometime the small personalized touches that really make a model.

Ash, I have used the rubber shrink tubing available in computer shops. They use it to bundle the wiring. You can use a very sharp scalpel to slice the tube so it will go around the bars just like you do in a car.
