Porsche 917 - A bit of an experiment

It's been a very long time since I last painted. I guess that the responsibility of getting a real job after University was too much! Anyway, I decided that enough is enough and I needed to pick up the brushes again and get creative. Rather than play it safe I set about doing something more ambitious than my previous projects.
I've started this thread just to share my my progress over the last couple of days and to show you my, erm, less than technically perfect technique.
The subject was chosen because a couple of years ago I bought myself a classic Porsche 944. since then I seem to have developed a bit of a 'thing' for all things Porsche. A nice classic Porsche at LeMans seemed like a good subject for a dramatic image.
The design was layed out on the 24x18" canvas. I used the trusty grid method to ensure accuracy when transferring my reference image to the canvas.

A subtly graduated (darker on the right) and banded background was filled in as a base to work from later.

The majority of the car was painted. There's still some details like the sponsor logos and the wheels to sort out.

I got bored with the details so I tackled the background. My intention was to some how convey the speed, drama and sound (!?) of Lemans. It works in my head!

Since the last pic was taken I've managed to get carried away with the headlight reflections. Trying to fix that simply made it worse, so my next task will be to fix that... unfortunately there won't be any decent light for me to work with until next weekend, so i'll just have wait.
