Can my car pull a trailer?

Hello,

I was wondering how to calculate how much weight my car can pull (trailer + cargo)

I have a 1981 Cadillac Eldorado with the Olds 350 5.7L diesel engine.

I know diesels have a lot of low end torque, but that doesn't help me get raw numbers down. Eg, would it be possible to pull 500 lbs? 2000 lbs? I'll be driving on residential streets/arterials, so 25-30 mph tops.

I recall reading that 500-1000 lbs was safe for most vehicles.

That engine wasn't known for being a powerhouse or anything, but it should pull a smaller trailer just fine. Consider adding a transmission cooler, especially if this will be a regular thing.

1000 should be no problem as long as you don't mind going slower than normal :)

To find out how much your car can pull the weight, firstly check out the weight of the trailer which is always given on the Vehicle Identification number plate and then add that weight with weight of the load. You will get total weight your car will pull.
Now, check out how much your car can pull the weight, and the best method to check it out is read the vehicle manual.These manuals also provide detailed limitations of towing trailers.

They were rated for 1k when new. 120hp!!

When in doubt, read the manual. 1000 lbs is a reasonable limit for short hauls. Make sure the diff and trans fluids are good. Some older vehicles required thicker viscosity gear oil when towing...again, check the manual if you have it.
