I have a 2005 Subaru Forester 2.5l Non-turbo with automatic trans. I'm nearing time for my Forester's first timing belt change and I was wondering if I needed to change just the belt, or all the timing hardware, pulleys etc.? I know on my old Camry, you were recommended to change the hardware every other belt change, except for the tensioner spring.

Replace it all. The belt rarely fails, but the tensioners do. And will take out the belt, making your interference engine go kaboom.
Better safe than having to rebuild your engine for a small saving. This is the best answer I could get, from another board.

I would say to change out everything while you're in there. If you're gonna go so far as to swap out the belt, you may as well just replace everything so you know it's been done and when. Just IMO.

Haven't done it yet. I have about 3000 more miles to go.

My 05 forester bought new has almost 118,000 miles and I havent even considered timing belt replacement untill I saw your post.
If anyone has done replacement I'd appreciate any info.Ive been pricing replacement kits online and trying to decide if I should do it myself or have it done. Thanks again,George
