98 Suburban 4WD indicator light

My 98 burb has the push button 4WD system. There is an indicator cluster to the right of the steering wheel in which an amber colored light used to come on to indicate whether in 2WD, 4HI, or 4lo, or auto4wd. The light seems like it was always sporadic in coming on and staying on. Now it never comes on. The vehicle still goes into 4wd fine. I am assuming it is just a bad bulb. How do you access the bulb, from underneath the dash, or does the small rectangular box which encloses the cluster pop out? I took off the lower portion of the dash, but still could not get up in there to it. Maybe it is a job for my 11 yr old son with skinny arms
Thanks

There is a printer circuit board the switches and lights attached to, the solder joints tend to crack. You need to take apart the switch and resolder those connections. The switch comes out the front.

So, do I just pop out the panel from around the lights with something like a screwdriver

The instrument panel cover needs to come off to get the 4wd panel out. With the lower panel removed look for more screws holding the upper one on. Once those are removed the top side of the cover will need to be popped out. The steering column and tranny shifter needs to be all the way down.

Thanks 777, I was trying to pop out the small panel around the cluster of lights today. I was close to popping it out from the top but felt like I was forcing to much and quit. I will try to do this tommorrow. How hard is it to solder the connections? I have never used a solder gun. I did get my power mirrors fixed today thanks to jcat
