2003 alero "security light stays on"

For the past few months security light of my 2003 Alero keeps on activating preventing the engine to start or it doesn't even crank.
I always do the reset technique..."Turn ON the engine key for about 20 minutes and wait till the flashing security light become solid before starting the engine." Today when I started the car the security light comes ON and stays on for my whole 50 Kilometers travel. When I reached my destination,I tried to turn ON and OFF the engine waiting for my luck to have the solid security light to come OFF,but no luck.
Will this problem have any effect on the performance of the car?
Will the car stall while I'm on the road?
thanks

Sounds like you have a problem with the passlock sensor (located in the ignition lock housing). If your light comes on when you are driving, your car will NOT stall. If a problem is detected while cranking, it will not start. Then you will need to do the re-learn proceedure (what you are doing with the key on for 10 min, until the security light goes out). Finding out what code is stored would help in diagnosis.

Yeah, B2958 or B2960 IS USUALLY SET......
But who wants to continually reset this? Needs new PassLock sensor......

do I have to bring the car to the dealer to change this Passlock sensor?
Or can I just do it myself?
My worry is I am scared that the car will install why I'm on the road.
But according to gmtech1 "If your light comes on when you are driving, your car will NOT stall. If a problem is detected while cranking, it will not start."
I don't mind the steady security light,I can put black electrical tape.

Actually, the fact that the light is on constantly, is a "good" thing....
If the light comes on, AFTER the car has started, the system goes into a kind of "backup mode"....A code is set, but the car will start every time......but here is the rub...if the code is cleared or the battery is disconnected for any reason, that backup mode is gone....now if you go to start the vehicle and the problem resurfaces during cranking, it won't start....
Can you install one? Sure, but, get a manual for step by step procedures....

I fixed mine using directions I found at bergerweb.net.
I did follow the instruction but not lucky to make this steady security light goes off. I will try the trouble shooting by following the instruction on the link below , if there's a continuity on those 3 wires.

I had this same problem for a year - every week or so I would have to sit in the car for 10 mins with the key in the ON position, then it would start. I ended up getting a new key cut at a dealership with the VIN - do not copy a used/worn out key. I have not had a problem since!

Generally, a new key does not fix a PassLock problem.....it's usually the sensor....
Plus, check the date on the last post....

I recently had the security light staying on in my 2000 Alero. I replaced my ignition switch and the ignition cylinder and then I tried the passlock reset procedure....it refused to reset so that caused the security light to stay solid and not let me start my car....it's called theft mode for anyone who does not know. I was given some very good advice by my shop Foreman. I work for Ford and why do I have a GM pos? Anyways, he said to jump the starter using a jump button. Just hook one clip to the battery terminal on your starter and then the other clip on the ignition terminal which is also on your starter. Turn the car on and push the button. The security light went off and my car started!!!!

You did not have a SECURITY problem, if the car started.....
With PassLock, the SECURITY LIGHT stays on, until the car starts......
If you have a security problem, two things happen: the starter enable relay is not grounded, AND, a fuel enable signal is not sent to the PCM......
Jumping the starter will allow the car to crank, but without a fuel enable signal, the injectors will not fire.....
You had a problem with the starter circuit, not the SECURITY system....

I had the same problem for about a year. Security light would flash. When this happened, I was able to do the wait 10 minute rule and it would reset. Then, for about a week, the light would be solid. 10 minute rule would not work. Sometime I could just keep trying to start and would finally crank. Last week, my car shut-down while driving and could not get it started. I then, decided to change the ingnition switch and cylinder. Bought at scrap parts yard for $35. Thought it would be a big job but, was not. Youtube helped a little. Changed out and programmed new passlock by using the 10 minute rule and whola! Starts with no problems. Hope this helps someone.
