1993 Corolla, fuel pump bad??

When I stop at a red light or stop sign my corolla starts puttering like its going to shut off, then it does. When I step on the gas it shuts off and I have to restart it and keep my foot on the gas reving the engine so that it won't shut off on me. When I turn it on it will stay on until I put the car in reverse or drive then the puttering will start again and then it will shut off. Sometimes when it shuts off white smoke comes out from under the hood. Does anyone out there know what this might be a symptom of? I was thinking fuel pump but I really don't know. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

It might be your ignition coil. Check your spark at the plugs. Should be really hot and blue, not weak or yellow. Also, check your ignition timing. It doesn't sound like your fuel pump is bad, but don't rule it out. If the ignition checks out, check the fuel pressure and volume at the fuel rail.

1) Need to check the fuel pressure.
2) If no fuel pressure, check the fuel pump fuse & relay.
3) If low fuel pressure, replace the fuel filter, and recheck fuel pressure.
