AMG "Alubeam" silver

I think it would be cool to do my Revell SLS in the "Alubeam silver", which is claimed "to make the finish look like molten metal"

You can see it here:
http://www.clivesutton.co.uk/carsavailable/mercedes-benz/mercedes-sls-amg-alubeam-silver.php

Now, it doesn't look to me like an "Alclad" style finish, more like a very smooth, fine flake metallic. To be honest, I'm thinking that either Tamiya TS17 Gloss Aluminium or TS30 Silver Leaf are closer to the mark than anything else. Zero certainly doesn't do an Alubeam yet (though it could maybe be mixed up for me)

Anyone got any thoughts?

Well, Alubeam is actually a titanium color. It's a silver gray/gold IMO. You won't get the same effect from TS17 or TS30. Hiroboy's Zero Paints offers a chrome effect finish, and I was hoping that Steve could use this as a base for creating an Alubeam finish, but I haven't seen any SLS colors on his website yet and he didn't respond to my email.

P.S. I don't think those pics show off the color very well. They make it look like any other fine metallic, when its not.

Some better pictures here... it really doesn’t look like a chrome effect to me.

I dunno, the color to me doesn't look like anything particularly special. I might try Testors/MM metalizer.

But Schumacher's suit on the other hand- now that looks like molten metal!

And what a sporty little scarf he's wearing. Doesn't he look just stunning....:naughty:

Suck in that gut, Nico- someone's taking your photo.

The colour code is DB 047 - but it's not listed on the Lechler site, which means that Steve at Hiroboy won't be able to mix it.

Most of the other SLS colours ARE available though - he's just mixed me some AMG Monza Grey Magno.

I think there's a certain amount of luster to it, and so I thought the chrome effect might be a good start to mixing the right color. Like mixing chrome effect with standard colors to get the right effect.

I think this is as close as I'm going to get. Tamiya TS-30 Silver Leaf, polished and then polished with craft store "bronze powder" in silver. It's going to need careful handling (and probably doing again at the last minute...)

This is a nice kit. And that's a nice color. I just received mine. I bought 2 kits, the other went to my co-worker and there was a little surprise in the box. Both kits included wrong tires. They were from a Revell F1 kit, small slick tires with the wheel center way off. Has anyone had the same problem? I dunno what they have been thinking at the Revell packing line, surely not the job at hand atm! :D

Didn't fancy starting a new thread but in HK I spotted a Tamiya TS-83 Metallic Silver (and also TS-84 Metallic Gold) that I hadn't seen before.
It retailed at about HK$95 when regular TS sprays were about HK$30-40.

Instructions says to spray over a gloss black base and to not clear coat it.
Sound familiar?

Has anyone bought/tried it yet?

Wish me luck, because Jameston from Scale Finishes (www.scalefinishes.com) has been able to source Glasurit Mercedes Alubeam from his paint supplier. The supplier is mixing the paint tomorrow and I'll have it soon. I'll do some test shots as soon as I get it, and hopefully it achieves the desired affect!

One thing I've read about Alubeam is that it has to be sprayed by hand at the Mercedes factory, and it's tricky because the painter has to get the aluminum particles in the paint to lay flat to achieve that liquid metal finish. Any thoughts or tips fellow modelers on how best to achieve that, or do you think that the paint will naturally do that due to its composition?

What do you mean by that?

The color does look really smooth almost looks like the whole car has liquid on it. Maybe finer paint particles layed down would make it look better? I would get the paint matched for a close result. Scale finishes, hiroboy, or a car paint shop.
