My mom has a 1997 Aerostar and recently it smells like gas but only SOMETIMES from inside the vehicle, usually just after starting. She took it in to the shop and they could not find anything wrong (However, I HATE this shop, used to take my CRX there, and it took them 5 times to fix my clutch problem, so I don't think they know what they're talking about) But anyway, is this most likely something to do with a leak or break somewhere in the fuel line? Thanks.

i also have a strong gas smell in my 94. My family was gonna donate it so i snagged it up as an extra party wagon. I was thinking the carb was flooding out. It only happens periodically but sometimes its hard to start when there is a mega strong gas smell after turning over the engine.

Check the bottom of your gas tank for evidence of it leaking. They are made of plastic and will crack near the top if the straps that hold it in place are too tight.

Aerostar, especially a 94, is fuel-injected, not carburated.

Most common source of fuel smell on these is the fuel pump. The fuel line portion of the fuel pump which sticks out of the top of tank is a great collector of dirt etc. so it stays damp which causes it to corrode.
Sadly when this happens the only cure is remove the tank and replace the fuel pump/sender assembly.

Thanks. Remember, there is an access panel to the engine, right by our feet when we are driving. (Which may or may not be sealed as well as it should be). If there is a strong smell of fuel, this is an indication that the fuel injection system needs to be inspected.

I have 1997 Ford Aerostar with 3.0 and i have a strong gas smell coming in through the ac vents but only when the outside air temp is around 90. If i turn the switch to vent it goes away. If i turn the ac back on it comes back. Never have a problem when the air temp is below 85 degrees or so. What could this be?
